Do Grades Have Absolute Meaning ? An Experiment on Majority Judgment

    No full text
Whether in education, performance reviews, or elections, grades serve as tools for assessment, yet the universality of their meanings remains an open question. Whenvoting under majority judgment, voters assign verbal grades such as “excellent, very good, good, fairly good, acceptable, insufficient, to reject” to each candidate. Themeaning of these grades should be clear and consistent across all voters. Balinski and Laraki (2011) describe this as a “common language” and claim that the grade labels convey absolute meaning. This paper tests the assumption of absolute meaning by examining whether the meaningofagradedependsonthegradingscale(i.e., framing effect) in a political context. We conducted an online experiment (N=1,955) in which participants voted for candidates to the French presidential elections under majority judgment withgrading scales with different numbers of grades. Our findings indicate that the grade distributions obtained by candidates are significantly influenced by the grading scales available to voters. Our data therefore rejects the assertion that grades convey absolute meaning, showing instead that their interpretation depends on the number of grades available

The Groupfeel syndrome: a theory of a counterproductive group emotion

    No full text
Groups often display shared emotional climates that shape collective behavior and decision-making. While emotional contagion and groupthink have been extensively studied, less is known about how high-intensity and normatively regulated group emotions can become counterproductive. This paper introduces the concept of the Groupfeel syndrome—a dysfunctional group-level emotional dynamic characterized by intense shared emotions, pressure to maintain emotional positivity, and the absence of emotionally intelligent regulation. Drawing on two revelatory qualitative cases—a former member of a closed spiritual community and a former financial trader operating in a high-pressure market environment—I identify three antecedent conditions that foster this syndrome and propose eight testable hypotheses. Groupfeel impairs critical thinking, suppresses dissent, and biases collective decision-making by locking groups into rigid affective trajectories. Grounded in psychological and organizational literature and supported by qualitative data from contrasted high-stakes contexts, the model integrates mechanisms of emotional contagion, normative emotion regulation, and social conformity. This conceptual development paper advances research on group emotion by specifying when shared affect shifts from a resource to a liability and outlines implications for organizational behavior, leadership, and future empirical testing

    No full text

Voting with Partial Orders: The Plurality and Anti-Plurality Classes

    No full text
In the theory of voting, the Plurality rule for preferences that come in the form of linear orders selects the alternatives most frequently appearing in the first position of those orders, while the Anti-Plurality rule selects the alternatives least often occurring in the final position. We explore extensions of these rules to preferences that are partial orders, offering axiomatic characterisations for them

Examination of risks in circular supply chains using transition management lens: towards a circular economy in emerging markets

    No full text
International audienceWe perform a multidimensional and integrated investigation of risks associated with circular supply chains (CSC), drawing on Transition Management Theory (TMT). This research focuses on e-waste from the Indian electronics industry, a waste stream with significant recovery potential and one of the fastest-growing in emerging economies. Drawing on TMT, the study (i) institutionalises risk management activities in circular systems to operationalise the transition towards CE; (ii) quantifies CSC risks at operational, tactical, and strategic levels and measure the total risk exposure of CSCs; (iii) comprehensively cogitates the operational, socio-environmental, and financial implications of CSCs risks and (iv) considers uncertainty in operations research (OR) models by applying a fuzzy set theory, evidential reasoning algorithm, and expected utility theory based model to evaluate and profile the CSCs risks. The proposed model contributes to the application of decision analysis and risk analysis approaches in the sustainability domain and can efficiently model uncertain, subjective, and incomplete data. Our findings reveal that customers' reluctance to purchase reprocessed products represents the most critical challenge to the effectiveness of CSCs. Furthermore, contrary to conventional perspectives, organizations are strategically shifting toward adopting circular practices. However, they often lack the practical means and resources to implement these strategies effectively

    No full text

The reproduction of structural inequalities in online job search strategies and outcomes

    No full text
International audienceDoes digital stratification foster inequalities in access to work and employment? We address this question by examining inequalities related to online job search skills and the outcomes of the online search process. Results from a representative survey of 1103 Spanish jobseekers show that online job search skills positively affect the chances of getting an interview through employment platforms but that they are unevenly distributed. Online job search skills are more important than other digital resources, including basic digital skills, in determining positive outcomes of online job searches though there are still inequalities in getting an interview independent of either. This calls for considering domain-specific digital skills both in research and in practice alongside tackling traditional inequalities. <br /

Enhancing Transparency and Replicability in Entrepreneurship Research with Preregistrations, Registered Reports, and Registered Revisions: A Call for Papers

    No full text
International audienceEntrepreneurship Theory and Practice ( ETP ) is committed to advancing transparency, replicability, credibility, and rigor in research. To support this commitment, we encourage authors to preregister their research plans, submit empirical studies as Registered Reports, and engage with our evolving editorial processes, such as Registered Revisions. Drawing on practices across multiple disciplines, we offer guidance for integrating these publication formats into our field. We also provide multiple resources to support authors in adopting these approaches and to address the unique challenges of applying such formats to, for example, secondary data. By more widely embracing the Registered Report approach, we envision a future for entrepreneurship research that is characterized by greater credibility, replicability, transparency, and scientific impact. In this editorial, we motivate and, hopefully, guide future work by making a specific call for manuscripts for a virtual special issue of ETP focused on Registered Reports, strengthening ETP ’s longstanding commitment to methodological innovation. We offer a prospective vision—what we believe would be good for future literature—and our aim is to empower scholars to proactively shape new theoretical and empirical foundations in entrepreneurship research that enhance the credibility and replicability of entrepreneurship research

Reconsidering mistakes: reproduction and replication of Nielsen and Rehbeck (2022)

    No full text
There is a long-standing debate as to whether violations of rational choice axioms reflect normative deviations from the theory or simply mistakes. We contribute to this debate by reproducing and replicating Nielsen and Rehbeck's (2022) experimental study, with a new focus on heterogeneity across axioms. We conduct a three-part analysis comprising a direct computational reproduction, a robustness reproduction, and a high-powered preregistered replication (N = 451) focusing on the Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA). We find robust evidence that individuals express a desire to follow canonical axioms, but perceive violations as mistakes only for a subset of them-specifically, IIA and Transitivity. In contrast, we find no evidence that violations of Independence, First-Order Stochastic Dominance, Branching, or Consistency are perceived as mistakes. We discuss these findings through the lens of cognitive complexity, suggesting that individuals may fail to recognize violations of more demanding axioms even when prompted
