    The Open/Closed Gromov-Witten/Hurwitz Correspondence and Localized World Sheets for Completed Cycles

    International audienceWe discuss the open/closed version of the Gromov-Witten/Hurwitz correspondence. The duality equates the relative Gromov-Witten invariants and the count of covers of the target space with prescribed holonomies at boundaries. We clarify the projective large N limit as well as the role of the completed versus the ordinary cycles associated to the bulk and the boundary vertex operators respectively. We provide an example check of both the correspondence and the fact that cycles dual to closed strings need to be completed. Moreover, we identify the connected world sheets that contribute to an equivariantly localized amplitude in the bulk that is solely due to a completion term. We also propose a picture for the completed cycle combinatorics that involves a localization diagram glued to a cut-and-join string interaction

    Region of Interest Segmentation and Morphological Analysis for Membranes in Cryo-Electron Tomography

    Cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) enables high resolution, three-dimensional reconstruction of biological structures, including membranes and membrane proteins. Identification of regions of interest (ROIs) is central to scientific imaging, as it enables isolation and quantitative analysis of specific structural features within complex datasets. In practice, however, ROIs are typically derived indirectly through full structure segmentation followed by post hoc analysis. This limitation is especially apparent for continuous and geometrically complex structures such as membranes, which are segmented as single entities. Here, we developed TomoROIS-SurfORA, a two step framework for direct, shape-agnostic ROI segmentation and morphological surface analysis. TomoROIS performs deep learning-based ROI segmentation and can be trained from scratch using small annotated datasets, enabling practical application across diverse imaging data. SurfORA processes segmented structures as point clouds and surface meshes to extract quantitative morphological features, including inter-membrane distances, curvature, and surface roughness. It supports both closed and open surfaces, with specific considerations for open surfaces, which are common in cryo-ET due to the missing wedge effect. We demonstrate both tools using in vitro reconstituted membrane systems containing deformable vesicles with complex geometries, enabling automatic quantitative analysis of membrane contact sites and remodeling events such as invagination. While demonstrated here on cryo-ET membrane data, the combined approach is applicable to ROI detection and surface analysis in broader scientific imaging contexts

    Evidence of ZZγZZγ production with the ATLAS detector

    International audienceThis paper presents the first evidence of the simultaneous production of two ZZ bosons and one photon with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is performed using the full Run-2 dataset, recorded from 2015 to 2018, of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1313 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140140 fb1^{-1}. The fully leptonic final state with four leptons and one photon is analyzed, ppZZγ++γpp\rightarrow ZZγ\rightarrow\ell^+\ell^-\ell'^+\ell'^-γ with ,=e\ell, \ell' = e or μμ. This final state is measured in a fiducial region where photon final-state radiation is minimized, and the photon has a transverse momentum of pTγ>20p_{\mathrm{T}}^γ> 20 GeV. Eight events are selected, with a background estimate of 0.92±0.150.92\pm0.15. This results in an observed (expected) significance of the ZZγZZγ final state of 4.4σ4.4σ (4.4σ4.4σ). The measured cross-section for ppZZγ++γpp\rightarrow ZZγ\rightarrow\ell^+\ell^-\ell'^+\ell'^-γ in the fiducial region is σZZγ=0.1440.051+0.064 (stat.)0.005+0.007 (syst.) fbσ_{ZZγ} = 0.144 _{-0.051}^{+0.064} \text{ (stat.)} _{-0.005}^{+0.007} \text{ (syst.) fb}, in agreement with the predicted Standard Model one, σfid.SM=0.1430.004+0.007σ_{\textrm{fid.}}^{\textrm{SM}} = 0.143 _{-0.004}^{+0.007} fb

    Heat during Pregnancy and Reduced Fetal Growth: Critical Windows of Exposure and the Intertwined Role of Air Pollution, Vegetation, and Social Stressors

    International audienceIncreased ambient heat exposure poses a health risk to pregnant women, which may be amplified by environmental and social determinants, but these interactions have been insufficiently characterized. We examined critical windows for the associations between heat exposure during pregnancy and fetal growth and investigated the role of air pollution, vegetation, and social stressors in these associations. Weekly exposure to ambient temperature and air pollutants (PM 2.5 , NO 2 , O 3 ) from highly resolved spatiotemporal models, vegetation, and contextual deprivation were estimated for 20,904 French women (2002-2017). Distributed lag nonlinear models evaluated associations between heat and term birth weight (tBW), tBW Z-score, and small-for-gestational-age. We further adjusted our models for air pollutants and stratified on vegetation and social determinants. Heat exposure during the first two trimesters was associated with reduced fetal growth. A mean temperature of 21.6 °C (95th percentile vs median 13.6 °C) during weeks 2-15 was associated with a reduced tBW (-199 g [95% CI: -268; -131]). These associations differed after adjusting for O 3 exposure. Trends for stronger associations were observed in women with low vegetation exposure, low social position, and high contextual deprivation.     Towards the definition of the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary: report on new advances of the Berriasian Working Group of the Subcommission on Cretaceous Stratigraphy (ICS)

    International audienceA brief report of the Berriasian Working Group (BWG) activities in 2021-2025 is presented. An updated multi-stratigraphical scheme for the upper Tithonian – lower Berriasian is prepared for the Tethyan domain, with suggestions towards the Boreal, Subboreal, South America (Neuquén Basin) and Russian-Siberian realms and provinces.A voting majority of the BWG recommends that the base of Berriasian should be shifted down, from the current position in the middle of M19n2n magnetosubchron (base of the Calpionella alpina Subzone), to the interval between magneto(sub)chrons M20n1r and M19r. The base of the C. alpina Subzone is an acme-type stratigraphical boundary defined as „a bloom of small spherical forms of C. alpina”, not accompanied by first appearance datums (FADs) of calpionellid taxa, therefore its exact position is difficult to evaluate without quantitative studies. Although a new primary marker for the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary has not yet been chosen, the interval between M20n1r and M19r contains several FADs of calpionellid, calcareous dinocyst and calcareous nannofossil taxa, most likely matching also the boundaries of radiolarian zones in the Tethys and the Pacific Realms. The interval is correlatable with the boundary interval between the middle and upper Volgian, therefore it might be applied in the Boreal Realm. An increasing amount of bio-magnetostratigraphic data from South America allows for correlation with the relatively short Corongoceras alternans Ammonite Zone. The solution would be further tested in terrestrial sections, and orbital stratigraphic model would be developed, which would facilitate long-distance correlations

    The Endless Repetition of Graffiti Writing and Removing: Gestures, Sites, Traces

    International audienceAlthough graffiti writing has been the object of numerous analyses for fifty years, the entangled practices of graffiti writers and buffers’ interventions remain understudied. By considering their actual gestures in front of urban surfaces, this text emphasizes the similarities of practices usually seen as antagonistic. Drawing on Deleuze’s masterful work about repetition and difference, it notably points out the sensitive, attentional, and technical common features of graffiti writers and buffers, the choreographic dynamics at the core of their performances, and the layered material rhythm resulting from their intertwined actions. Whether they take the form of a soothed dialogue moved by a shared experience, a trench warfare in performances, or an intense unintended collaboration, the relationships between graffiti writers and buffers appear to be driven by the transformative principle of repetition
