Intrinsic training dynamics of deep neural networks

    No full text
A fundamental challenge in the theory of deep learning is to understand whether gradient-based training in high-dimensional parameter spaces can be captured by simpler, lower-dimensional structures, leading to so-called implicit bias. As a stepping stone, we study when a gradient flow on a high-dimensional variable θθ implies an intrinsic gradient flow on a lower-dimensional variable z=ϕ(θ)z = ϕ(θ), for an architecture-related function ϕϕ. We express a so-called intrinsic dynamic property and show how it is related to the study of conservation laws associated with the factorization ϕϕ. This leads to a simple criterion based on the inclusion of kernels of linear maps which yields a necessary condition for this property to hold. We then apply our theory to general ReLU networks of arbitrary depth and show that, for any initialization, it is possible to rewrite the flow as an intrinsic dynamic in a lower dimension that depends only on zz and the initialization, when ϕϕ is the so-called path-lifting. In the case of linear networks with ϕϕ the product of weight matrices, so-called balanced initializations are also known to enable such a dimensionality reduction; we generalize this result to a broader class of {\em relaxed balanced} initializations, showing that, in certain configurations, these are the \emph{only} initializations that ensure the intrinsic dynamic property. Finally, for the linear neural ODE associated with the limit of infinitely deep linear networks, with relaxed balanced initialization, we explicitly express the corresponding intrinsic dynamics

Eco-friendly Insulating Materials for Transformers in MVDC and HVDC Power Networks

International audienceThis work investigates the viability of natural and synthetic ester liquids as potential alternatives to mineral oil in MVDC and HVDC transformer insulation systems. Finite Element Method simulations (FEM) were performed using the measured dielectric properties of the oils and their impregnated pressboards as input parameters to evaluate their influence on steady state electric field distribution. A comparison on the field distribution under AC and DC condition is performed for the different materials, identifying regions of maximum stress around the corona head and high voltage electrode. The temperature dependence of electrical conductivity values of the materials and their effect on the steady state DC electric field distribution is explored. The higher conductivity of ester liquids when compared to mineral oil provides a more uniform field redistribution between the oil and pressboard, also facilitating the shift of maximum electrical stress from the oil to pressboard. The results support the technical merits of using ester-based insulation material for field stress equalization in HVDC networks

International audienceBackground: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) involve chronic inflammatory mechanisms to which periodontal periodontal dysbiosis may contribute. The Planetary Health Diet (PHD), a sustainable plant-based model for NCD prevention remains poorly explored regarding its impact on the interdental microbiota. Objective: To evaluate whether an einkorn-enriched PHD can reduce interdental microbiota dysbiosis and promote oral and general health.Design: BIOQUALIM was a 3-month, single-arm, uncontrolled longitudinal pilot trial conducted under real-life conditions. Participants reduced their meat consumption by 50% and consumed ≥100g/day of whole-grain einkorn. Interdental microbiota, periodontal indices, digestive comfort, and quality of life were assessed at baseline, one and three months. Results: Total bacterial load (p = 0.0236), Tannerella forsythia (p < 0.001) and Treponema denticola (p < 0.001) decreased significantly. Periodontal health improved significantly-probing depth decreased from 1.14 ± 0.70 mm to 0.58 ± 0.51 mm (p < 0.0001) and clinical attachment loss from 1.33 ± 0.73 mm to 0.60 ± 0.57 mm (p < 0.0001). Gingival inflammation decreased by > 60%, and bleeding on probing decreased by >70% (p = 0.0004). Digestive comfort improved-normalized stool frequency (p = 0.0009) and reduced postprandial drowsiness (p = 0.0196). Quality-oflife scores increased significantly (p = 0.039).Conclusion: An einkorn-enriched PHD was associated with improved interdental microbiota, periodontal health, and well-being, supporting a One Health link between sustainable nutrition, oral microbiota modulation and inflammation-related pathways.

ON THE FILTERED SPECTRAL ABSCISSA FOR DELAY-DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS AND ITS ROLE IN THE BOUNDARY CONTROL OF HYPERBOLIC PDES

    No full text
Feedback control systems governed by delay-differential equations of neutral type may be fragile, in the sense that arbitrarily small parametric perturbations and implementation errors of the control may destroy the exponential stability of the target closed-loop system. Such instability problems can be resolved by including a low-pass filter in the control loop, on the condition that the filter itself is not destabilizing. The analysis of this condition for delay-difference equations has recently led to the notion of filtered spectral abscissa. In this paper, we first analyze the filtered spectral abscissa, where we remove the stringent condition of commensurate delays previously made, and we derive novel mathematical and computationally tractable characterizations. Second, we highlight the role of the filtered spectral abscissa in the context of boundary control of first-order hyperbolic partial differential equations, grounded in integral transformations that result in delaydifference equation models with both discrete and distributed delays. In particular, we show that in the situation where reflection terms cannot be robustly canceled out by the control -that is, their direct cancellation would lead to a fragile closed-loop system -a negative filtered spectral abscissa of the delay-difference equation, obtained by removing the distributed delay terms, is the necessary and sufficient condition -in addition to the exponential stability of the target closed-loop system -for the safe inclusion of a filter with sufficiently high cut-off

Euclid preparation. Galaxy power spectrum modelling in redshift space

    No full text
International audienceAccurate modelling of redshift-space distortions (RSD) is essential for maximizing the cosmological information extracted from large galaxy redshift surveys. In preparation for the forthcoming analysis of the Euclid spectroscopic data, we investigate three approaches to modelling RSD effects on the power spectrum multipoles of mock Hαα emission line galaxies. We focus on two one-loop perturbation theory models -- the effective field theory (EFT) and velocity difference generator (VDG{\rm VDG_ \infty}) -- which differ in their treatment of the real-to-redshift space mapping on small scales, and a third approach, the BACCO emulator, which adopts a hybrid strategy combining perturbation theory with high-resolution N-body simulations. We assess the ability of these models to recover key cosmological parameters, including the expansion rate hh, the cold dark matter density parameter ωcω_{\rm c}, and the scalar amplitude AsA_{\rm s}, across four redshift bins spanning 0.9z1.80.9 \leq z \leq 1.8. In each bin, we find that VDG{\rm VDG_ \infty} and BACCO outperform the EFT model across all scales up to kmax0.35hMpc1k_{max} \lesssim 0.35 h\,Mpc^{-1} . While BACCO saturates in constraining power at intermediate scales and higher redshift, the VDG{\rm VDG_ \infty} model continues to improve parameter constraints beyond kmax0.30hMpc1k_{max} \gtrsim 0.30 h\,Mpc^{-1}. The EFT model, although robust on large scales, exhibits significant parameter biases for kmax0.25hMpc1k_{max} \gtrsim 0.25 h\,Mpc^{-1}, limiting its applicability to Euclid-like Hαα samples. Among the full perturbation theory-based models, the enhanced treatment of small-scale RSD effects in VDG{\rm VDG_ \infty} improves cosmological parameter constraints by up to a factor of two

    No full text
