This thesis focuses on the stabilization of interface transmission problems involving wave-plate equations and Euler-Bernoulli beam/wave models with dynamical boundary controls, using semigroup theory and numerical analysis. First, we investigate a two-dimensional transmission model consisting of a wave equation and a Kirchhoff plate equation, coupled through transmission conditions along a steady interface and controlled by three dynamical boundary controls under geometric conditions. While the system lacks exponential stability, we establish a polynomial energy decay estimate of type for smooth initial data using a frequency domain approach which combines a contradiction argument with the multiplier technique. This method leads to particular geometric conditions on the wave's and the plate's domains. Next, we extend these results to a wave-plate model with only two dynamical boundary controls instead of the conventional three. Our analysis confirms that this reduction does not affect the polynomial energy decay rate, which remains of order This method also imposes particular geometric conditions on the domain. Finally, we investigate the numerical solution of a one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli beam/wave transmission problem with dynamical boundary controls. The coupling occurs through boundary connections, where the wave and beam equations evolve across adjacent intervals. Using the Finite Volume Method, we derive stability estimates and prove the convergence of the numerical solution to the weak solution of the continuous system. Additionally, we present a numerical experiment to validate the theoretical study, particularly concerning the decay rate of the solution under the influence of a single dynamical boundary control.

Canine-assisted intervention is a growing practice that must now respond to increasing demand, particularly from healthcare settings such as retirement homes and hospitals. Its documented benefits have led the Institut Curie to initiate an innovative project: the adoption of a shelter dog to work full-time in the hospital. This animal has been fully integrated into the healthcare team. It soothes and distracts patients, but also improves the daily life of hospital staff. Distinct from traditional therapy dogs, Snoopy is designated as a "auxiliary care dog". This thesis aims to inform, define, and communicate the implementation of this project: from the dog's adoption from a shelter to its daily interactions at patients' bedsides, including its training, the development of a comprehensive health protocol ensuring compliance with hospital hygiene standards, and the assessment of the animal's welfare. The first part of this work reviews the development of canine-assisted practices in society and presents the conceptual foundations of the Institut Curie's project. The second part proposes a sanitary protocol for the auxiliary care dog, encompassing vaccination schedules, antiparasitic treatments, allergen risk management among vulnerable patients, and the establishment of daily hygiene measures. Finally, in view of the current lack of regulatory frameworks of this practice, this thesis formulates recommendations to harmonize practices and to ensure appropriate oversight. The respect for animal welfare cannot be dissociated from this project. Potential welfare risk factors have been identified, and remedial measures are suggested. The ultimate goal is to produce a best practice guide to improve the well-being of auxiliary care dogs involved in clinical environments and to advance legislation.
Ultrasound stimulation of bone cells: 3D finite-element model of acoustic streaming around osteocytes
International audienceIntroductionUltrasound (US) stimulation of bone remodeling remains an open question as the underlyingmechanisms involved are still poorly understood. Among the possible hypotheses, thepropagation of ultrasonic waves (US) in bone tissue could generate acoustic streaming (AS)resulting in fluid shear stress exerted on the wall of osteocytes known as the mechanosensitiveconductors of bone remodeling. Osteocytes are dendritic cells surrounded by a viscouspericellular fluid (PCF), ubiquituous in the bone extra-cellular matrix (ECM) forming acomplex micrometric 3D network called the lacuno-canalicular network (LCN).This paper investigates the interaction of US with the osteocyte dendrite (OD) confinedin a canaliculus, as it is considered as the most mechanosensitive part of the cell. The aimis to explore the relevance of taking into account the irregular 3D shapes of the canaliculusand dendrite in terms of mechanical sollicitations induced by US stimulation.Material & Methods∗Speakersciencesconf.org:esmc2025:592919From images (FIB-SEM imaging ”slice and view” in BSE mode (Gianuzzi 2004), FEI HeliosNanoLab 660, pixel size 16.78 × 16.78 × 20 nm3), a realistic 3D geometry of a canaliculus ofrabbit cortical bone is reconstructed and implemented in the Finite-Element software ComsolMultiphysics (v. 6.2). The geometry of the dendrite inside the canaliculus (not accessibleby imaging) is deduced from the canaliculus wall geometry. The acoustic properties of the cell dendrite and of the PCF are similar to those of water, except that the viscosity of the PCF is supposed to be 10 times higher than water dynamicviscosity (μwater=0.65.10-3 Pa.s).To mimic the US stimulation od bone cells inside the LCN, a first order oscillating velocityU1 is