    No full text

    The study of functions

    No full text
This is an introduction to the study of real functions, f:RRf:\mathbb R\to\mathbb R. We first discuss motivations and examples, ways of representing functions, and with a detailed look into the basic functions, namely polynomials, and sin,cos,exp,log\sin,\cos,\exp,\log. Then we discuss continuity, with the standard results on the subject, and notably with the Weierstrass approximation theorem. We then discuss derivatives, again with the standard results on the subject, notably with the Taylor formula and its applications. Finally, we discuss integrals, with what can be done with Riemann sums, the relation with the derivatives, and with a look into more advanced functional analysis, and several variables too

    No full text
Glycosides represent important carbohydrate motifs found in numerous natural products, as well as potential bioactive drugs and chemicals. Compared to O-glycosides, S- and C-glycosides are more stable under acidic conditions or in the presence of enzymes. N-glycosides also occupy a special position as they are present in DNA/RNA in the form of nucleosides. As a result, the efficient synthesis of various S-, N- and C-glycosides has attracted considerable attention. During my PhD, my research focused on developing new approaches for the synthesis of S-, N- and C-glycosides throught C-H actication strategy and metal-free catalytic functionalization of sugars. We first introduced the synthesis of S-glycosides via the functionalization of thiosugars. Over the past decades, C-S bond formation has been extensively studied through cross-coupling reactions catalyzed by transition metals, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. In contrast, C-H activation strategies remain underexplored, with only one example. Our first project foucused on the synthesis of 1-thiotrehaloses and 1-thiolated glycals via Cu-catalyzed C-H thiolation at the pseudo-anomeric position of glycals bearing an 8-amidoquinoline directing group, using thiosugars and thiols as coupling partners. In addition, we also developed a metal-free catalytic functionalization of thiosugars for the construction of alkenylthioglycosides, which provides an attractive alternative to metal-based methods.Subsequently, we turned our attention to the synthesis of N-glycosides. The construction of glycosidic bonds in N-glycosides has relied on polar reactions between N-nucleophilies and glycosyl oxocarbenium intermediates, radical N-glycosylation involving glycosyl radicals and N- nucleophiles, and Ferrier-type glycosylation of glycals. My projects-C-H amination of sialic glycals and Ferrier-type reaction of glycals without the use of external activator-expand the methodological toolbox for the efficient synthesis of N-glycosides.Finally, we focused on the synthesis of C-furanosides, given the extensive methods already developed for the construction of C-pyranosides. We developed a new approach for the synthesis of C3-aryl furanosides through Pd-catalyzed C(sp3)-H activation, enabled by a DMAQ directing group. In contrast to existing methods that functionalize the anomeric position of sugars, this strategy introduces (hetero)aryl groups at the C2 position of the furanose ring, thereby expanding the scope of C-glycoside synthesis. Moreover, this approach exhibits high 2,3-cis stereoselectivity and is compatible with a wide range of readily available aryl iodides. Conditions for the removal of the DMAQ directing group and selective deprotection of the OBn protecting groups were also presented. DFT calculations provide evidences of observed cis stereoselectivity of the reaction.

    No full text

    Arbor-TVB: A Novel Multi-Scale Co-Simulation Framework with a Case Study on Neural-Level Seizure Generation and Whole-Brain Propagation

    No full text
Computational neuroscience has traditionally focused on isolated scales, limiting understanding of brain function across multiple levels. While microscopic models capture biophysical details of neurons, macroscopic models describe large-scale network dynamics. Integrating these scales, however, remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present a novel co-simulation framework that bridges these levels by integrating the neural simulator Arbor with The Virtual Brain (TVB) platform. Arbor enables detailed simulations from single-compartment neurons to populations of such cell, while TVB models whole-brain dynamics based on anatomical features and the mean neural activity of a brain region. By linking these simulators for the first time, we provide an example of how to model and investigate the onset of seizures in specific areas and their propagation to the full brain. This framework employs an MPI intercommunicator for real-time bidirectional interaction, translating between discrete spikes from Arbor and continuous TVB activity. The novel Arbor-TVB co-simulator allows replacement of TVB nodes with biologically realistic neuron populations, offering insights into seizure propagation and potential intervention strategies. The integration of Arbor and TVB marks a significant advancement in multi-scale modeling, providing a comprehensive computational framework for studying neural disorders and optimizing treatments

