International audienceContext. Water vapour is delivered to Saturn's stratosphere by Enceladus' plumes and subsequent diffusion in the planet system. It is expected to condense into a haze in the middle stratosphere. The hot stratospheric vortex (the 'beacon') that formed as an aftermath of Saturn's Great Storm of 2010 significantly altered the temperature, composition, and circulation in Saturn's northern stratosphere. Previous photochemical models suggested haze sublimation and vertical winds as processes likely to increase the water vapour column density in the beacon. Aims. We aim to quantify the temporal evolution of stratospheric water vapour in the beacon during the storm. Methods. We mapped Saturn at 66.44 and 67.09 µm on seven occasions from July 2011 to February 2013 with the PACS instrument of the Herschel Space Observatory (Herschel is an ESA space observatory with science instruments provided by European-led Principal Investigator consortia and with important participation from NASA). The observations probe the millibar levels, at which the water condensation region was altered by the warmer temperatures in the beacon. Using radiative transfer modelling, we tested several empirical and physically based models to constrain the cause of the enhanced water emission found in the beacon.Results. The observations show an increased emission in the beacon that cannot be reproduced only accounting for the warmer temperatures reported in the beacon. An additional source of water vapour is thus needed. We find a factor (7.5±1.6) increase in the water column in the beacon compared to pre-storm conditions using empirical models. Combining our results with a cloud formation model for July 2011, we evaluate the sublimation contribution to 45-85% of the extra column derived from the water emission increase in the beacon. Conclusions. The observations confirm that the storm conditions enhanced the water abundance at the millibar levels because of haze sublimation and vertical winds in the beacon. Future work on the haze temporal evolution during the storm will help to better constrain the sublimation contribution over time

International audienceThis article focuses on literary reading as a means of understanding the law. In schools, discussions about sexual violence have led to the creation of a handbook for all professionals in the French education system, with suggestions for activities based on children's literature: Petit Doux n'a pas peur by Marie Wabbes (for pupils aged 3 to 5) and Mô Namour by Claude Ponti (for pupils aged 8 to 10). How do teachers actually use these works? How do they use them to raise awareness of the law? Do they engage their pupils in literary reading? We invited a dozen teachers to an interview to find out about their reading texts and observed how they were used in class. The results show that while the school's proposals are geared towards moral and civic education and the law, the teachers themselves rely on literary reading approaches, while setting themselves the goal of teaching the law. This teaching of the law proves to be effective in the class observed.

High energy emission powered by accreting companions of Be/γCas stars

International audienceThe origin of the hard, bright X-ray emission that defines the gamma Cas analog class of Be stars remains an outstanding question in Be star literature. This work explores the possibility that the X-ray flux is produced by accretion onto a white dwarf companion. We use three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations to model the prototype gamma Cas system assuming a white dwarf companion and investigate the accretion of the circumstellar material by the secondary star. We contrast these results to a model for 59 Cyg, a non-gamma Cas Be star system with a stripped companion. We find that the secondary stars in both systems form disk-like accretion structures with Keplerian characteristics, similar to those seen in the Be decretion disks. We also find that white dwarf accretion can produce X-ray fluxes that are consistent with the observed values for gamma Cas, while the predicted X-ray luminosities are significantly lower for the non-degenerate companion in 59 Cyg. In addition, using the three-dimensional radiative transfer code, HDUST, we find that these models produce H-alpha emission consistent with the observations for both gamma Cas and 59 Cyg, and that the predicted polarization degrees across optical and UV wavelengths are at detectable levels. Finally, we discuss the impact that future UV spectropolarimetry missions could have on our understanding of these systems

This article explores the contribution of oral archives to the analysis of collective memories through a case study of Secretary General Pierre Laurent, who served at the French Ministry of National Education from 1963 to 1968. It pursues two objectives. First, it demonstrates how, at the turn of the 1990s, the memory of key individuals influenced the perception of the history of administration and educational policies of the 1960s, as well as the writing of that history. It thus raises the question of the role of witnesses in the writing of contemporary history. Moreover, it examines the effects of sedimentation, circulation, and sometimes circularity between witnesses and historians, based on oral archives collected by the Service d’histoire de l’éducation. Second, it highlights how graduates of the École nationale d’administration (Énarques) have constructed, through the figure of Secretary General Pierre Laurent, a collective professional memory that is continuously reactivated, legitimising their increasingly dominant role within the ministry.L’article a pour objet l’apport des archives orales dans l’analyse des mémoires collectives à partir d’une étude de cas sur le secrétaire général Pierre Laurent en poste au ministère de l’Éducation nationale de 1963 à 1968.

European mammal turnover driven by a global rapid warming event preceding the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum

    No full text
International audienceA brief global warming event known as the Pre-Onset Excursion (POE) occurred just before the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, 56 Mya). The deconvolution of the evolutionary consequences of these two hyperthermal events is puzzling because of their close temporal proximity and the lack of comprehensive, well-calibrated paleontological records, especially in terrestrial environments. As a consequence, the impact of the POE on mammalian evolution and its role in shaping PETM faunas remains unclear. Here, we report from France a mammalian fauna, named Albas, which is interpreted to postdate the POE and predate the PETM. The absence of artiodactyls, perissodactyls, and euprimates at Albas lends support to the controversial hypothesis that these “modern” mammal groups appeared in the European fossil record during the PETM. In contrast, Albas yielded the European first definitive Paleocene record of metatherians, paromomyid primates, “creodonts,” and rodents, challenging the assumption that these groups migrated into Europe during the PETM. Because the majority of them originated from North American pre-POE species, we tentatively suggest that these “precursor” dispersers entered Europe during the POE. Similar to the modern orders during the PETM, these “precursor” dispersers likely entered Europe through corridors in the continuous evergreen forest belt at high latitudes. Our findings highlight how a brief warming event in the Arctic during the latest Paleocene, such as the POE (which could result in a release of carbon into the atmosphere similar to cumulative ongoing anthropogenic emissions), significantly influenced the evolutionary dynamics of European mammals
