Viscoelastic–viscoplastic model with ductile damage accounting for tension–compression asymmetry and hydrostatic pressure effect for polyamide 66

    No full text
International audienceThis paper proposes a model for predicting the complex inelastic mechanical response of polyamide 66. Polyamide 66 is a semi-crystalline pressure-sensitive polymer that exhibits asymmetric yielding behavior, in which the yield strength is slightly higher in compression. With this in mind, an I 1 -J 2 yield function considering the asymmetric behavior and the hydrostatic pressure effect is presented and integrated into a phenomenological viscoelastic–viscoplastic model accounting for ductile damage. The corresponding thermodynamic framework and constitutive laws are discussed. Then, an experimental approach is presented to identify the model parameters through mechanical tests with different loading paths to capture the active mechanisms. The experimental findings obtained from uni-axial and multi-axial (tension-torsion) mechanical tests and the numerical model are used in an optimization algorithm to identify the model parameters. A parametric analysis is performed to study the effect of the asymmetric behavior on the state variables under different loading conditions using the identified parameters. The present model responses are in good agreement with the experimental data, and the combination of the experimental and numerical results demonstrates and statesthe asymmetric behavior of polyamide at relative humidity (RH) of 50%, which is captured by the suggested model. It is also worth pointing out that the parametric study conducted on a notched plate using finite element simulations showcases the structural computation capabilities of the proposed model

International audienceAugmented Reality (AR), a technology that overlays digital content onto the physical environment, holdspromise for enhancing creativity and usability in product design education. However, despite the advantages ofAdditive Manufacturing (AM) in enabling complex and customizable designs, designers often struggle to grasp itsabstract principles. Grounded in theories of immersive learning and multimodal visualization, this study in-vestigates whether integrating AR visualization can facilitate better understanding and stimulate creativity in AMeducation. A controlled experiment was conducted with 34 master’s students in product design, randomlyassigned to either an AR-based learning group or a traditional card-based learning group. Participants engagedwith AM principles through either an interactive AR application featuring manipulable 3D cube models or staticinformation cards. Usability perceptions and creativity of design outputs were assessed respectively throughstructured questionnaires and expert evaluations by five domain specialists. Mann–Whitney U tests, appropriatefor non-normally distributed data, revealed that the AR group reported significantly higher usability ratings andproduced more original design outcomes compared to the card-based group. These findings demonstrate that AR-based educational tools can directly improve the usability and creative engagement of students in learning AMprinciples. This study contributes to advancing the understanding of how immersive technologies can beeffectively integrated into design education to foster both practical skills and innovative thinking

Grain refinement by laser-generated ultrasound for the Powder Bed Fusion-Laser Beam Process.

International audienceAdditive manufacturing (AM) offers unprecedented design flexibility, but faces challenges in achieving customized material properties and localized microstructure control. This study investigates the use of acoustic excitation for grain refinement in the Powder Bed Fusion with Laser Beam (PBF-LB) process, inspired by casting and directed energy deposition (DED) techniques. We propose a novel approach that exploits laser-induced elastic waves, in which temporal laser power modulation acts as a monochromatic sound wave source for the melt pool. Experiments on 316L stainless steel reveal significant grain refinement across a broad spectrum of modulation frequencies. Thermal and mechanical hypotheses that could explain grain refinement are investigated through combined instrumentation and numerical simulation. Melt pool hydrodynamics were analyzed using in situ laser interferometry to probe normal displacement. A bead-on-plate multiphysics finite element modeling is under development to provide higher-resolution insights into the acoustic fields influence on melt pool hydrodynamics and solidification conditions. These results demonstrate the potential of ultrasound for microstructural refinement and provide new perspectives on acoustic-field-driven solidification in AM