Virgo Filaments. V. Disrupting the Baryon Cycle in the NGC 5364 Galaxy Group

    No full text
International audienceThe Virgo Filament Survey (VFS) is a comprehensive study of galaxies that reside in the extended filamentary structures surrounding the Virgo Cluster, out to 12 virial radii. The primary goal is to characterize all of the dominant baryonic components within galaxies and to understand whether and how they are affected by the filament environment. A key constituent of VFS is a narrowband Hα imaging survey of over 600 galaxies, VFS-Hα. The Hα images reveal detailed, resolved maps of the ionized gas and massive star formation. This imaging is particularly powerful as a probe of environmentally induced quenching because different physical processes affect the spatial distribution of star formation in different ways. In this paper, we present the first results from the VFS-Hα for the NGC 5364 group, a low-mass system located at the western edge of the Virgo III filament. We combine Hα imaging with resolved H I observations from MeerKAT for eight group members. These galaxies exhibit peculiar morphologies, including strong distortions in the stars and the gas, truncated H I and Hα disks, H I tails, extraplanar Hα emission, and off-center Hα emission. These signatures are suggestive of environmental processing such as tidal interactions, ram pressure stripping, and starvation. We quantify the role of ram pressure stripping expected in this group, and find that it can explain the cases of H I tails and truncated Hα for all but one of the disk-dominated galaxies. Our observations indicate that multiple physical mechanisms are disrupting the baryon cycle in these group galaxies

SimSDP, a Rapid Prototyping tool for Radio Astronomy: From NenuFAR Experiments to SKAO-Scale Simulation

    No full text
International audienceThe Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) will generate unprecedented volumes of data, requiring its Science Data Processor (SDP) to operate at terabyte rates under strict energy and performance constraints. Anticipating the computational cost of imaging algorithms is therefore critical for both astronomers and system designers. Yet, testing new algorithmic strategies directly on large HPC platforms is often impractical, due to cost, limited availability, and long development cycles. To address this, we present SimSDP, a rapid prototyping tool designed to support the development and optimization of radio-astronomy imaging pipelines for the future SKAO SDP. The tool enables early exploration of algorithmic choices and their impact on computational performance and energy consumption without requiring access to large-scale systems. In this work, we illustrate its use through three case studies: (1) modeling different strategies for spectral parallelism (joint vs. distributed deconvolution), (2) simulating pipeline execution on large-scale multi-core, multi-node systems with realistic observation sizes, and (3) prototyping pipelines with real-world data from the NenuFAR instrument. These experiments highlight how SimSDP can help astronomers and instrument designers anticipate the computational cost of imaging algorithms, compare different processing strategies, and better align algorithmic development with the capabilities of future HPC infrastructures. The tool is integrated into the PREESM framework and available as open-source, with future work aiming at extending models to GPU-based systems

Engineering, hydration and durability properties of eco-friendly slag/glass powder metasilicate-activated binders

    No full text
International audienceSearching for alternative materials to Portland cement mixtures has become a strong stream tailoring engineering research and practices today. In this respect, alkali-activated binders (AABs) with glass powder and slag (GP/S) were considered in this work. Indeed, our goal was to provide a comprehensive investigation of GP/S mixtures with varying glass powder content. Thus, five pastes’ PPC, PS, PG20, PG40, PG60, and five mortars MPC, MS, MG20, MG40, and MG60 were made. Mortars were tested for mechanical strengths, water sorptivity, and 10 % magnesium sulfate attack. Pastes were investigated by FTIR. The results showed higher mechanical strength of activated formulae, with 20% GP as optimum; elevated AABs sorptivity, CSH, and (C,N)ASH were the main hydration products, cracking/dissolution is the main mechanism of AABs under magnesium sulfate
