On the Normalization of Confusion Matrices: Methods and Geometric Interpretations

No full text
The confusion matrix is a standard tool for evaluating classifiers, providing a detailed view of model errors. In heterogeneous settings, its entries are influenced by two main factors: class similarity, reflecting how easily the model confuses certain classes, and distribution bias, stemming from imbalanced training or test distributions. Because confusion matrix values jointly reflect both factors, it is difficult to disentangle their individual effects. To address this issue, we introduce bistochastic normalization via Iterative Proportional Fitting, a generalization of row and column normalization. Unlike standard approaches, this method recovers the underlying structure of class similarity. By disentangling error sources, it enables a more precise diagnosis of model behavior and facilitates classifier improvement. We further establish connections between normalization, importance sampling, and class representations in the model's latent space, thereby offering a clearer interpretation of normalization schemes. Our implementation is publicly available 1 .</div

A cross-diffusion system with independent drifts and fast diffusion

No full text
We study a one-dimensional cross-diffusion system for two interacting populations on the torus, with a fast-diffusion law with exponent 0 < α ≤ 1 and different external potentials. For arbitrary non-negative L 1 initial data with bounded entropy and a mixing condition we prove the existence of global weak solutions. This extends the recent result of Mészáros, Parker from the linear diffusion (α = 1) to the fast-diffusion.</div

Inverted shear-strain magnetoelastic coupling at the Fe/BaTiO3 interface from polarised x-ray imaging

No full text
International audienceThe elastic degree of freedom is widely exploited to mediate magnetoelectric coupling between ferromagnetic films and ferroelectric substrates. For epitaxial Fe films grown on clean BaTiO3 substrates, shear strain can determine the underlying magnetoelastic coupling. Here, we use PhotoEmission Electron Microscopy of ferroic Fe and BaTiO3 domains, combined with micromagnetic simulations, to directly reveal an inverted interfacial magnetoelastic coupling in the low-dimensional limit. We show that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy competes with the epitaxial shear strain to align the local magnetization of ultrathin Fe films close to the local polarization direction of the ferroelectric BaTiO3 in-plane domains. Poling the BaTiO3 substrate creates c-domains with no shear strain contribution with the local magnetization rotated by ~45°. Tuning shear strain magnetoelastic contributions suggests new routes for designing magnetoelectric devices

No full text
International audienceIntroductionCancer is a major public health challenge due to its increasing incidence. While internal factors such as age and genetic predisposition influence its development, modifiable external factors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, and overweight, also increase the risk. Thanks to therapeutic advances, nearly 60% of patients achieve remission or recovery. However, the risk of recurrence and persistent physical and psychological aftereffects continue to impact their quality of life.ObjectiveThis study examines health behavior changes adopted after cancer and their influence on patients’ quality of life.MethodA sample of 1082 volunteers registered on the Seintinelles platform completed a questionnaire that included the post-cancer quality of life scale IOCv2 and items related to behavioral changes. A hierarchical multivariate regression analysis was conducted to examine relationships between these variables.ResultsAmong respondents, 71.5% reported modifying their habits, particularly regarding diet, physical activity, and stress management. Increased physical activity and improved stress management were associated with a better quality of life.ConclusionThese results raise questions about patients’ priorities, torn between the desire to extend life and the need to preserve its quality. Some behaviors may be perceived as sources of pleasure or comfort. They highlight the need to integrate supportive care into post-cancer follow-up, including adapted physical activity and guidance on stress management.

