LON/D — Sub-problem landscape analysis in decomposition-based multi-objective decomposition
International audienceWe explore the underlying difficulties of sub-problems arising from decomposition in multi-objective optimization. Decomposition algorithms, such as MOEA/D, split the original multi-objective problem into a set of single-objective sub-problems using a scalarizing function. A weighting coefficient vector defines each sub-problem. We examine the relative difficulty of these sub-problems based on their weight vector and the chosen scalar function---either weighted sum or weighted Tchebycheff. Our approach involves creating a landscape for each sub-problem and analyzing its local optima network (LON). We contribute by jointly visualizing the LONs of sub-problems, defining LON features for decomposition, and examining their interaction with problem properties and their impact on algorithm performance. An extensive experimental analysis of bi-objective NK-landscapes reveals that landscape properties depend not only on the weight vector and scalar function but also on the objectives' intrinsic difficulty and their degree of conflict. These factors directly affect the relative performance of MOEA/D for each sub-problem. Among the landscape features explored, the size of each sub-problem's global optimum basin of attraction showed the strongest impact on the performance of decomposition-based multi-objective optimization
Improving mechanical stability of SBA-15 monoliths prepared from polymeric scaffolds replication using bentonite clay
International audienceThe preparation of porous yet mechanically stable centimetric monoliths remains challenging using traditional methods. Herein, hierarchical SBA-15-based porous monoliths, with three levels of porosity (micro- and mesopores from the pores arrangement of the silica structure, and macropores from the replication of polymer beads), were prepared by simple inverse-opal technique. Though the addition of bentonite and proper thermal treatment, solids with specific surface areas above 300 m2/g and resistance toward compression above 50 N were obtained, which is coherent with a use as heterogeneous catalyst supports
Porous ionic liquids based on biocompatible CD-MOFs
International audienceBiocompatible cyclodextrin-based metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) form porous suspensions when dispersed in ionic liquids. We present two porous ionic liquids prepared using different CD-MOFs, which exhibit up to 56% higher carbon dioxide absorption compared to the pure ionic liquid at 303 K. These porous suspensions, when prepared under moisture-free conditions, demonstrate stability for several weeks provided smaller CD-MOF crystals are used. The suspension structure was characterized using X-ray scattering, while light scattering measurements were employed to monitor their stability over time
Effect of different composts on the dynamic of soil organic pollutants, microbial network interactions and multifunctionality in an urban garden made from a former brownfield
International audienceBrownfield requalification in urban areas can enable their ecological reclamation by improving their ecosystem services. In this perspective, their transformation into urban farms is underexplored due to the potential risks associated with pollutants transfer into vegetables and their low soil functionality. The current study aims to improve soil quality based on the principles of circular economy and to assess the transfer of organic pollutants into vegetables produced in an urban farm built from a former brownfield. For this purpose, locally available composts made from manure, leaves and fragmented rameal wood (FRW) were applied to a plot of a brownfield being converted into an urban garden in Roubaix (France). Thereafter, mixed vegetables (carrot, onion, radish, zucchini, potato, and chard) were cultivated for six months. After harvest, soil microbial communities were studied using metabarcoding of 16S RNA gene and ITS region, along with the dynamic of organic pollutants (petroleum hydrocarbons, dioxins/furans) in the soils and the produced vegetables. Globally, our results showed that the concentrations of these pollutants in vegetables were similar to those of vegetables originating from non-contaminated soils. Compost applications shaped the composition of soil bacterial communities and improved soil total metabolic activity and richness. Furthermore, amendment with manure and FRW composts improved the proportion of positive interactions between fungal and bacterial communities, suggesting more bacteria-fungi facilitation for SOM decomposition and nutrient recycling. Consistently, the calculated ecosystem service metrics and the soil quality index (T_SQI) showed a higher efficiency for FRW compost, demonstrating a relationship between soil microbial network characteristics and functioning
Science fiction and the quest for innovation
International audienceThis special issue editorial examines the dynamic and evolving intersection of science fiction (SF) and innovation, spotlighting nine contributions that collectively offer contemporary debates at this crossroads. It shows how SF has transcended its traditional entertainment function to become a significant resource for strategic foresight, ethical deliberation, and organizational creativity. By synthesizing insights from management, cultural studies, design, and psychology, the editorial underscores SF's capacity to illuminate not only technological possibilities but also the social, ethical, and political contexts in which technologies operate. The featured studies detail methods such as diegetic prototyping, speculative design, design fiction, and consumer-created “flash fiction,” illustrating the diverse applications of SF across industries and research domains. They also highlight critical tensions, including the risk of overlooking social justice concerns, the commodification of SF for corporate agendas, and the challenges of ensuring inclusivity in SF-driven innovation processes. Collectively, these contributions argue for the incorporation of SF into interdisciplinary research agendas and organizational practices, stressing that its transformative potential hinges on addressing the ethical, cultural, and power dynamics that shape real-world outcomes. By engaging with both techno-optimistic and critical perspectives, this issue offers a nuanced framework for harnessing SF's creativity and anticipatory depth, advocating a turn toward more equitable, sustainable, and reflective innovation practices
