Never Care For What They Say ? Platform vs Genre Rules in Online Horror Narratives (2007-2024)
Research on online cultural production shows that platforms are acting as mediators that can heavily shape textual form. Yet, empirical work is often platform-bounded, making it difficult to assess whether stylistic regularities that we observe are indeed genre signals or if some of them are platform artefacts. We address this question through a cross-platform design focused on creepypasta, a digital-born horror genre circulating across heterogeneous infrastructures. Using a corpus of ∼23,000 Englishlanguage stories published from 2007 to 2024 on Reddit's /r/nosleep and the Creepypasta Fandom wiki, we compare stylistic profiles across platforms and relate them to differences in rule regimes and moderation practices, established through qualitative extraction and close reading of platform guidelines. Across readability indices, lexical diversity measures, syntactic proxies, and a cross-fit feature-based model, we find that platform membership leaves only a narrow stylistic imprint, largely reducible to a single architectural rule: r/NoSleep's mandatory first-person narration. Beyond this constraint, differences are modest and fail to form coherent platform-specific stylistic signatures. This helps us define what is stylistically common in creepypastas, and understand what the genre is to its writers beyond the topics it deals with or the platform it is written on
Vegetation and climate changes during the Early–Middle Pleistocene transition: Evidence from Acıgöl Basin (Southwestern Anatolia, Türkiye)
International audienceThe Early–Middle Pleistocene Transition (EMPT, ~1.4–0.4 Ma) marks a major shift in the Earth's climate system, with glacial–interglacial cycles evolving from ~40,000-year obliquity-paced intervals to longer, asymmetric ~100,000-year cycles. This transition occurred without major changes in orbital forcing, implying that internal climate mechanisms played a key role. However, these mechanisms remain poorly understood, especially in the understudied Eastern Mediterranean region. Here we reconstruct environmental and climate changes across the EMPT from the Acıgöl Basin in southwestern Türkiye (1.3–0.5 Ma). Vegetation dynamics, lake-level changes, and climate variability were investigated using a multi-proxy (pollen, NPPs) and multi-method approach combining the Modern Analogue Technique (MAT), Weighted Averaging Partial Least Squares regression (WA-PLS), Random Forest (RF), Boosted Regression Trees (BRT), and Climatic Amplitude Method (CAM).The pollen record reveals a persistent dominance of steppe vegetation, alternating between Amaranthaceae–Artemisia assemblages and grass-rich steppes with limited forest expansion during more humid phases. Relict taxa are rare and decline markedly during the EMPT, indicating that Southwestern Anatolia was less favourable for moisture-demanding species than other Mediterranean regions. Alternating abundances of Botryococcus and Chrysophyceae suggest fluctuations in lake level and trophic status under predominantly oligotrophic conditions. Pollen-based climate reconstructions indicate a general aridification trend, especially between 1.1 and 0.8 Ma, with more humid interglacials and drier glacials. These patterns align with other Eastern Mediterranean records and reflect both high-latitude ice-sheet dynamics and low-latitude forcing. Wavelet analysis reveals a dominant 41-ka obliquity cyclicity around 1.1 Ma
Four high resolution solar atlases of the 3000 Å - 9900 Å range
We present a set of useful high resolution atlases of the Sun in FITS format, originally produced by Delbouille et al (1972), Kurucz et al (1972) at disk centre, Gandorfer (2000, 2002, 2005) and Stenflo (2014, 2015) close to the limb (respectively for μ = cosθ = 0.1 for Gandorfer and 0.145 for Stenflo). The ZIP file contains the FITS data (wavelength and intensity) together with derived sets of PNG spectral images of 100 Å bandwidth
Du maître de sagesse à la figure canonique : la représentation de Confucius entre le IVe siècle av. n. è. et le Ier siècle de n. è.
