On some Fraïssé limits with free amalgamation

    No full text
In this work a general way is given to construct some examples of NSOP1 theories aslimits of some Fraïssé class satisfying strong conditions. These limits will satisfy existence, that Kimindependence coincides with algebraic independence, and that forking independence is obtained byforcing base monotonicity on Kim-forking. These theories also come with a stationary independencerelation. This study is based on results of Baudisch, Chernikov, Kruckman and Ramsey

    Looking for stabilizers in NSOP1_1

    No full text
In this work we study some examples of groups definable and type-de nable in NSOP1theories. We exhibit some behaviors of these groups that differ from the ones of groups definable insimple theories. We take interest in the notions of generics and stabilizers, and define the Kim-stabilizer.We apply the notion of Kim-stabilizer and the notion of stabilizer from Hrushovski to the context of agroup G definable in an NSOP1 field F satisfying some assumptions to show that in this context thereexist a finite to one embedding of a type-definable subgroup of G of bounded index into an algebraicgroup over F. We then show that definable groups in Frobenius fields of characteristic 0 satisfy theseconditions

Agromining of Nickel: Finally Becoming a Reality at Commercial Scale

    No full text
International audienceInitially proposed over 40 years ago, the biotechnology of agromining has had a long and tortuous gestational process on the way to becoming a proven commercial reality. The field has been marred by claims for unrealistic yields made by startup companies. Nevertheless, nickel agromining has become a viable business proposition for several companies now operating “metal farms” around the world. In this review, we provide a critical perspective on the current direction of the field and potential pitfalls still to overcome. Challenges and risks include the urgency for discovery of suitable metal crop species before extinction from habitat loss, the rapid domestication of wild species to be accommodated in regular cultivation systems, and the potential introduction and escape of non-native plant species. Initiatives to identify new hyperaccumulators using X-ray fluorescence scanning of herbarium collections should target the biodiversity hotspots of the world and should be coupled with ex situ conservation of threatened hyperaccumulator plant species in botanical gardens. With the rapid progress in the science needed to find and develop more effective hyperaccumulators, it is an exciting time for nickel agromining. The next few years are expected to be a make-or-break period in its transformation to a commercial reality

Transfer of generalized amalgamation in simple theories

    No full text
We give an abstract framework to transfer generalized amalgamation from a simple theory to another, and we apply it to theories of lovely pairs and of bounded PAC structures. We show in particular that bounded pseudo-algebraically closed fields have generalized amalgamation, regardless of their imperfection degree

    No full text

Experimental Demonstration of an IGCT/SiC PiN Diode Switching Cell Operating Without Any Turn-On Snubber

    No full text
International audienceIGCTs are attractive for high power, low-frequency converters such as HVdc MMCs because of their lower losses compared to IGBTs. However, a drawback of IGCTs is that they typically require an additional and bulky turn-on snubber circuit to limit their turn-on dI/dt. This limitation in current dynamics prevents destructive recovery from occurring in the diode of an IGCT/diode switching cell. Previous studies have shown the possibility of removing the snubber by setting strict limits to the operating range of the IGCT/Si-diode pair, which in practice strongly restrain the application of a snubberless IGCT submodule or switching cell.In this article, high-voltage, high-current, SiC PiN diodes are used successfully with IGCTs in a snubberless configuration up to 4 kV/500 A, and a comparison is made with IGCTs operating with Si PiN diodes. The IGCT turn-on behavior is analyzed, through the evaluation of the IGCT equivalent resistance during turn-on. The impact of very short reverse recovery (RR) is also investigated, with the observation and analysis of the shared voltage between the IGCT and the diode and its impact. It is found that SiC PiN diodes can operate with IGCTs without the limitations encountered with Si diodes and without requiring a turn-on snubber

French working group "geotechnics and climate change" -Carbon footprint of geotechnical structures: assessment and integration into design

    No full text
International audienceIPCC reports have demonstrated that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change are strongly correlated. The infrastructure construction sector (public works activities only) accounts for about 3,5% of France's total carbon emissions. Considering that the total impact of this field is even greater when including the building sector and other related activities, geotechnics can and must play a significant role in reducing these emissions. Despite the multiple environmental impacts, the urgency of climate change necessitates a focus on GHG emissions, which can be identified and mitigated throughout project execution by prioritizing sustainable and durable technical choices. Ideally, carbon footprint and other environmental impact assessments should cover the entire lifecycle of structures, from site investigation to exploitation, including maintenance and end-of-life site restoration. Awareness of these issues and a thorough understanding of its consequences will enable the geotechnical domain to propose effective solutions. Within this framework, the French Committee of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnics (CFMS) and the French Committee of Engineering Geology (CFGI) are working on the establishment of recommendations to provide tools for evaluating, controlling, and reducing emissions related to geotechnical works considering the French context. This work seeks to provide geotechnical professionals with quantitative methods for assessing the carbon footprint of geotechnical structures, as well as essential tools and databases. It also provides best practices for reducing this footprint and qualitative assessments of other environmental impacts within a sustainable development framework. Therefore, it underscores the importance of incorporating environmental impact assessments in geotechnical engineering to mitigate climate change effects and promote sustainable development

    No full text
International audienceIncreasing metal demand requires to move toward circular economy. This study explores domestic wastewater as a potential metal resource, assessing the effective recovery of 16 metals, 2 metalloids and phosphorus by 4 adsorbents (activated alumina, activated carbon, clinoptilolite, ferric hydroxide) and two cation-exchange resins (weak and strong). It is the first to evaluate the removal of such a wide range of elements-19 in total-comparing six different sorbents taking into account the complexity of a real wastewater, and thus providing tangible insights for the development of a recovery process. A design of experiments using batch-tests was set-up to study the effects of the material dosage, contact time and pH, and has determined the best operating conditions. We have shown that three materials have captured; 60% of the elements: P, Si, As, V, Zn, Mo, Cr and Sb for the ferric hydroxide, B, Co, Cr and Zn for the activated carbon, and Ca, Mg, Sr and Zn for the weak cation-exchange resin. A dosage of 20 g.L -1 of material was shown optimal for the capture by activated carbon and ferric hydroxide, while the weak cation-exchange resin performed best at 4 g.L -1 . A contact time of 1 h was identified as optimal for most elements and tested materials. The recovery would be substantial for Ca, Na, K, Mg, P, Si, Sr, but is still a challenge for others. Poor elements retention were shown for activated alumina and zeolite-clinoptilolite, and rapid saturation for the strong cation-exchange resin.