This thesis focuses on the wake structure and the performance of dual-rotor coupled operation in high-solidity micro-wind turbines. It aims to investigate an efficient mechanism for harvesting residual rotational energy contained in the wake. Under low tip-speed ratio conditions (lambdaapprox1lambda approx 1), a significant portion of the rotational kinetic energy remains unconverted in the wake. To address this, a systematic experimental study was designed and carried out, including single-rotor performance tests, flow field measurements, and a comparative analysis of the performance and wake structure of dual-rotor systems under different rotational directions (co-rotating / counter-rotating) and axial spacings. The experiments were conducted in an PANDTLS type wind tunnel at the LIFSE laboratory, using a stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) system to measure axial and tangential velocity fields, as well as turbulence intensity. The rotors were designed using a blade cascade (grille d’aube) method, with the application of a vortex distribution law to control tangential velocity profiles. Tests were first conducted on a single rotor operating at a design tip-speed ratio of lambdaconception=1.0lambda_{conception} = 1.0, with wake characteristics evaluated up to 15 rotor radii. A comparative study was then performed for other design tip-speed ratios. In parallel, upwind and downwind installation configurations were investigated. For the dual-rotor system, co-rotating and counter-rotating configurations were tested at three typical axial spacings (d=3d^* = 3, 6, 12). In addition, the influence of adjusting the blade installation angle of the downstream rotor was studied in the near-wake region (dleq1d^* leq 1).The results show that counter-rotating configurations improve overall system performance. In the far wake region (dgeq6d^* geq 6), the power coefficient increased by up to 17% compared to the single rotor case. In the near wake, this gain reached up to 24% when the downstream rotor’s installation angle was optimized to match the velocity triangle of the upstream rotor. Based on these results, a rear rotor design strategy is proposed, incorporating feedback from the tangential velocity structure in the wake. This study provides a new theoretical basis and experimental validation for harvesting residual energy in the wake of high-solidity wind turbines operating at low Reynolds numbers. It is of significant interest for optimizing micro-wind systems in decentralized urban energy applications.

Early chatter detection through real-time supervision and time-domain simulation-based indicators

International audienceChatter undermines surface quality, tool life, and productivity, and most available indicators react only after vibration is fully developed. We introduce a real-time monitoring framework for turning that runs short time-domain simulations, extracts a single energy-trend indicator from the tool’s phase-space spiral area, and triggers threshold-based decisions. The indicator crosses its zero threshold several spindle revolutions before visible amplitude growth, enabling proactive speed or depth adjustments and extending machine life. Validation with reconstructed a literature case confirms the indicator’s robustness and its ability to track the stability-lobe boundary from one kinematic signal

Questioning the Experimental Protocol in Two Nobel Prizes

    No full text
International audienceFor discussions in the scientific community, we question the Post-Selection protocols (also known as p-hacking) in works that received the Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024, as well as the current flood of Post-Selection in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning within many other disciplines of science and engineering. We hypothesize that the Post-Selection protocol has three mistakes: (a) missing a test, (b) hiding bad-looking data, and (c) exaggerating prediction accuracy. Nobel Prizes must not escape the well-known scientific laws: (1) Different initial guesses in nonlinear problems lead to different local minima. (2) Papers about nonlinear problems must explain how the authors avoided local minima. Evidence: None of the questioned papers discuss (1) and (2). Therefore, they are not scientifically ethical. However, the future of AI and machine learning seems to be bright