International audienceLa tradition lettrée chinoise présente Confucius (v. 551-479 av. n. è.) comme le maître par excellence, le désignant souvent par la simple appellation « Maître » (zi 子). Confucius revêt aussi le rôle de patriarche de la classe des lettrés-fonctionnaires, qui formait une sorte d’entité organique ayant assuré la cohésion politique, idéologique, spirituelle, culturelle et éducative de l’empire chinois pendant plus de deux millénaires. Néanmoins, de même que son enseignement fut constamment réinterprété à travers les âges, la représentation de Confucius dans la mémoire collective – loin d’être uniforme – ne cessa d’évoluer en fonction du contexte historique propre à chaque époque. La phase initiale dans la transformation du portrait du penseur se produisit durant les siècles qui précédèrent et suivirent l’avènement de l’empire en l’an 221 avant notre ère. Cette longue phase se divise en trois étapes. Dans un premier temps, plus d’un siècle après sa mort, Confucius était dépeint comme un maître qui, entouré de disciples, se mit en quête d’un souverain sage prêt à instaurer un gouvernement fondé sur la vertu. Dans un second temps, environ un siècle après la fondation impériale, le maître de sagesse fut alors décrit comme un « roi sans couronne », dont l’enseignement fut promu au rang de doctrine impériale officielle. Dans un dernier temps, aux alentours de l’ère chrétienne, une nouvelle image de Confucius se développa, avec l’instauration de son culte officiel qui s’accompagna de sa canonisation. Nous nous proposons d’examiner le processus d’évolution de la représentation de Confucius entre le IVe siècle avant notre ère et le Ier siècle de notre ère, suivant les circonstances politiques, sociales et culturelles spécifiques à chaque période. Notre analyse s’appuiera sur des données issues aussi bien de sources transmises que de sources exhumées textuelles et iconographiques, qui ont refait surface au cours des vingt dernières années
The two-step scenario of the Messinian Crisis (Clauzon et al. , 1996): a specification supported by new data
International audienceMany papers refer in a revised way to the two-step scenario of the Messinian Crisis conceived by Clauzon et al. (1996). The present paper recalls the basis for the two-step scenario and discrepancies with the later modified version, completed by new data supported by extensive micropaleontological analyses. Our interpretation of the Sicilian Eraclea Minoa section as belonging to a peripheral basin is the centre of the debate. We show the great amplitude of fluvial erosion during the peak of the crisis, which for the Rhône River, exceeded 400 km upstream of the present shoreline. Based on dinoflagellate cysts, we also recall the reasons for supporting the occurrence of three successive Lago Mare episodes of two different origins. The first and third episodes constitute phases of high sea-level exchanges between the Mediterranean and the Paratethys respectively just before the onset of paroxysm and after it. The second episode is due to overflowing Paratethyan waters from the Aegean Basin just before the end of paroxysm. Similarly, the demonstration of the marine reflooding of the Mediterranean Basin prior to the Zanclean is repeated. We emphasize dissimilarity between basins, focussing in particular on those, isolated or perched ones, which were continuously filled by waters during the desiccation phase: western part of the Alboran Sea and southeastern part of the Levantine Basin (marine waters), Apennine Foredeep (fresh waters), and Aegean Basin (brackish waters). The Apennine Foredeep cannot be the reference for the entire Mediterranean with respect to its evolution during the crisis. During the crisis, water exchanges between the Aegean Basin and the Eastern Paratethys (Dacic Basin, Black Sea) were impossible through the Marmara region because of the development of two opposed fluvial networks. Such exchanges existed thanks to a gateway that was probably located within the Balkans. Investigations around the Levantine Basin point to areas submitted to fluvial erosion during the crisis paroxysm and nearby areas, which might have received marine waters from the Red Sea. Much information is still to be discovered and that more progress is still needed in order to fully decipher this outstanding event.De nombreux articles se réfèrent opportunément mais sous une forme revisée au scénario en deux temps de la Crise messinienne de Clauzon et al. (1996). Cet article rappelle les fondements de ce scénario et les dissemblances avec les autres versions, le tout appuyé par de nouvelles données riches en analyses micropaléontologiques. Notre interprétation de la coupe d’Eraclea Minoa (Sicile) comme relevant d’un bassin périphérique est au centre du débat. Nous montrons l’ampleur de l’érosion fluviatile pendant le paroxysme de la crise qui, pour le Rhône, s’est propagée jusqu’à 400 km en amont de l’actuel littoral. Nous rappelons les arguments en faveur de l’existence de trois épisodes Lago Mare distincts chronologiquement et de nature différente mis en evidence par les kystes de dinoflagellés. Les premier et troisième épisodes résultent des phases d’échanges réciproques à haut niveau marin entre Méditerranée et Paratéthys peu avant le déclenchement du paroxysme et après celui-ci. Le second épisode est dû au déversement des eaux paratéthysiennes issues du bassin égéen peu avant la fin du paroxysme. De même, la démonstration du réennoiement du bassin méditerranéen antérieurement au Zancléen est réitérée. L’accent est mis sur la disparité entre bassins, notamment ceux qui sont restés isolés ou perchés et alimentés en eau pendant la phase de dessiccation: partie occidentale de la Mer d’Alboran et partie sud-est du basin levantin (eau marine), avant-fosse apenninique (eau douce), et basin égéen (eau saumâtre). Il est évident que le processus qu’a connu l’avant-fosse apenninique ne peut plus servir de modèle pour l’ensemble du bassin méditerranéen. Les échanges entre bassin égéen et Paratéthys orientale (basin dacique, Mer Noire) ne pouvaient s’effectuer par la région de Marmara, siège pendant la crise de deux réseaux fluviatiles de sens opposé, mais par un corridor probablement intra-balkanique. Les résultats sur le pourtour du bassin levantin laissent entrevoir des secteurs soumis à l’érosion fluviatile lors du paroxysme de la crise à côté de secteurs ayant pu bénéficier d’entrées d’eaux marines de la Mer Rouge. Il reste encore beaucoup à découvrir et à comprendre pour démystifier complètement cet événement hors normes
