    oai:tudr.thapar.edu:10266/7109Direct experimental methods to investigate changes in micro-structure and mechanical properties in Heat - Affected Zone (HAZ) of weld plate is almost impossible , due to small size of HAZ . The only alternative available is to undergo simulation studies , which can be carried out theoretically as well as experimentally . Experimental simulation can be done with the help of a open and closed loop systems. Closed loop simulation is expensive as compared to open loop simulation . With this in mind , an attempt has been made to carry out simulation studies with the help of an open loop type thermal simulator using gas flame as an inexpensive heating source . In it emphasis is given on peak temperature and at-part of the thermal cycle . These factors are mainly responsible for the phase change of steel. Theoretical simulation is done by considering assumed linear continuous cooling time ( CCT ) curve and a computer programme has been developed for this analysis. Comparison of results for hardness is made for both the techniques . Hardness trend obtained from the computer aided simulation , appears to be closely related to the experimental results , with the variations of cooling rates in the critical zone

    Computer Aided Electric Power Availability Based Dynamic Production Planning of a Small Scale Industry

    As experienced in the past four-five years, the electric power generation in the country is not meeting the requirements of the industrial sector resulting in the loss of production and profit . In such a situation it becomes obligatory on the part of the management to plan the production based on available electric power. In this work , the dynamic production planning from month to month over a planning horizon of one year has been carried out . The planning problem was formulated in the linear programming format taking into account the various strategies to meet the demand . A computer program for dynamic production planning was developed and run on the computer . Four different types of demand patterns were investigated. Production planning according to the electric power availability is likely to reduce the overall cost of the product . The unit cost in a given period of planning horizon is dependent on the power availability and the demand pattern

    In this work , system reliability of unit I of the existing 4x110 M.W. Units of G.N.D. Thermal Plant , Bhatinda has been evaluated . The working of the unit for the period from 1.1.77 , Hrs to 17.10.78 , 16.40 Hrs was considered for the said purpose . The data so obtained was used in the evaluation of system reliability. The work is based on the criterion that the unit is performing adequately well or satisfactory so long as it is delivering power , may be at the rated or derated levels. Various types of failures resulting in system breakdown have been studied and accordingly various components / sub-system - system relationship on functional basis is studied and a "Reliability Block Diagram" of the system is developed . The reliability of various components / Sub-systems have been worked out and commented upon . Based on the values of individual component / Sub-system reliability , system reliability of the unit has been worked out. From the computed values of individual component reliability , the main boiler is established to be the werkest link in ht e thermal power plant system
