    The challenge of LSP in languages other than English: adapting a language-neutral framework for Japanese

    International audienceAbstract The Global Engineers Languages and Skills (GELS) framework, developed as a language-neutral framework of engineering-specific communication skills, was adapted in 2023 for Japanese to address the language’s unique linguistic and cultural features. Adjustments included subdividing beginner levels, adding a guideline for learning the complex writing system, delaying the learning of specialized vocabulary to match the learner’s kanji proficiency, and aligning communication skills with Japanese norms, such as prioritizing harmony and indirectness in interactions. These changes ensure the Japanese GELS framework reflects Japanese learning contexts and supports learners’ progress effectively. This report advocates for language-specific frameworks for Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) that go beyond English-centric models, addressing diverse linguistic and cultural needs and thereby enhancing engineers’ intercultural competence, critical thinking, and diversity management. This report also underscores the need for ongoing updates to frameworks to reflect technological and pedagogical advancements and calls for international collaboration among teachers to promote multilingual awareness. By integrating the Japanese version, the GELS framework expands its scope, better preparing engineers for diverse global environments

    Tracking Inauthentic Amplification on Social Media: A Scalable Method to Detect Duplicated Messages

    Social networks are fertile ground for information manipulation campaigns. A common modus operandi is coordinated mass posting, which consists of publishing a large number of similar messages to give the impression that an opinion is widely shared. Despite potentially massive in volume, the use of sophisticated translation and generative AI tools makes the detection of such content a challenging process. To detect these artificially amplified texts, we propose the 3∆-space duplicate methodology. It considers three key aspects of messages: their semantic content, their grapheme structure, and their language. Computing pairwise distances within these dimensions enables the detection of abnormally close messages. Our methodology is designed to detect textual content that has been amplified through the use of copy-pasta, reformulation, and translation, enabling to target a wide range of messages. Its application on a real-world dataset of tweets about COP28 validates its effectiveness and its capabilities for analysing coordinated actions. Our contribution also includes the release of the first dataset for this task, created using well-known amplification tactics. The code and the dataset are released in open source

    Spectrophotometry of Jupiter Trojan with the Gaia DR3 catalog

    International audienceContext. Jupiter Trojans are considered to be among the most pristine bodies in the Solar System. They are believed to have originated from the Kuiper belt and subsequently captured by Jupiter during planetary migrations.Aims. We present the spectral characterization of Jupiter Trojans using data from the third data release by the Gaia mission (DR3) spectral catalog and from the literature, along with an analysis of the spectral slope correlations with physical parameters and a comparison with the main properties of outer Solar System bodies.Methods. The Gaia DR3 minor bodies spectral catalog comprises 478 Jupiter Trojans. Gaia spectrophotometry is available in 16 spectrophotometric points covering the 0.33–1.08 μm range. In this sample, we retained Trojans with a signal-to-noise ratio of S/N > 20 and we visually inspected the quality of those with lower S/N values. This process reduces the Trojans Gaia database to 320 objects. To enhance the statistical analysis, we also included the visible spectra (in the ~0.45–0.95 μm range) of Trojans available in the literature. The final dataset includes 519 Trojans, comprising 291 in the leading swarm (L4) and 228 in the trailing swarm (L5), which we classified using the Bus-Demeo and Mahlke classification schemes.Results. The Trojan population is dominated by featureless asteroids with red spectral slopes belonging to the D-type, with an important fraction (~40%) belonging to the Z-class (in Mahlke taxonomy), characterized by very red slopes. The L4 swarm shows a higher spectral variability and a higher amount, by a factor of 2, of less spectrally red asteroids belonging to the C, P, and X classes that are mainly associated with family members. Once excluding peculiar objects such as the members of Eurybates family, known to be dominated by C-type asteroids, the two swarms have indistinguishable average slopes and very similar albedo values (7.86±0.15% and 7.35±0.15% for the L4 and L5 swarms, respectively). We did not observe any spectral color bi-modality distribution, conversely to the results reported in the literature, which had previously led to the suggestion that Trojans originated from two different regions of the protoplanetary disk: one before and one behind the stability lines of some volatile ices, such as H2S. The spectral slope distribution is peaked at 9–11%/1000 Å and it is very narrow compared to that of Transneptunian objects (TNOs) or cometary nuclei.Conclusions. In the visible range, L4 and L5 Jupiter Trojans show very similar average slope and albedo values, even if the L4 swarm have a higher spectral variability mostly associated with some peculiar families. This points toward a common origin of the bodies of the two swarms, likely from the Transneptunian region. The visible spectral slopes of Trojans match those of the less red TNOs, notably those classified as bowl-type by Pinilla-Alonso et al. (2025, Nature Astronomy, 9, 230), and lack of extremely red and organic rich surfaces observed in the TNOs. We suggest that the Jupiter Trojans might have been captured by Jupiter from the Centaurs and scattered disk population. We propose that the lack of extremely red objects among Trojans could be due to the removal of the organic-rich crust through the sublimation of volatiles and collisions as TNOs migrated inward in the Solar System

    International audienceDans cette communication, nous proposons d’explorer le vécu des apprenants de la langue arabe et le sens qu’ils attribuent à leur apprentissage en tant que processus expérientiel.. Selon une approche compréhensive, nous plaçons le « sujet parlant » (Anderson, 2013, 2019) au cœur de notre démarche. Nous avons réalisé une enquête auprès des apprenants débutants dans le cadre de la formation LANSAD au Centre des langues de l’université de Lille (CLIL, 2022-2023).À travers une série d’entretiens, nous mettons en lumière diverses facettes de l’expérience d’apprentissage de cette langue et se représentations (Moore, 2001). Les témoignages recueillis révèlent des éléments essentiels, tels que les motivations qui sous-tendent cet apprentissage, les processus de découverte linguistique ainsi que les mécanismes de familiarisation et d’appropriation. Face à cette immersion dans un nouvel univers linguistique, les apprenants mettent en mots leur passage du connu vers l’inconnu traduisant ainsi des représentations et des imaginaires d’une langue autre (Smati, 2024). Il se manifeste, au travers de leurs dires, des réactions émotionnelles définies comme « des réactions à la perception d’un différentiel » (Chanouf & Rouan, 2002). Celles-ci témoignent d’un engagement actif dans l’apprentissage, marqué par des expériences sensorimotrices qui se révèlent au contact avec cette nouvelle langue. Ainsi, la familiarisation avec la langue arabe s’instaure de manière progressive conjuguant des aspects scripturaux, sensoriels et émotionnels que nous souhaitons partager à travers cette communication et qu'il serait pertinent d'explorer davantage
