How and Why Does Corporate Reputation Moderate Mass Media News’ Impact On Market Value?
International audience"In this study, we investigate whether corporate reputation reduces or amplifies mass media news’ impact on market value. We conceptualize reputation as comprising a prior knowledge, prominence, and favorability component. Additionally, we theorize about its role in moderating news’ effect on market value. Using 11 semesters’ data from 38 publicly listed German companies, we offer evidence of corporate reputation amplifying both negative and positive mass media news’ impact on market value. We further find that positive media mentions could reduce negative mentions’ negative impact up to the point that it loses its significance. Finally, our empirical analysis suggests that reputation’s moderating effect is mostly due to the favorability mechanism. Our results contribute to the literature by empirically assessing the role that reputation’s multiple dimensions play in shaping investors’ response to positive and negative mass media news. Our results also show that ensuring the media’s positive coverage of the company is an effective strategy to mitigate bursts of negative news’ negative consequences."<br/
To commercialize inside or outside of the firm : Behavioral considerations in patent exploitation by family firms
International audienceResearch SummaryThis article examines the relationship between family ownership and patent use strategy using primary data from a patent survey, as well as patent and firm-level data from secondary sources. The findings reveal that family firms are less likely than non-family firms to license their patents and more likely to internally commercialize them. We show that the decision of family firms to license less does not depend on lower patent quality or inefficient patent use. Instead, it arises from their preference for patent uses that allow them to exert greater control over the value they can derive from their innovations. We also show that family firms commercialize more patents because they leverage their managerial discretion to explore and seize emerging internal patent commercialization opportunities.Managerial SummaryWhether the desire of families in family firms to maintain control over the company and strategic resources negatively impacts their economic performance has important governance implications. Within the context of patent commercialization, in line with this desire for control, our study highlights the preference of family firms to prioritize internal commercialization over licensing. To offset their underlicensing tendency, family firms internally commercialize more patents by being nimble to identify and capitalize on emerging commercialization opportunities. This enables them to align their control ambitions with patent commercialization efficiency, akin to nonfamily firms.<br/
Value Co-creation in Sports Live Streaming Platforms : A Microfoundations Perspective
International audienceAs a primarily synchronous social media form, social live streaming services offer real-time interaction between streamers and viewers, and among viewers. Users' value cocreation has become increasingly crucial for platform businesses to increase their competitive advantage. However, the previous studies using the microfoundations approach have only confirmed the employees' efforts to adopt technology as a way to achieve the firms' goals. In this article, we explore the microfoundations of external actors' (viewers and streamers) value cocreation on sports live streaming platforms (SLSPs). Taking China Sport as a case study, this article conducts netnography research with observations made of four live-streamed matches on the final matchday of the International Table Tennis Federation World Tour Grand Final 2019. In total, 16 204 real-time messages and 5540 gifting messages are reviewed. In-depth interviews are also conducted with 5 streamers and 15 viewers. As a result, a typology of viewers (managers, fans, and audiences) emerges, and five viewer–streamer–viewer value cocreation activities are revealed. Furthermore, the unique value-in-use among streamers and viewers in different activities is found. This study presents a model to show that the viewers' engagement and the value cocreation activities between viewers and streamers at a microlevel determines the value-in-use formation, which, in turn, contributes to the competitive advantages for SLSPs at a macrolevel. This study contributes to the existing literature on the engagement behavior and value cocreation by empirically examining the role of external actors' engagement as the microfoundations of value cocreation in the context of new social technologies—SLSPs.<br /
Restor(y)ing commitment to a failing organization: how narratives and forecasts mitigate anxiety
International audienceThis research interrogates how the construction of narratives and accounting forecasts contributes to managing the emotional state of actors involved in reporting meetings by promoting discourses of hope in their organization's future, mitigating their anxiety. This study shows how narratives are built from multiple antenarratives and accounting forecasts, which restore and strengthen organizational actors' commitment to their organizations. This study contributes to a better understanding of the role played by narratives and accounting documents in mitigating organizational members' anxiety.Over eight months, an interventionist research design method gave one of the authors the opportunity to record discussions held during reporting meetings in a business incubator. These recordings captured the production of narratives and forecasts in these meetings. This study shows how the production of multiple antenarratives and accounting forecasts helps organizational actors who attend reporting meetings mitigate the anxiety triggered by disappointing performance figures and restore collective discourses full of hope for the organization's future. This case highlights how personal antenarratives and successive versions of accounting forecasts contribute to restoring a collective commitment to a failing organization. This study refines current understanding of the under-explored links between accounting forecasts, narratives and anxiety management. The study provides insight into how accounting practices contribute to the production of narratives that successfully restore organizational members' commitment to working for a failing organization. The study also exemplifies the original insights gained from interventionist research protocols
Digital servitization in digital enterprise: Leveraging digital platform capabilities to unlock data value
International audienceExisting research has not clearly defined digital platform capabilities or explained how they unlock data value, limiting the understanding of digital servitization in digital enterprises. Therefore, our study draws upon the Dynamic Capability Theory and employs an exploratory, in-depth single case study approach to bridge this research gap. We identify three key digital platform capabilities: data integration capability, data analytics capability, and data productization capability. Our results demonstrate that these capabilities function as “reservoirs,” “catalysts,” and “pipelines” in a specific iterative sequence to unlock data value, thereby facilitating the successful implementation of digital servitization in digital enterprises. Furthermore, these capabilities are interconnected, collectively forming a dynamic capability—digital platform capability—that unlocks data value by integrating and reconfiguring data resources. Additionally, we delineate the differences in digital servitization between digital enterprises and traditional manufacturers across three dimensions: motivation, key service design activities, and benefits. Our findings enrich the existing literature on digital platform capabilities and data value while expanding the research scope of digital servitization from the perspective of digital enterprises
Deep learning applications in operations research
International audienceData science emerges as an inter-disciplinary field, employs scientific methods and algorithms to extract useful insights, and generate value from large datasets, benefiting individuals, firms, and society. In the big data-driven era, traditional data science is undergoing a significant transformation due to the emergence of deep learning. Deep learning, a specialized category of machine learning (ML) algorithms uses multiple layers to uncover hidden patterns, and valuable insights from the big datasets. Deep learning models have gained popularity these days due to their ability to provide superior predictive performance compared to traditional ML models, particularly when trained on large datasets (Kraus et al., 2020)

Convention Theory in Management Sciences
International audienceThis chapter presents the development of convention theory in management sciences since the 1990s. The first part explains the reasons for and sources of inspiration of this current of research. It shows the bifurcation between management and economics research made possible by the recognition of the mimetic dimension of individual rationality. The second part describes the structural model of conventions, which identifies conventions as “information screens” and proposes a systematic description of their content. In particular, this structuralist model makes it possible to analyze the dynamics of conventions, i.e., their transformation over time. The third part presents two major developments in convention theory in management sciences: on the one hand, the effort conventions that govern activity in organizations and the adjustment between workers to implicit norms of “normal” effort and on the other hand, the qualification conventions that govern relations between the organization and its environment (including markets) and determine who is in charge of defining the level of quality in a transaction. The articulation of these two conventions has renewed our understanding of managerial decisions, although promising work remains to be done.<br/
