Harmonization and Lexical Variations in New Testament Quotations of the Septuagint: Insights from the Gospel of Matthew (Conference Paper)

    No full text
International audienceThis paper delivered at the SBL explores the phenomenon of harmonization and lexical variations in New Testament quotations of the Septuagint (LXX), focusing on instances in the Gospel of Matthew. By examining key readings from Codex Bezae, a significant 5th-century Greek-Latin manuscript, the study delves into the complexities of how the New Testament text aligns with or diverges from the LXX. Specific attention is given to variant readings in Matthew, particularly where harmonization with the Septuagint is identified. The article also discusses the broader implications of these harmonizations for both New Testament textual criticism and Septuagint studies. By analyzing examples such as Matthew 1:23 and Matthew 2:18, the author sheds light on how these variations reflect deeper interactions between the New Testament text, the LXX, and the Hebrew Masoretic Text (MT), offering insights into the transmission of biblical texts and the challenges of establishing an "original" reading

International audienceThe episode of the Woman Caught in Adultery ("Pericope Adulterae"), found in the Gospel of John (7:52–8:11), is a well-known story in which Jesus prevents the stoning of a woman accused of adultery by declaring: "Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." However, this pericope raises questions regarding its placement in the biblical text, its thematic elements, and its style, which appears closer to the Synoptic Gospels than to John. The variations in its position within Greek manuscripts, such as the Codex Bezae, suggest a specific intention to place this passage in an unusual spot. A close examination of this codex reveals lexical and thematic parallels with the episode of the Golden Calf in Exodus, indicating that the original intent of the text may have been altered over time.

    No full text
International audiencePrevious studies have established that social capital plays a significant role in individual tax-related behaviors, including inclinations toward tax evasion and compliance. This study seeks to extend the understanding of tax morale in Spain using data from the Public Opinion and Fiscal Policy Survey (CIS, Study 3332). We use factor analysis with maximum likelihood extraction and Varimax rotation to identify key social capital variables and tax attitudes. We identify profiles based on their social capital and tax compliance using cluster analysis. We will apply hierarchical clustering with Ward's chaining and k-means clustering. The robustness of the resulting profiles will be confirmed by discriminant analysis and a multilayer perceptron neural network, which will look for higher rates of correct classification as an indicator of improved profile consistency. Our findings suggest that identifying Spanish tax citizens' profiles helps analyze social capital in tax policy. After our analysis, we have determined that enhancing the accumulation of social capital variables leads to better tax adherence

Ultrasound Depolymerization and Characterization of Poly- and Oligosaccharides from the Red Alga Solieria chordalis (C. Agardh) J. Agardh 1842

International audienceRed seaweed carrageenans are frequently used in industry for its texturizing properties and have demonstrated antiviral activities that can be used in human medicine. However, their high viscosity, high molecular weight, and low skin penetration limit their use. Low-weight carrageenans have a reduced viscosity and molecular weight, enhancing their biological properties. In this study, ι-carrageenan from Solieria chordalis, extracted using hot water and dialyzed, was depolymerized using hydrogen peroxide and ultrasound. Ultrasonic depolymerization yielded fractions of average molecular weight (50 kDa) that were rich in sulfate groups (16% and 33%) compared to those from the hydrogen peroxide treatment (7 kDa, 6% and 9%). The potential bioactivity of the polysaccharides and low-molecular-weight (LMW) fractions were assessed using WST-1 and LDH assays for human fibroblast viability, proliferation, and cytotoxicity. The depolymerized fractions did not affect cell proliferation and were not cytotoxic. This research highlights the diversity in the biochemical composition and lack of cytotoxicity of Solieria chordalis polysaccharides and LMW fractions produced by a green (ultrasound) depolymerization method

    No full text
International audienceFor several years, he specifications of cultural structures have called for a link between artistic proposal and mediation. Many artists redefine their work and their practice at the crossroads of these still too distinct poles from the point of view of public policies. The social dimension of culture is more topical than ever, as it contributes to the challenge of living together. In this context where cultural rights become essential, we choose a pragmatist approach to understand the forces at play. We report the deployment of projects where the different actors get off to a good start with a guideline that addresses the inhabitants through multiple collaborations and more the methodological DIY put in place. Seizing it can be a challenge with regard to the voluntarism in action at the edge of the framework of existing devices. This is the challenge taken up by the rhyzomatic project of the C(h)œur des femmes carried by Vanille Fiaux.

Emancipation and its limits in the Anthropocene

The French Military Redeployment and Counterterrorism after Niger

    No full text
International audienceIn an interview with the French magazine Le Point at the end of August 2023, French President Emmanuel Macron claimed that “French [counterterrorism] military operations in the Sahel were a success, as they prevented the establishment of a caliphate a few thousand kilometers from our borders.” This statement came one year after France’s withdrawal of its military forces from Mali and several weeks after the July 26 coup d’état in Niger. France subsequently withdrew its 1500 soldiers from Niger, with the French President saying in September 2023, “there is no more Françafrique.” Russia’s Wagner organization has attempted to fill the strategic void left by the French withdrawal, but its future after the death of its leader remains uncertain. While this may seem like the end for France’s military influence in the region, it is important to note that France did not withdraw completely, but redeployed and maintained its forces elsewhere in the region, notably in Chad. That means that France has not left a strategic vacuum in the Sahel, but has moved its forces to the territory of other partners where the defense treaty system remains in effect. France retains its capacity to strike across much of the region. Considering the French move from a historical perspective, it may be just a temporary redeployment, as France’s military was repeatedly asked to leave its partners in a variety of circumstances in the past. The French Government, however, often returned in force in emergencies. This paper will analyze the strategic rationale of the French redeployment in the Sahel in 2022 and 2023 and what it means for overall French counterterrorism strategy. It will also look at the difference in French strategic thinking regarding the local threat to its partners by highly-mobile “terrorist” military units affiliated with AQMI and ISIS and the transnational threat directly to French citizens and French territory. This has been at least partially overlooked in the literature on the topic. In this way, the paper provides an analysis of the latest developments in French counterterrorism strategy in the Sahel, and will argue that it is unlikely that France has definitively abandoned the region
