Cyclodextrins as molecular carriers for biopesticides: a review

    No full text
International audienceNature is a source of biologically active products that can act as fungicides, bactericides, acaricides, herbicides and insecticides. However, the application of these biopesticides can be challenging because they are generally insoluble in aqueous phases, highly volatile and unstable. One strategy to promote their use is their encapsulation into natural hosts, cyclodextrins. Cyclodextrins are food-grade and readily biodegradable oligosaccharides obtained from the enzymatic degradation of starch. Encapsulation in cyclodextrins would offer many advantages such as increased solubility, lower release rates and protection against chemical and physical degradation. Herein, we review the efficacy of cyclodextrin/natural compound inclusion complexes for crop protection. We discuss preharvest treatment and the different stages of the postharvest handling such as storage, distribution, packaging and marketing

Ascorbate oxidation driven by PM2.5-bound metal(loid)s extracted in an acidic simulated lung fluid in relation to their bioaccessibility

International audienceAbstract The oxidative potential (OP) is defined as the ability of inhaled PM components to catalytically/non-catalytically generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and deplete lung antioxidants. Although several studies have measured the OP of particulate matter (PM OP) soluble components using different antioxidants under neutral pH conditions, few studies have measured PM OP with acidic lung fluids. This study provides new insights into the use of acidic rather than neutral fluids in OP assays. Thus, the first aim of this study was to clarify the effect of using an acidic lung fluid on ascorbic acid (AA) depletion. This was achieved by measuring the oxidative potential (OP-AA) of individual compounds known to catalyze the AA oxidation (CuSO 4 , CuCl 2 , and 1,4-NQ) in artificial lysosomal fluid (ALF, pH 4.5), a commonly used acidic simulated lung fluid, and in a neutral fluid (phosphate-buffered saline (PBS1x), pH 7.4). Our results from these individual compounds showed a significant decrease of OP-AA in the acidic fluid (ALF) with respect to the neutral fluid (PBS). Then, the second aim of this work was to investigate whether the OP-AA assay could be applied to PM 2.5 samples extracted in acidic conditions. For this purpose, OP-AA and bioaccessible concentrations of metal(loid)s (V, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Sb, and Pb) of PM 2.5 samples collected in an urban-industrial area that were extracted in ALF were analyzed. The mean volume-normalized OP (OP-AAv) value was 0.10 ± 0.07 nmol min −1 m −3 , clearly lower than the values found in the literature at neutral pH. OP-AAv values were highly correlated with the ALF-bioaccessible concentration of most of the studied metal(loid)s, mainly with Cu and Fe

Toto-Cell: A new software to analyze cellular events during video-microscopy

    No full text
International audienceVideo-microscopy is a technology widely used to follow, in a single cell manner, cell behavior. A number of new studies are searching a way to track these behaviors by artificial intelligence; unfortunately some real-time events still have to be track manually. For that reason, we developed a software that helps the experimenter to analyze collected data. Toto-cell is very simple to use and it can be adapted at different type of analyses or treatments. It allows a wide new range of parameters that were nearly impossible to calculate only by hand. We thus developed this new software using HEC-1-A endometrial cell line to track different cellular parameters such as: the number of normal/abnormal mitosis, the ratio per day of death, mitosis, cell fusions or finally the length between two mitosis cycles. We treated our cells with cisplatin, doxorubicin or AZD5363 (an Akt inhibitor) to obtain different cellular events. What emerged is a huge heterogeneity for these analyzed parameters between the cells in a single treatment which is clearly demonstrated by the results provided by Toto-Cell. In conclusion, our software is an important tool to facilitate the analysis of video-microscopy, in a quantifying and qualifying manner. It enables a higher accuracy when compared to manual calculations

    No full text
This thesis investigates the evolving relationships between universities and their surrounding territories, focusing on the way these institutions contribute to regional development across various dimensions. The research first examines existing literature on the historical evolution of university missions, situating these changes within broader cultural, political, economic, social, and technological shifts. Additionally, it traces the development of methods for measuring university impact, nothing the strengths and limitations of current approaches. Through a comparative case study of the University du Littoral Côte d'Opale (ULCO) and Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), this study delves into the histories of both institutions, analyzing the development of their three core missions and their respective impacts. A methodology is thus proposed to capture the direct, indirect, and induced effects of each university's activities on both local and global scales, providing a comparative analysis that highlights distinct contributions and challenges. Addressing a gap in the literature, this research also introduces a four-step analytical framework aimed at assessing the position and role of each university within its unique ecosystem. This framework conceptualizes universities as ecosystem leaders, responsible not only for generating economic impacts but also for fostering dynamic networks of public, private, and civic actors within their territories. By applying a mixed-method approach that integrates quantitative economic data with qualitative insights from regional stakeholders, this study offers a comprehensive view of the university ecosystem model, proposing a reconceptualization of the "third-mission" to encompass broader ecosystemic responsibilities. The findings underscore the diverse roles of universities as both economic drivers and socio-cultural anchors, advancing a nuanced understanding of their impacts in varied regional contexts.

    No full text