No full text
The ability to quickly characterize air pollutant sources is crucial, particularly in an industrial context, for ensuring safety, minimizing environmental impact, and optimizing emergency response strategies. To this end, this PhD work focuses on developing efficient inversion methodologies for pollutant source characterization (position and flow rate) in complex industrial environments, addressing the challenge of performing accurate and rapid identification of their characteristics with limited computational resources.A review of the numerical modelling approaches for atmospheric pollution highlights a critical gap in existing techniques. Most inverse methods struggle to offer an efficient combination of a pollutant transport and dispersion model with an inversion algorithm, capable of accounting for complex terrains with obstacles while maintaining reasonable computation times on a standard computer, making them unsuitable for industrial applications where rapid response is essential. To address this, two complementary inversion methodologies are developed and applied to a Lagrangian stochastic particle dispersion model using the SLAM software. Such a model ensures reliable turbulence modelling in a complex environment while maintaining reasonable computation time. The first developed approach, the backward inverse method, exploits the reciprocity principle to reconstruct the source term without requiring an iterative minimization process. This technique proves robust and straightforward to implement, making it suitable for industrial applications. However, its reliance on storing one backward concentration field per sensor presents scalability issues, particularly as modern measurement acquisition techniques provide ever larger data sets.To overcome these limitations, the adjoint state method is introduced as an alternativestrategy. Its application to a Lagrangian dispersion model is a novelty. Such a method significantly reduces memory requirements by storing only a single adjoint field per iteration of the minimization process, while allowing the computation of the cost function gradient independently of the number of source parameters to be determined, thus drastically reducing computation cost. The application to a Lagrangian model also allows for the parallelization of this computation. To compensate for the use of an iterative resolution process, a hybrid inversion strategy is suggested, first applying the backward inverse method to a reduced dataset, providing an initial estimate of source characteristics, which is then refined using the adjoint method to achieve higher accuracywhile maintaining computational efficiency. The backward inverse method is validated through numerical sensitivity tests carried out on two academic case studies, representing a surface boundary layer on a flat open ground and an idealized industrial site with complex-shaped obstacles. These tests aim at assessing the influence of various parameters on inversion results, including sensor spatial sampling, measurement uncertainty and plume complexity. They allow confirmation that the backward inverse method is well suited for rapid, relatively accurate estimation of source localization and flow rate, while the adjoint state method shows a promising potential in refining inversion results.Overall, this PhD work advances inverse modeling techniques for atmospheric pollutantsource characterization by developing two complementary strategies resulting from a compromise between computational efficiency and accuracy. These methodologies provide a foundation for improved efficient source characterization in complex industrial sites, with future developments needed to consolidate the results obtained and improve the robustness and applicability of the methods in real-life scenarios.

Leveraging rules on integrated 3D semantic city models for validating scenarios of urban evolution

No full text
International audienceAbstract The process to better understand the intricate evolution of our urban territories requires combining urban data from different or concurrent instances of time to provide stakeholders with more complete views of possible evolutions of a city. Geospatial rules have been proposed in the past to validate 3D semantic city models, however, there is a lack of research in the validation of multiple, concurrent and successive , scenarios of urban evolution. Using Semantic Web Ontologies and logical rules, we present a novel standards-based methodology for validating integrated city models. Using this methodology, we propose interoperable rules for validating integrated open 3D city snapshots used for representing multiple scenarios of evolution. We also implement a reproducible proof of concept test suite for applying the proposed rules. To illustrate how these contributions can be used in a real-world data validation use-case, we also provide example queries on the validated data. These queries are specifically used to construct a 3D web application for visualizing and analysing urban changes across multiple scenarios of evolution of a selected zone of interest

Impact of Immediate Feedback on Students' Learning in a Virtual Reality Environment for Chemical Education

No full text
International audienceVirtual Reality (VR) offers the opportunity to create immersive environments for safe, practice-based learning, but its intense immersion can limit critical thinking. This study explores the impact of immediate feedback on chemistry learning in an immersive environment. It involved 46 participants divided into two conditions, with and without immediate feedback. We assessed their performance, including correct answers and procedures performed, as well as perceived cognitive load. The results show that immediate feedback does not increase the perceived cognitive load, but its effect on learning depends on the tasks performed. They can be detrimental to performance for a single task, whereas they lead to significant improvements for repeated tasks. These observations highlight their usefulness in repetitive scenarios while underlining the need for appropriate design to avoid adverse effects on learning
