    No full text
Pollution caused by urban flooding remains overlooked by both the scientific community and management stakeholders, compared to other well-studied risks (such as the destabilisation and sweeping away of vehicles, urban furniture, buildings, and pedestrians). The effect of complex hydrodynamic processes in a flooded street network on pollutant transport has been scarcely studied. This PhD investigates the pollutant transport coming from punctual releases of matter such as chemical or biological substances found in street runoff that could infiltrate homes, close to inhabitants. The PhD is based on laboratory experiments carried out in a simplified and reduced-scale urban street network model. We examine a steady-state flood flow, already studied in previous works. The novelty of this PhD lies in examining pollutant transport within this flow. To do so, we measure mass discharges and concentration fields within streets, within an urban block with openings, and at the outlets of the street network, using conductimetry and colorimetry techniques. The first objective of the PhD is to identify the predominant hydrodynamic effects on pollutant transport and the influence of pollutant release locations. The second objective is to identify parameters governing the dynamics of polluted water introduced through openings into an urban block by varying the number of openings and the duration of the pollutant release. The main results of the PhD are as follows. (i) The distribution of pollutant mass discharges in the several streets differs from that of water discharges, both within the streets and at the outlets of the street network. This is explained by a mode of the pollutant transport that is spatially heterogeneous within the street network. The most intense mixing occurs downstream of intersections. Turbulent diffusion and dispersion due to secondary currents are the dominant mixing modes, contributing to the homogenisation of pollutant concentration. At intersections, pollutant transport is primarily driven by advection in both longitudinal and transverse directions. The pollutant plumes merge or separate following the time-averaged flow streamlines. Consequently, (ii) the pollutant distribution in the street network is highly sensitive to the exact release location relative to the bifurcation and crossroad dividing streamlines. (iii) A simplified model is proposed to describe and predict pollutant distribution at intersections, and its accuracy depends on the ability to ix precisely locate the dividing streamlines in intersections. (iv) In a porous urban block, the number of openings significantly affects maximum concentrations within the block, as well as filling times, residence times, and spatio-temporal concentration variations. (v) The initial filling duration strongly influences the flushing time of polluted water after the pollution source stops. However, the renewal rate of pollution or clear water remains constant, regardless of the filling duration, and is solely governed by the hydrodynamics of the porous urban block. (vi) An adaptation of the aggregated dead zone model is finally proposed to fit the spatially averaged concentration within the block.

Error Bounds for a Kernel-Based Constrained Optimal Smoothing Approximation

    No full text
This paper establishes error bounds for the convergence of a piecewise linear approximation of the constrained optimal smoothing problem posed in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS). This problem can be reformulated as a Bayesian estimation problem involving a Gaussian process related to the kernel of the RKHS. Consequently, error bounds can be interpreted as a quantification of the maximum a posteriori (MAP) accuracy. To our knowledge, no error bounds have been proposed for this type of problem so far. The convergence results are provided as a function of the grid size, the regularity of the kernel, and the distance from the kernel interpolant of the approximation to the set of constraints. Inspired by the MaxMod algorithm from recent literature, which sequentially allocates knots for the piecewise linear approximation, we conduct our analysis for non-equispaced knots. These knots are even allowed to be non-dense, which impacts the definition of the optimal smoothing solution and our error bound quantifiers. Finally, we illustrate our theorems through several numerical experiments involving constraints such as boundedness and monotonicity

Automated inspection of construction sites presents a significant opportunity to improve efficiency and accuracy in the building industry. This thesis addresses the challenges of interior construction progress monitoring by developing and evaluating an innovative augmented reality (AR) solution. Leveraging the superimposition of Building Information Modeling (BIM) data onto real environments through an AR headset, the proposed system aims to detect and identify HVAC and electrical components automatically. These elements, with their heterogeneous shapes, present unique challenges for computer vision. For a complete analysis, two complementary methods are presented: one, geometric, relies on a ray-tracing algorithm and 3D reconstruction of point clouds acquired by depth sensors; the other, based on 2D image analysis, uses a deep neural network. A critical barrier in applying deep learning to this domain is the scarcity of large, annotated datasets for training. To address this, the study introduces an automated process to generate photorealistic synthetic datasets from BIM models using a graphics engine. These datasets enable the training of a state-of-the-art instance segmentation network, enhanced by transfer learning methods. Experiments conducted on real construction sites demonstrate the system's potential for more efficient and reliable progress monitoring. The integration of synthetic data generation, deep learning, and AR showcases the added value of this approach, advancing current practices in indoor construction progress monitoring and highlighting its feasibility for real-world application.L'inspection automatique de chantier de construction dans le bâtiment est une problématique ardue, mais aux bénéfices importants pour les constructeurs.

