Soil Organic Carbon Turnover Following Afforestation of a Savanna Revealed by Particle-Size Fractionation and Natural 13C Measurements in Ivory Coast

No full text
International audienceSoil organic matter plays a crucial role in the global carbon cycle, yet the magnitude and direction of changes in soil carbon content following vegetation shifts in the tropics remain highly debated. Most studies have focused on short-term changes, typically spanning only a few months or years. In this study, we investigated the medium-term dynamics of organic matter at a site where savanna, protected from fire for 58 years, has gradually transitioned to woodland vegetation. Natural 13C abundance analysis combined with particle-size fractionation was used to characterize the changes in SOM over time. While carbon content remains relatively stable, δ13C exhibits a distinct shift, particularly in the surface layers, reflecting the gradual replacement of savanna-derived carbon with tree-derived carbon. All fractions were influenced by the inputs and outputs of carbon from both savanna and tree sources. In the coarse fractions, most of the carbon originates from trees; however, a significant proportion of savanna-derived carbon (ranging from 10% to 40%, depending on the fraction, depth, and patch) persists, likely in the form of black carbon. In the fine fractions, nearly half of the carbon (40% to 50%) remains derived from the savanna, highlighting the greater stability of organic matter that is physically bound to clays and protected within microaggregates

No full text

Longitudinal and Vertical Distribution of Tire & Road Wear Particles in an Urban Bioswale

No full text
International audienceTire & Road Wear Particles (TRWPs) are generated by the abrasion of tire tread in contact with the road surface. These particles are a major source of microplastics in the environment and can permanently permeate ecosystems through stormwater runoff. This is concerning because TRWPs contain various chemicals and additives, which represent a proven risk for environmental compartments receiving stormwater runoff from road surfaces. Bioswales are crucial green infrastructure for managing runoff by reducing its pollutant load. The objective of the study was to quantify and characterize the longitudinal and vertical distributions of TRWPs in the soil matrix of a bioswale. The bioswale studied is the last of a series of bioswales and receives stormwater runoff from the road as well as from preceding bioswales. Soil samples were collected from the topsoil and at different core layers in the bioswale. The samples were analyzed by pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) targeting the synthetic and natural rubbers constituting the tires. The results indicate high levels of TRWP contamination for the soil near the road. A decreasing contamination profile between the inlet and outlet for the soils located in the heart of the bioswale is highlighted, which suggests a preferential zone of input and accumulation at the inlet. In the core layers, we found tire and road wear concentration decreasing with increasing soil depth. The present work aims at contributing to present literature on bioswale performance and towards informing the best management practices of such infiltration-based systems

Un cas d’encéphalite limbique féline

No full text
International audienceA 4.5-year-old neutered male cat was presented with recurrent manifestations suggesting focal seizures associated with behavioral changes. MRI of the brain, analysis of cerebrospinal fluid, and electroencephalographic examination were suggestive of limbic encephalitis, although they could not confirm it with certainty. Limbic encephalitis was definitively confirmed through post-mortem histopathological examination combined with specific serum testing for anti-LGI1 antibodies. Feline limbic encephalitis with anti-LGI1 (EL-LGI1) is a form of autoimmune encephalitis recently recognized in cats, possibly caused by antibodies targeting the LGI1 protein. Similar to its human form, EL-LGI1 in cats manifests as focal seizures, often accompanied by oro-facial automatisms and behavioral changes such as aggression. The diagnosis relies on the detection of anti-LGI1 antibodies, although this test is not routinely available in veterinary medicine, especially in France. This case illustrates a typical example of limbic encephalitis for which a definitive diagnosis was established post-mortem and highlights the challenges of pre-mortem diagnosis.

Whistleblowing as a Recursive Sequence of Épreuves: A Boltanskian Theorization of Speaking Up

No full text
International audienceAbstract This paper presents a novel theoretical framework for understanding whistleblowing as a dynamic and recursive sequence of épreuves (tests), drawing on Luc Boltanski’s sociology of critique. Traditionally, whistleblowing research has focused on either the whistleblower’s experience or the organizational response, often treating these aspects in isolation. This study bridges these perspectives by conceptualizing whistleblowing as a co-constructed process in which the actions of whistleblowers and organizations shape and reshape each other. Central to this framework are three types of épreuves —ethical, responsive, and societal—which represent critical junctures in the whistleblowing journey. These tests determine the perceived legitimacy of the organization and their response and fuel the persistence of the whistleblower’s critique. By framing whistleblowing as a recursive process, this paper highlights how each interaction between whistleblower and organization can alter the course of events, leading to varying outcomes. The recursive model captures the complex, iterative nature of whistleblowing and offers insights into why some whistleblowing cases persist or escalate, while others are resolved or silenced. This perspective enriches our understanding of whistleblowing dynamics and provides practical implications for fostering more responsive organizational cultures and managing whistleblowing disclosures effectively

Transcultural adaptation of the bath CRPS body perception disturbance scale into French

No full text
International audienceBody perception disturbances are a typical symptom among people with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). To assess it, the Bath CRPS Body Perception Disturbance Scale (B-BPDS) is a comprehensive tool which was validated in English and translated/validated in German and Japanese. To date, no French version was available. We translated the B-BPDS in French using the forward-backward method to obtain a French version (B-BPDS-F). Then, we examined its internal consistency, concurrent validity and structural validity. 32 participants were included for the first evaluation and 21 for the second. Internal consistency of the B-BPDS-F was adequate after removing item 3 on attention. B-BPDS-F was significantly correlated with pain at rest, quality of life total score and anxiety/depression dimensions. Exploratory Factor Analysis showed 2 main factors which explain 63 and 31% of the total variance. ICC was found acceptable. Our results are in line with previous work and provide a valid measurement tool in French

How do heavy metal fans defend their taste regime? Insights from teenage fans in the French cultural context

No full text
International audienceIn the French assimilationist cultural setting, heavy metal (HM) culture and associated consumption activities are the target of negative social labelling by institutional and social actors who consider it a contested or even an illegitimate taste. This labelling affects HM fans, many of whom are teenagers who are in the taste-building phase, in different social settings. We used ethnographic research to study adolescent and post-teenage HM fans in France. This helped us find different types of negative labels attached to HM on a day-to-day basis. We also developed a taxonomy of adolescents’ response strategies to defend their taste and defuse the labelling tensions surrounding it. We conclude by examining the theoretical and managerial implications of the symbolic dimension of HM taste-related consumption practices
