Vehicle center of gravity estimation without prior knowledge of vehicle parameters using a recursive least squares approach
International audienceThe position of the center of gravity (CG) of a vehicle is an important parameter as it significantly affects vehicle loads distribution and vehicle dynamics. This article proposes an approach to estimate the longitudinal position of the CG from inertial measurements. The proposed approach does not require prior knowledge of vehicle parameters apart from vehicle wheelbase. The estimation procedure combines a direct estimation from the equations of motion with the state variable filter method used in the identification of continuous time model from sampled data. The filter is chosen based on general knowledge of vehicle dynamics such as the order of magnitude of characteristic frequencies of pitch motion. The estimates are obtained through a least squares method with instrumental variables. The algorithm can be implemented in both offline batch and online recursive forms, with low computational cost suitable for embedded applications. The method is tested and validated on a high-fidelity road vehicle simulation, with good results for different load distributions

A binaural implementation of the Hearing Aid Speech Perception Index (HASPI)
International audienceIntroduction : The Hearing Aid Speech Perception Index version 2 (HASPI v2) is an intrusive speech intelligibility metric fitted to the intelligibility of sentence stimuli presented monaurally over headphones. It compares the time-frequency envelope modulation of a degraded signal, processed through a peripheral model matched to the subject’s audiogram, to the envelope modulation of an unprocessed noise-free signal processed through a normal-hearing (NH) peripheral model. This paper presents a binaural extension of HASPI v2. Methods : The binaural modifications are increasing the indicated hearing loss and providing a model of binaural interaction. The binaural HASPI was fit to binaural sentence-level intelligibility scores for NH and hearing-impaired (HI) subjects. The experimental conditions comprised combinations of room acoustics, spatial source configuration, noise, and simulated hearing-aid processing. Results : The Pearson correlation coefficients between the binaural HASPI predictions and the observed binaural intelligibility scores were 0.982 for the NH group, 0.981 for the HI group, and 0.983 for the combined groups. The corresponding RMS errors for intelligibility scores on a 0 to 1 scale were 0.050, 0.049, and 0.049. Discussion and Conclusions : The accuracy of the binaural HASPI is similar for HI and NH subjects. The accuracy compares favorably to that of existing binaural metrics

