    Flame-retardant treatment of lignocellulosic materials, resulting flame-retarded lignocellulosic materials and uses thereof

    A flame retardant treatment of a lignocellulosic material, which includes: optionally steam exploding the lignocellulosic material, impregnating the optionally steam-exploded lignocellulosic material, in or with an aqueous solution, from 0.5% to 10% of phytic acid and from 1% to 30% of urea, based on the total weight of the aqueous solution, optionally drying of the impregnated lignocellulosic material, until the impregnated lignocellulosic material has a moisture content from 5% to 20% by weight, cooking the impregnated and optionally dried lignocellulosic material, the resulting flame-retarded lignocellulosic material including a phosphorous content originating from the phytic acid from 0.1% to 10% by weight. Also, the resulting flame-retarded lignocellulosic material and the use thereof for manufacturing flame-retarded composite materials based on plant fibres, woven or nonwoven flame-retarded flexible materials based on plant fibres, and particularly textiles, flame-retarded materials based on wood fibres and/or on wood particles, and particularly flame-retarded wood panels

    Scale Factor Effects on Relative Radiometric Normalization between Multi-Resolution Images

    International audienceWhen performing relative radiometric normalization (RRN) on higher spatial resolution images using a reference image with lower spatial resolution, it is common to downsample the high-resolution (HR) target image to match the spatial resolution of the low-resolution (LR) reference image for the transfer function estimation. In this study, we downsampled HR target images by pixel aggregation using different scale factors, generated transfer functions with LR reference images, and compared the similarity between the corrected images and the reference images. We examined two commonly used RRN methods that do not require pixel pairing: moment matching (MM) and histogram matching (HM). The evaluation metrics used for the comparison included the root mean square error (RMSE), the cumulative distribution function distance (CDFD) and the structural similarity index (SSIM). We found that variations in the scale factor can impact the accuracy of the multi-resolution image RRN. There exists an optimal scale factor value that results in the corrected high-resolution image being closest to the low-resolution reference image. Moreover, this optimal value changes with different evaluation metrics. Using the optimal scale factor does not increase computational costs, but does lead to improved correction results

    Thresholds and Mechanisms of Human Magnetophosphene Perception Induced by Low Frequency Sinusoidal Magnetic Fields

    International audienceBackground: Virtually everyone is exposed to power-frequency MF (50/60 Hz), inducing in our body electric fields and currents, potentially modulating brain function. MF-induced electric fields within the central nervous system can generate flickering visual perceptions (magnetophosphenes), which form the basis of international MF exposure guidelines and recommendations protecting workers and the general public. However, magnetophosphene perception thresholds were estimated 40 years ago in a small, unreplicated study with significant uncertainties and leaving open the question of the involved interaction site.Methods: We used a stimulation modality termed transcranial alternating magnetic stimulation (tAMS), delivering in situ sinusoidal electric fields comparable to transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). Magnetophosphene perception was quantified in 81 volunteers exposed to MF (eye or occipital exposure) between 0 and 50 mT at frequencies of 20, 50, 60 and 100 Hz.Results: Reliable magnetophosphene perception was induced with tAMS without any scalp sensation, a major advantage as compared to tACS. Frequency-dependent thresholds were quantified using binary logistic regressions hence allowing to establish condition dependent probabilities of perception. Results support an interaction between induced current density and retinal rod cells.Conclusion: Beyond fundamental and immediate implications for international safety guidelines, and for identifying the interaction site underlying phosphene perception (ubiquitous in tACS experiments), our results support exploring the potential of tAMS for the differential diagnosis of retinal disorders and neuromodulation therapy

    Exploring the potential of biofiltration for mitigating harmful gaseous emissions from small or old landfills: a review

    International audienceLandfills are widely employed as the primary means of solid waste disposal. However, this practice generates landfill gas (LFG) which contains methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas, as well as various volatile organic compounds and volatile inorganic compounds. These emissions from landfills contribute to approximately 25% of the total atmospheric CH4, indicating the imperative need to valorize or treat LFG prior to its release into the atmosphere. This review first aims to outline landfills, waste disposal and valorization, conventional gas treatment techniques commonly employed for LFG treatment, such as flares and thermal oxidation. Furthermore, it explores biotechnological approaches as more technically and economically feasible alternatives for mitigating LFG emissions, especially in the case of small and aged landfills where CH4 concentrations are often below 3% v/v. Finally, this review highlights biofilters as the most suitable biotechnological solution for LFG treatment and discusses several advantages and challenges associated with their implementation in the landfill environment

    International audienceAbstract In line with EU recommendations, the potential ‘mining revival’ in France focuses on (re)opening mines. In this context, political discussions on post-mining areas have increased, driven by past mismanagements. Scientists are key in these regions, studying contamination, advising policy, and seeking solutions. Based on a case study of phytoremediation research in Saint-Laurent-Le Minier, we explore how lay and expert knowledge intersect. By examining what is hidden and by whom, we unveil research practices and stakeholder dynamics, sparking reflection on the research process while promoting a reflexive approach for researchers. We show research and its application spotlight specific topics (such as soil contamination), select, and make visible certain lay knowledge and local stakeholders and visibilises certain technological choices