Control and stabilization of cascade coupled systems: application to a 1-d heat and wave coupled system
We study cascade coupled systems, for which our prototypical example is a 1-d heat equation coupled with a 1-d wave equation. The heat component is controlled through one boundary and the information is transmitted through another one to the wave component, while the wave component does not influence the heat component. Our aim is to understand the wellposedness, controllability and stabilizability properties for such a system. Establishing wellposedness is tedious using the classical energy method, which motivates us to take advantage of the cascade structure. Taking again advantage of this structure, we prove a simultaneous exact and approximate controllability result. Finally, we obtain polynomial stabilization by means of a closed-loop control defined through the solution to a Sylvester equation. These results are all discussed in an abstract LTI framework and most of our findings apply to more general situations.</div
: Panel Discussion. Beyond the Glass Ceiling: Inequalities and Transformations in Academic Work
International audienceThe panel discussion at the conference “Beyond the Glass Ceiling” examined gender inequalities in higher education and research by moving past the now well-documented diagnosis of the glass ceiling. The speakers showed that, despite the gradual feminization of academic professions, gender hierarchies are being reshaped by broader structural transformations: increased job insecurity, work intensification, the injunction to excellence, and managerial rationalization. These dynamics generate more diffuse and often invisible forms of domination, intertwined with other factors such as status, discipline, or age. The discussion also highlighted the limits of gender-equality policies focused on quantitative indicators, which can foster an elitist vision of equality by overlooking everyday inequalities. Moving beyond the glass ceiling therefore requires rethinking the gendered division of academic labor, the valuation of tasks, and systems of recognition, while questioning the very foundations of scientific work.La table ronde du colloque « Au-delà du plafond de verre » analysait les inégalités de genre dans l’enseignement supérieur et la recherche en dépassant le simple constat du plafond de verre. Les intervenant·es ont montré que, malgré la féminisation progressive des métiers académiques, les hiérarchies de genre se recomposent sous l’effet de transformations structurelles : précarisation, intensification du travail, injonction à l’excellence et management rationalisé. Ces dynamiques produisent des formes plus diffuses et souvent invisibles de domination, imbriquées à d’autres facteurs comme le statut, la discipline ou l’âge. Les discussions ont également mis en évidence les limites des politiques d’égalité centrées sur les indicateurs sexués, qui peuvent favoriser une vision élitiste de l’égalité en négligeant les inégalités ordinaires. Dépasser le plafond de verre implique ainsi de repenser en profondeur la division sexuée du travail académique, la valorisation des tâches et les rapports de reconnaissance, en réinterrogeant les fondements mêmes du travail scientifique
From one-off collaboration to embedded practices: Accounting for diversity in Small and Medium Enterprises’ university–industry collaborative research trajectories
International audienceSmall and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), despite their importance for innovation and economic growth, remain underrepresented in Open Innovation (OI) activities with universities, particularly in the form of university–industry collaborations (UIC). Prior research mainly focuses on large firms or analyzes UIC at the level of individual projects, leaving the firm-level dynamics of SMEs’ sustained engagement in collaborative research underexplored. This study adopts an evolutionary perspective to examine how SMEs initiate, structure, and institutionalize collaborative research with universities. Drawing on a longitudinal multiple-case analysis of 21 French SMEs engaged in repeated UICs. Based on 32 semi-structured interviews and 83 secondary data sources, we reconstruct firms’ engagement trajectories across multiple collaborative research initiatives. Using an inductive process approach, we identify three interrelated phases: preconditions, in which organizational transitions, sectoral needs and CEO exposure to scientific networks shape latent research orientations; formalization, characterized by the adoption of standardized collaboration instruments and explicit research roles; and institutionalization/transformation, where collaborative research becomes embedded in organizational routines, exceeding initial expectations and occasionally becoming a component of the client relationship.By shifting the focus from individual projects to firm-level trajectories, this study contributes a process model of SMEs’ sustainable engagement in UIC and offers insights for managers and policymakers seeking to foster durable collaborative research strategies