Conventional nuclear models, from liquid-drop parametrizations to shell and density-functional theories, describe many global trends in binding and decay but remain probabilistic and heavily parameterized. They do not explain, from first principles, persistent anomalies such as deep sub-barrier fusion hindrance, odd-even staggering in fission yields, or the long half-life of 14C. This work extends Trembling Spacetime Relativity Theory (TSRT) into the nuclear domain as a deterministic geometric framework for structure, stability, and transformation. In TSRT, each nucleus is a localized trembling-curvature eigenmode whose stability results from sustained suppression of intrinsic spacetime curvature. Decay is a causal relaxation of this suppression and is modeled as curvature reconfiguration rather than a stochastic transition. Binding, fission, fusion, and decay thus emerge from the same geometric dynamics. Using a single global normalization fixed once on 60Co, the TSRT formulation reproduces experimental half-lives across beta decay, alpha decay, and spontaneous fission over more than twenty orders of magnitude, with a mean logarithmic deviation below one part in a million. No shell closures, pairing corrections, empirical preformation factors, or per-nucleus tuning are invoked. The 14C anomaly follows from its geometric beta-path curvature without adjustable hindrance. All Q-values, barrier actions, and emission rates follow deterministically from the spacetime metric and its curvature energy, and TSRT provides a causal mechanism for mass–energy conversion as curvature redistribution. TSRT also reproduces the emergence of neutron magic numbers as geometric minima of the curvature–stiffness map, matching the conventional magic sequence without quantum postulates. Deep sub-barrier fusion hindrance arises from geometric suppression of trembling-mode overlap; odd-even staggering in fission yields originates from phase-locked neck eigenmodes at scission; and electron-screening shifts reflect renormalization of near-field electromagnetic curvature. These effects are consistent with the trembling-spacetime geometry that also underlies atomic structure, photon emission, and gravitational redshift. Quantitatively, TSRT reproduces absolute nuclear half-lives from milliseconds up to about ten quintillion years, with mean logarithmic deviation below one millionth, using only three global constants fixed once per mode. This accuracy surpasses conventional microscopic and empirical models—which typically yield mean logarithmic deviations between one tenth and one hundredth—by roughly ten thousand times, showing that nuclear decay is a deterministic geometric phenomenon rather than a stochastic process. All physical quantities are expressed in absolute SI and nuclear units, with TSRT calibration constants tied to fundamental curvature and lifetime anchors without empirical scaling. TSRT also reproduces absolute fission energetics, yielding a total energy release of 170.0 MeV for thermal-neutron-induced U-235 (n,f) without any per-observable tuning. By deriving nuclear binding, decay, reaction timescales, and mass–energy conversion from a single geometric principle, TSRT establishes a unified, predictive, and reproducible description of nuclear stability and transformation. It bridges microscopic nuclear structure with macroscopic relativistic consistency, showing that mass–energy balance and decay kinetics are natural manifestations of curvature redistribution in trembling spacetime.

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-based hydrogels (PNIPAm) are part of the so-called smart excipients due to their potential in controlled drug release applications. This new generation of synthetic, thermosensitive and biocompatible, but not biodegradable polymers, present a knowledge gap regarding their stability under storage conditions (both thermal and oxidative). As a first step, this research aims to investigate the impact of accelerated aging on macroscopic properties, such as the phase transition temperature (Tcp), as well as on the release of active pharmaceutical ingredients. The chemical complexity of the hydrogels is incrementally increased throughout the studies, beginning with a linear homopolymer of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), followed by a network of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) containing N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide, and finally a random linear copolymer of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-co-acrylic acid.To understand the mechanisms behind the effects of aging, particular attention is given to macromolecular changes, such as variations in molar masses and the balance between hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. Accelerated aging studies reveal an increase in the phase transition temperature, primarily due to a decrease in molar mass resulting from chain scission. Linear poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) demonstrates immediate release for antibiotic-type active pharmaceutical ingredients (metronidazole and orbifloxacin), which can be modulated towards controlled release through structural and chemical modifications. For more complex polymers, such as cross-linked networks and copolymers, controlled release with an initial burst release phase is achieved over a 24-hour period. As a direct consequence of aging, structural modifications lead to variations in the release behavior of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Over time, the release slows down, and the overall efficacy of the system diminishes drastically. The introduction of hydrophilic species enhances intra- and inter-chain interactions between polymers and with active ingredients, thereby slowing their release. This work extends our understanding of the stability of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-based polymers, allowing for concrete approach of their use as pharmaceutical excipients.