Monitoring of a bridge experiencing scour using frequency domain decomposition mixed with DBSCAN algorithm: unsupervised modal analysis of output-only system

    No full text
International audienceThis study proposes a new method for monitoring bridges under scour considering an output-only system. From classical operational modal analysis (OMA), the revisited frequency domain decomposition (FDD) technique is applied to identify the modal parameters of the system. An eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) of the power spectral density matrix using the Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC) value leads to defining a continuous base of eigenvectors through the studied frequency range. The method called EVD-MAC is then applied to a bridge subjected to varying environmental and traffic loads. In this real case study, the subspaces of EVD-MAC are used to represent the frequency behavior of the system with uncorrelated components. This makes it possible to identify clusters using unsupervised machine learning algorithms where each cluster corresponds to one presumed mode. The analysis is carried out with respect to specific environmental factors, including temperature and water level, which influence the system's behavior. Scour assessments 1 are conducted based on variations in natural frequencies observed in more than a year of monitoring data, demonstrating the utility and automation potential of this approach

An improved TCAD simulation procedure for platinum diffused silicon power diodes

    No full text
International audienceSilicon bipolar power diodes require carrier lifetime engineering to reduce switching time. Platinum diffusion is the most used method to achieve lifetime reduction. Platinum diffusion in silicon is a well understood process, however, its modeling for TCAD device simulations is lacking. In this paper, we propose a new physically precise method of modeling platinum induced defects in silicon power diodes. We show that the precision of this new method enables truly predictive simulation of silicon power diodes

A note on Buell’s Theorem on length four Büchi sequences

    No full text
International audienceBüchi sequences are sequences whose second difference of squares is the sequence (2,..., 2), like for instance (6, 23, 32, 39) – so they can be seen as a generalization of arithmetic progressions. No (non-trivial) length 5 Büchi sequence is known to exist. Length four Büchi sequences were parameterized by D. A. Buell in 1987. We revisit his theorem, fixing the statement (about 26% of the Büchi sequences from R. G. E. Pinch's 1993 table were missed), and giving a much simpler proof

    No full text
International audienceFoundation Models for Robotics (FMRs) promise to bring large-scale, generalist intelligence to embodied systems, yet they remain limited in their ability to integrate perception, action, and reasoning in physically grounded environments. In this paper, we argue that advancing FMRs requires drawing inspiration from biological systems-specifically human cognition, development, and sensorimotor learning. We outline five key bio-inspired principles for future FMRs: (1) memory architectures incorporating semantic, episodic, and procedural structures; (2) grounded structured reasoning, as exemplified by embodied chain-of-thought (E-CoT) processes; (3) integration of multimodal sensorimotor feedback, including touch and proprioception; (4) self-motivated learning through simulated play and intrinsic exploration; and (5) neural efficiency through sparse expert activation, functional specialization, and modular reasoning. These elements enable generalization, compositionality, and robustness-traits long demonstrated by humans but underrepresented in current robotic models. While this work does not address reliability and safety in depth, we identify them as essential future directions for developing trustworthy, human-aligned FMRs.Les Modèles Fondamentaux pour la Robotique (FMR) promettent d'apporter une intelligence généraliste à grande échelle aux systèmes incarnés.

Biomarkers in acute kidney injury settings to predict interventions and outcomes: the MARKISIO study

    No full text
International audienceIntroduction: Predicting the need for renal replacement therapy (RRT) in acute kidney injury (AKI) remains challenging. The utility of biomarkers was explored during previous studies which were biased as RRT indications relied on clinician opinion rather than evidence. Those studies preceded trials that clarified RRT initiation criteria. We aimed to assess biomarkers in predicting criteria for RRT initiation in severe AKI patients.Material and methods: This is an ancillary study of the AKIKI2 trial. Patients with severe AKI (stage 3) receiving invasive mechanical ventilation and/or vasopressors were included. Blood and urine samples were collected within 12 h after the occurrence of severe AKI when feasible, depending on the availability of trained research staff and appropriate sample storage infrastructure. The primary endpoint was the onset of precise criteria for RRT initiation within 72 h after severe AKI. We analyzed routine serum biomarkers (pH, serum potassium, serum creatinine) and novel urinary and serum biomarkers (CCL14, KIM1, nicotinamide and its metabolites, cDPP3, plasma proenkephalin A 119-159).Results: Among the 256 patients, 101 (39%) met at least one criterion for RRT initiation or died within 72 h. No biomarker demonstrated satisfactory predictive performance for the primary endpoint. No novel biomarker was significantly associated with the occurrence of MAKE60. In multivariable analysis, 'SAPSIII' and 'Serum potassium level at D0' were significantly associated with the occurrence of MAKE60.Conclusion: Neither routine nor novel biomarkers demonstrated conclusive predictive accuracy for the need for RRT in severe AKI patients. Given evidence-based criteria for initiating RRT, the tested biomarkers may not effectively guide RRT initiation

Haptic Training Simulators in medical education

    No full text
International audienceThe use of simulators based on virtual reality and haptic techniques for training medical gestures can offer a solution for acquiring the necessary dexterity without posing any risk to patients. However, the development of such simulators necessitates a multidisciplinary approach and extensive work, spanning from analyzing practice and training gestures to technically designing the simulator and validating it from a didactic standpoint. This chapter, drawing upon the expertise of various researchers in mechatronics, computer graphics, and didactics, addresses these points to propose a global iterative process to help design Haptic Training Simulators

Dynamic cloaking in elastic thin plates using architected metamaterials

    No full text
International audienceWe investigate the case of cloaking metamaterials for Kirchhoff-Love plates. We propose a design methodology still based on the geometrical transformation method initially introduced by Pendry [1], no longer with the aim of transforming the governing equation of Kirchhoff-Love plates but with the aim of generating curved waveguides forcing bending waves to propagate in the direction advocated by the preliminary idea of cloaking. Numerical results show that the resulting metamaterial is capable of making a hole in a plate invisible over a wide frequency band.</div