imposed along the ECM/PCF interface under the form of a harmonic acousticwave at frequency f of 1 MHz with an amplitude of displacement d0 propagating in the USpropagation direction: U1(f) = i2πfd0ex.The acoustic streaming is a second-order (non-linear) acoustic effect which results in a steadyflow. In order to investigate the acoustic streaming induced by US stimulation inside thePCF, we need to solve the second-order Navier-Stokes equations obtained by the perturbationmethod. In Comsol Multiphysics, the Thermoviscous Acoustics module (in frequency domain) is usedto resolve the first order acoustic field which provides the source term for the second orderequation implemented in the Laminar Flow module. From the acoustic streaming velocity (time-averaged second-order term) thus obtained, theresulting wall shear stress (WSS) applied at the PCF/process interface is calculated. Results & DiscussionThe WSS is plotted along the interface PCF/OD. The values are compared to those obtainedfor idealized 3D-geometries (annular tube) deduced from the realistic one and to theresults obtained in 2D cross-sections as previously presented in (Baron 2023).We investigate how canaliculus and dendrite geometries could have an influence on theUS-induced PCF flow. Finally, the quantification of the WSS induced by acoustic streamingis questioned in regard of stress levels that can trigger a biological response (Weinbaum 1994).Keywords: acoustic streaming; wall shear stress, osteocyte; mechanotransduction; FEmodel; FIB-SEM.Aknowledgements: This work was supported by the French National Research Agency,ANR-23-CE51-0018 and ANR-22-CE51-0038.ReferencesBaron C, Doveri E, Jodlowski P., Lasaygues P, Guivier-Curien C. Machine learning to detect recent recreational drug use in intensive cardiac care units
International audienceBackground: Although recreational drug use is a strong risk factor for acute cardiovascular events, systematic testing is currently not performed in patients admitted to intensive cardiac care units, with a risk of underdetection. To address this issue, machine learning methods could assist in the detection of recreational drug use.Aims: To investigate the accuracy of a machine learning model using clinical, biological and echocardiographic data for detecting recreational drug use in patients admitted to intensive cardiac care units. Methods: From 07 to 22 April 2021, systematic screening for all traditional recreational drugs (cannabis, opioids, cocaine, amphetamines, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) was performed by urinary testing in all consecutive patients admitted to intensive cardiac care units in 39 French centres. The primary outcome was recreational drug detection by urinary testing. The framework involved automated variable selection by eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and model building with multiple algorithms, using 31 centres as the derivation cohort and eight other centres as the validation cohort. Results: Among the 1499 patients undergoing urinary testing for drugs (mean age 63±15 years; 70% male), 161 (11%) tested positive (cannabis: 9.1%; opioids: 2.1%; cocaine: 1.7%; amphetamines: 0.7%; 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine: 0.6%). Of these, only 57% had reported drug use. Using nine variables, the best machine learning model (random forest) showed good performance in the derivation cohort (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve=0.82) and in the validation cohort (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve=0.76).Conclusions: In a large intensive cardiac care unit cohort, a comprehensive machine learning model exhibited good performance in detecting recreational drug use, and provided valuable insights into the relationships between clinical variables and drug use through explainable machine learning techniques
Traitement de l’erreur et inégalités. Quels « traits » pour analyser les pratiques enseignantes ?
International audienceIn this paper, we examine the practices of two French primary school teachers: Camille (with pupils aged 4-6) and Anne (with pupils aged 9-10). Assuming that these teaching practices could help to limit or even reduce inequalities at school, we analyse them through the prism of various 'features' relating to the handling of the error(s) we observed in their respective classes.
A conversation on housing under platform capitalism: The contentious regulation of short-term rentals in European cities
International audienceOver the course of a decade, short-term rental (STR) platforms (such as Airbnb, Booking, VRBO, etc.) and STR operators have significantly transformed the political economy of cities and housing in many localities worldwide. Our recently published book "Housing under Platform Capitalism. The Contentious Regulation of Short-Term Rentals in European Cities" explains how and why, faced with a sharp rise in STRs driven by a handful of multinational corporations, European local and national governments have developed starkly different regulatory approaches. It also studies the consequences of those regulations for urban and multi-level governance, politics and housing markets. We are grateful to the editors of P and S as well as to Emanuele Sciuva, Mara Ferreri and Gianluca Bei for offering us the opportunity to discuss our book in dialogue with their research, and ongoing debates about the politics and political economy of (urban) platforms
