“I’ve always felt in the middle of hearing people and the deaf community.” What is it like to grow up with hearing loss?
International audienceObjective: Hearing loss in children and adolescents can significantly impact social interactions, language development, and emotional well-being, often leading to academic and mental health challenges. This qualitative, retrospective study examines how individuals reflect on their experiences growing up with hearing loss, including the challenges they faced, the support they received, and the coping strategies they developed over time.Design and study sample: Participants aged 16 and older with personal experiences of hearing loss were recruited through audiology services in England and Scotland (UK), as well as community and online channels. Nineteen semi-structured interviews were conducted in person or online, following a flexible approach to explore participants’ retrospective accounts of growing up with hearing loss. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify, refine, and review themes, ensuring diverse perspectives were captured through collaborative analysis. Results: Interrelated themes were identified from participants’ reflections of growing up with hearing loss, showing how they continually adapt and reshape their experiences as part of an ongoing coping and adjustment process across various social contexts. Conclusions: This study highlights the lasting impacts of growing up with hearing loss on communication, social relationships, emotional well-being, and education
International audienceThe folio 155 of BnF Copte 129,8, long catalogued as a Sahidic witness to Luke 22, proves instead to be a non-biblical fragment whose nature was misunderstood because of its strong thematic resemblance to the scene of the agony in Gethsemane (Matt 26:36–46; Mark 14:32–42; Luke 22:39–46). A close analysis of the text, based on a detailed transliteration and a verse-by-verse comparison with the Synoptic accounts, shows that it represents a catechetical reworking rather than a scriptural copy. The author freely blends elements from Luke, Matthew, and, more marginally, Mark, producing a condensed narrative marked by summaries, recollections, and harmonising formulations.Such a procedure corresponds closely to the methods characteristic of Sahidic homiletic literature attributed to Pseudo-Cyril of Jerusalem. Comparison with two significant homiletic witnesses, M610 and M595 of the Pierpont Morgan Library, reveals notable literary and theological parallels, especially in the selection of Gospel citations, in the management of narrative transitions, and in the recurrent use of verbs of knowing and movement applied to Jesus. These convergences strengthen the hypothesis that the folio constitutes the remnant of a Sahidic homily inspired by Luke, although any definitive attribution must remain cautious. Autor swobodnie łączy elementy zaczerpnięte z Łukasza, Mateusza i – w mniejszym stopniu – z Marka, tworząc narrację skondensowaną, pełną podsumowań, przypomnień i harmonizujących sformułowań.Taka metoda odpowiada typowym zabiegom homiletycznej literatury sahidyckiej przypisywanej pseudo-Cyrylowi Jerozolimskiemu. Porównanie z dwoma znaczącymi świadectwami homiletycznymi – M610 i M595 z Pierpont Morgan Library – ujawnia istotne paralele literackie i teologiczne, zwłaszcza w doborze cytatów ewangelicznych, sposobie prowadzenia przejść narracyjnych oraz w częstym użyciu czasowników oznaczających wiedzę i ruch w odniesieniu do Jezusa. Zbieżności te wzmacniają hipotezę, że folio stanowi pozostałość homilii sahidyckiej inspirowanej Łukaszem i przekazywanej w środowisku cyryliańskim, choć wszelka ostateczna atrybucja musi pozostać ostrożna
