Digitizing global supply chains through blockchain
International audienceThe objective of this paper is to understand the industry perspective towards the benefits of embedding blockchain technology (BCT) in global supply chains (GSC). A qualitative approach with the view of transaction cost economics (TCE) and diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory is applied. Semi-structured interviews with 23 industry experts showcased the benefits of application of BCT into GSC and this yielded interesting themes and sub-themes using the thematic analyses first yielding, the critical issues and challenges in traditional supply chains (TSC) and second, how BCT can contribute to overcome these challenges to support digital GSC; and third, possible challenges adapting BCT. This study advances the supply chain decision making complemented with elements of TCE and DOI theory through the application of BCT. GSC managers can deploy BCT integrated with the Internet of Things to effectively meet worldwide supply chain demands and complex situations.<br /
International market exposure to sovereign ESG
International audienceWe quantify equity and bond market sensitivity to sovereign ESG scores and their variations which, theoretically, is equivalent to evaluating the demand for ESG at the global scale. We do so by estimating a longitudinal model, at the issue level, that captures exposures to sovereign ESG factors for both equity and fixed income indices. In spite of the surging interest in ESG investing, our results do not support a strong impact of ESG factors on the returns of international markets, implying that the demand for ESG at the country level is not a significant driver of prices. Nevertheless, we document a strong association between GDP growth and ESG scores at the country level.<br /

Sentiments du marché financier et apprentissage automatique
Since the first mention of the term “animal spirits” by Keynes (1936), a pervasive body of literature aims at understanding the impact of market participants’ sentiments on their decision-making in financial markets’ zoo. These sentiments, which include people’s reactions to news, apprehensions, and anticipations, have been extensively examined in more recent studies related to financial markets (e.g., French, 1986; Barberis et al., 1998; Baker and Wurgler, 2004, 2006; Hirshleifer et al., 2006; Baker and Wurgler, 2007; Da et al., 2015; Obaid and Pukthuanthong, 2022).The challenge of identifying sentiment lies in its unobserved nature. Traditionally, economists rely on consumers and business surveys to gauge sentiments by querying respondents about their perceptions of current and future economic conditions. However, advancements in Machine Learning and big data have facilitated sentiment measurement through alternative sources such as text, audio, and visual data (see Algaba et al., 2020). These techniques offer novel opportunities to measure sentiment and address long-standing questions about its role in financial markets. This thesis, comprising four Chapters, explores this intersection by examining how sentiments, interpreted through advanced computational methods, influence and predict market behaviours across various scenarios and time periods. Subsequently, the thesis argues this topic from different perspectives within financial studies.Chapter 1 explores the causal relationship between financial market sentiment, systemic risk, disease spread, and their implications for real economic growth, given the established predictive power of market sentiments on economic downturns. Employing the so-called Sparse Principal Component Analysis, we develop a Modified and Augmented TArgeted and Sparse SYstemic Risk Index (MATASSYRI), serving as a comprehensive systemic risk meta-measure which aggregates various individual and composite systemic risk measures, with a focus on the pandemic period.Chapter 2 investigates the relationship between price discovery and commodity-related media sentiment in the futures market through a tone-based Natural Language Processing (NLP) study, leveraging news articles, research publications, journals, and reviews. Utilizing the BERT-BiLSTM-Attention model, we integrate comprehensive semantic information from the entire texts, encompassing both upstream and downstream factors.Following the investigations in the previous Chapters, the Chapter 3 integrates operational research and financial analysis to examine the interdependencies between commodity-related media sentiments and the prices’ behaviour in the Chinese futures market. Spanning from January 2018 to May 2023, we systematically aggregate and analyse daily sentiment data sourced from a diverse array of media outlets. By employing the pre-trained Robustly-optimized Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers approach (RoBERTa), our operational research methodology enhances traditional sentiment scoring techniques, facilitating a comprehensive assimilation of semantic data that encompasses both influential and consequential market factors. The Chapter 4, following previous Chapters, conducts a comprehensive reassessment of the conditional relationship between investor sentiment and financial returns, measured respectively by the S&P 500 sentiment index compiled by the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) and the corresponding daily S&P 500 stock index returns. In summary, this thesis weaves a cohesive narrative underscoring the pivotal role of market sentiments in financial analysis and prediction. By integrating cutting-edge Machine Learning methodologies, this thesis contributes to the literature by advancing academic understanding and also providing practical tools for market strategists and practitioners.
National audienceWhat shadows lie behind the promise of digital technology to make agri-food systems fully sustainable? Looking at digital transformativeness through the lens of the concept of transformative power, we highlight four of them: spillovers, situated power, linkages and individualities. The responsible approach to innovation allows us to examine each of these and their dynamics. We use this conceptual framework to introduce the papers in this special issue.
Slow down investigations to self-report
The introduction of a leniency program may encourage multi-product firms involved in price cartels on several markets to adopt a decentralized organization. This slows down antitrust investigations. The discovery of another cartel in the course of an investigation into a first cartel is thus postponed. This delay gives firms more time to apply for leniency for other cartels not yet discovered. A decentralized organization thus enables a greater reduction in fines to be obtained when firms wish to benefit from the leniency program. It does, however, have the disadvantage of introducing intra-firm competition and reducing collusion prices. A leniency program can therefore have a marginal deterrent effect by modifying firms' internal organization, thereby reducing collusion prices. A larger fine reduction can reinforce this marginal deterrent effect. However, it can also produce an anti-competitive effect by enabling the formation of new cartels.</div
How subsidiaries differ in IT-enabled supply chain integration : The role of multinational firms’ cultural and geographical distance
International audienceInformation technology (IT) coordination with supply chain (SC) partners improves customer and supplier integration. However, little research integrates multinational firms' cultural and geographical distance with subsidiaries' SC practice even as subsidiaries increasingly face problems engaging with their parent firms due to institutional pressures and poor SC integration. This study investigates the moderating roles of cultural and geographical distance between parent firms and subsidiaries on the relationship between subsidiaries' IT coordination with SC partners and customer and supplier integration. Three data sources were utilized to test the hypotheses. Survey data were collected from multinational firms in the retail industry across a variety of countries. Hofstede's national culture index was used to measure cultural distance, and Google Maps data were used to calculate geographical distance. We conducted structural equation modelling and hierarchical regression analysis to test the varying effects. The results indicate that when subsidiaries have higher cultural and geographical distance from their parent firms, the positive effects of IT coordination on customer and supplier integration of subsidiaries are weaker. Understanding the roles of cultural and geographical distance is important for both parent firms and subsidiaries to facilitate IT-enabled SC integration and to select the geographical locations of subsidiaries.<br/