Many end-of-life plastic products escape treatment and recovery channels and end up, intentionally or not, in different biosphere compartments, particularly in aquatic environments (rivers, lakes, oceans). Urban areas are the main source of microplastics, which come mainly from the fragmentation of plastic packaging, the abrasion of tyres on roads and the release of synthetic fibers in washing machines. This thesis focuses on the transport of microplastics within combined sewer overflows, the interface between the urban wastewater system and the environment and the main urban vector of microplastic pollution. The main objective is to identify the accumulation zones and dispersion modes of microplastics in a free-surface bifurcation flow modelling a combined sewer overflow. The challenge is therefore to understand “how microplastics, depending on their physico-chemical characteristics, are distributed in the lateral branch of a bifurcation ?”. To address this issue, protocols for developing model microparticles, that reproduce the characteristics of microplastics found in the environment, were developed for use in laboratory experiments. The first protocol enabled the elaboration of particles with controlled physical properties, incorporating in the bulk a fluorescent dye to improve their tracking by optical methods. The second protocol enabled accelerated ageing of the microparticles by UV photo-oxidation, simulating the chemical degradation of microplastics taken from an urban retention basin. As for the bifurcation flow, a 3D measurement method was used to characterize the three-dimensional structures present in the lateral branch. The measurements revealed the absence of a closed separation zone. Two forms of helical recirculation flow were identified: one carried by a vertical axis, associated with a longer residence time in the recirculation zone, and the other carried by a horizontal axis, favoring better transverse mixing. Downstream, these two structures generate secondary flows that accentuate the mixing between the slow flow in the separation zone and the fast flow outside. The dynamics of the model microparticles were then studied experimentally using 4D-PTV in a bifurcation flow, by varying their physical characteristics and injection position. Apart from the density effect, which leads to an accumulation near the bed or on the surface, it has been observed that microplastics with a low Stokes number (characterizing the response time of the particles) disperse more and are more likely to enter the recirculation zone. In addition, the injection position plays a key role in the initial formation of accumulation zones, although this heterogeneity tends to diminish downstream. This thesis also led to the development of a numerical code for microparticle transport, without coefficient adjustment, suited to small-scale aqueous flows. The results of the thesis improve our understanding of the behavior of microplastics in a turbulent open channel bifurcation flow modelling a combined sewer overflow. They highlight the influence of the physico-chemical characteristics of the particles on their dispersion and accumulation rate, driven by the shapes of the flow structures. In addition, the development of protocols for the elaboration of model microparticles, representative of microplastics, and of an adapted numerical code, open the way to new studies and better prediction of their dynamics in urban aquatic environments.
This manuscript presents the work carried out during my thesis on some properties of semisimple Lie groups. The manuscript is divided into two independent parts. In the first part, we study the regularity of K-finite coefficients of unitary representations of a Lie group G for various pairs (G,K). The main question we aim to answer is the following: what is the largest alpha >= 0 for which any such coefficient is locally alpha-Hölder continuous ? Although there seems to be no reason for alpha to be anything other than 0, Lafforgue observed in his work on strong property (T) that for the pair (SO(3),SO(2)), the answer is at least 1/2. In the first chapter, we explain how to reduce the question to one of harmonic analysis on the spherical functions of Gelfand pairs. The second chapter deals with pairs (G,K) where G is compact and G/K is a symmetric space of compact type. We give a complete answer when G=KxK or G/K is of rank 1. We also conjecture what happens in higher rank. In the third chapter, we consider non-compact groups: we study the pairs (G,K) where G is a semisimple Lie group with finite center and K a maximal compact subgroup, as well as (H,K) where H is the Cartan motion group associated to G. The last chapter of this part comes back to the compact case: we give a partial answer to our conjecture using techniques of stationary phase developed in the previous chapter. The second part is devoted to the study of property (TTT), which is a strengthening of property (T) introduced by Ozawa. A measurable locally bounded map b from G to a Hilbert space is a wq-cocycle if there exists a measurable map p:G->U(H) such that the defect b(gh)-b(g)-p(g)b(h) is bounded on GxG. A group G has property (TTT) if every wq-cocycle is bounded. This is a vast generalization of the fixed-point property for affine isometric actions on Hilbert spaces. Property (TTT) for a group G implies strong rigidity statements for quasi-homomorphisms G->G'. For example, when G' is hyperbolic, the image of such a (continuous) quasi-homomorphism is relatively compact. In the fifth chapter, we prove that lattices inherit this property and that lattices in higher rank simple algebraic groups over local fields have property (TTT), which was known only in the case of SLn. In the final chapter, we introduce property (FFF_E), which is defined as boundedness of wq-cocycles with a Banach space E replacing the Hilbert space as the target space. We also define a slightly weaker property, property (T_{Q,E}), which deals with almost invariant vectors. Under some integrability conditions, we also prove that lattices inherit these properties. Finally, we study these properties in the case of super-reflexive Banach space. We consider in particular the class [H] of Banach spaces with a compatible Hilbert norm, in the case of higher rank simple algebraic groups over a local field.

Education Is Positively and Causally Linked With Spatial Navigation Ability Across the Lifespan
International audienceAbstract There is consistent evidence for a positive association between education and a wide range of cognitive abilities. In particular, spatial abilities have been shown to be strongly related to academic achievement. However, studying this association is complex as both education and spatial abilities are modulated by multivariate sociodemographic factors, likely to vary across countries. Most previous studies relied on small sample sizes or were restricted to a limited number of countries, thus were unable to control for these covariates. To overcome these limitations, we used a spatial navigation task embedded in a mobile video game. We quantified the wayfinding ability of 397,162 people across 38 countries and showed that on average, education level was positively associated with wayfinding ability. This difference was stronger in older participants and increased with task difficulty. However, the effect of education was different across countries, from near-zero and non-significant in India (Bayes’ factor = 0.08, Hedge’s g = −0.03, 95% CI = [−0.15, 0.08]), to modest and significant in Romania (Bayes’ factor = 345.44, Hedge’s g = 0.15, 95% CI = [0.08, 0.22]). We did not find any relationship between the education effect size of countries and economic indicators such as GDP per capita. Using the 1972 reform increasing the minimum school leaving age in the UK as a natural experiment, we used a regression discontinuity design to show that education has a causal effect on wayfinding ability
A linear model of dynamical sea wavenumber spectra
We propose linear dynamics that can generate a given sea wavenumber spectrum via a linear partial differential equation stirred by an additive random forcing term that is δ-correlated in time. In particular, the correlation structure of the solution to this linear dynamics converges towards the target spectrum as time passes. The main linear mechanism is a transport in Fourier space, which models the transfer of energy from large scales towards small scales. The proposed linear dynamics generalize previous works for power-law spectra in the context of hydrodynamic turbulence to more general spectra, possibly non-radial, including sea wavenumber spectra such as the JONSWAP spectrum. Finally, we present simulations of the correlation structure of the solution to these dynamics in 2D, whose spectrum converges towards the JONSWAP spectrum. These simulations are based on a finite volume method in the Fourier domain and a splitting method in time, following a recently proposed numerical method by the same authors which improves on pseudospectral simulations
