    Likelihood ratio data to report the validation of a forensic fingerprint evaluation method

    AbstractData to which the authors refer to throughout this article are likelihood ratios (LR) computed from the comparison of 5–12 minutiae fingermarks with fingerprints. These LRs data are used for the validation of a likelihood ratio (LR) method in forensic evidence evaluation. These data present a necessary asset for conducting validation experiments when validating LR methods used in forensic evidence evaluation and set up validation reports. These data can be also used as a baseline for comparing the fingermark evidence in the same minutiae configuration as presented in (D. Meuwly, D. Ramos, R. Haraksim,) [1], although the reader should keep in mind that different feature extraction algorithms and different AFIS systems used may produce different LRs values. Moreover, these data may serve as a reproducibility exercise, in order to train the generation of validation reports of forensic methods, according to [1]. Alongside the data, a justification and motivation for the use of methods is given. These methods calculate LRs from the fingerprint/mark data and are subject to a validation procedure. The choice of using real forensic fingerprint in the validation and simulated data in the development is described and justified. Validation criteria are set for the purpose of validation of the LR methods, which are used to calculate the LR values from the data and the validation report. For privacy and data protection reasons, the original fingerprint/mark images cannot be shared. But these images do not constitute the core data for the validation, contrarily to the LRs that are shared

    Impact of Arctic Oscillation on the East Asian climate: A review

    AbstractThe Arctic Oscillation (AO), which depicts a most dominant large-scale seesaw between the mid-latitudes and Arctic atmospheric mass, influences climate over Eurasia, North America, eastern Canada, North Africa, and the Middle East, especially during boreal winter. This review, with a special focus on the East Asian region, summarizes the climatic impact of AO. It begins with a description of the spatial structure of AO and the related climatic anomalies. The relationship of winter AO with the simultaneous East Asian winter climate (e.g. the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM), cold surges/cold waves, and precipitation) and its instability are then followed. It is generally accepted that, through impacting the Siberian high, westerly wind, blocking frequency, Rossby wave activities etc., a positive phase of winter AO is associated with a weaker-than-normal EAWM, warmer conditions in East Asia, less frequency of cold surges/cold waves, increasing (decreasing) of winter precipitation in south (north) parts of East Asia; and vice versa. Notably, the pathways that the winter AO exerts impact are different. Besides, the AO-EAWM and the AO-cold surges/cold wave linkages have spatial and temporal variations. Subsequently, an overview of the inter-seasonal linkages between the East Asian summer monsoon with the preceding spring/winter AO is presented. There is a generally accepted knowledge that a positive spring AO is followed by significant positive summer precipitation anomalies in southern China and western Pacific as well as negative ones in the lower valley of Yangtze River and southern Japan. Finally, this review synthesizes the impact of winter/spring AO on the East Asian spring climate (e.g. dust storm, temperature, and precipitation) and discusses the potential predictive value of AO. The projection of AO and its impact on the East Asian climate in future has been barely explored. We conclude that, along with the long-term observation data, the linkage between AO and the East Asian climate on the sub-seasonal and decadal time scales, how tropical and extratropical forcing modulates the linkage and how the linkage evolves under future warming conditions should be more investigated. Notably, the change of AO during 1990–2013 winters could explain the Eurasian cooling but failed to explain the Arctic warming.     Comparative effectiveness of pediatric integrative medicine as an adjunct to usual care for pediatric inpatients of a North American tertiary care centre: A study protocol for a pragmatic cluster controlled trial

    AbstractBackgroundSome pediatric tertiary care centres in North America supplement conventional care with complementary therapies, together known as pediatric integrative medicine (PIM). Evidence to support the safety and efficacy of PIM is emerging, but the cost-effectiveness of an inpatient PIM service has yet to be assessed.Methods/DesignThis study is a pragmatic cluster controlled clinical trial. Usual care will be compared to usual care augmented with PIM in three pediatric divisions; oncology, general medicine, and cardiology at one large urban tertiary care Canadian Children's Hospital. The primary outcome of the feasibility study is enrolment; the primary outcome of the main study is cost-effectiveness. Other secondary outcomes include the prevalence and severity of key symptoms (i.e. pain, nausea/vomiting and anxiety), efficacy of PIM interventions, patient safety, and parent satisfaction.DiscussionThis trial will be the first to evaluate the comparative effectiveness, both clinical and cost, of a PIM inpatient service. The evidence from this study will be useful to families, clinicians and decision makers, and will describe the clinical and economic value of PIM services for pediatric patients admitted to hospital

    AbstractStudy regionHokusetsu Region in Osaka, Japan.Study focusThe As contamination was investigated through the geochemical mapping and analysis of river waters and bed sediments over an area of 440km2. Sulfur from sulfides in rocks and dissolved sulfates in water were compared via isotopic analysis to assess their origin and the subsequently released As. The fate of As (transport, binding on settling particles) was evaluated through the total and dissolved fractions of As and trace metals Fe, Mn and Al in river waters.New hydrological insights for the regionThe geochemical mapping showed that As in river water exceeded the maximum limit concentration of 10ppb in several places. The highest As levels (waters and sediments) correlated well with the surface geologies, concentrating in a halo around granitic intrusion and nearby faults. The isotopic analysis of sulfur revealed the occurrence of two kinds of sulfide mineralizations responsible for As contamination: one from Late Paleozoic submarine volcanism in sedimentary rocks, and one from Late Cretaceous igneous activities in contact-metamorphosed rocks disseminated with sulfides. The transport of As along river courses occurred mainly as a dissolved species rather than absorbed on Fe/Mn/Al particles, signifying the least role of iron oxy-hydroxides in As adsorption

    Alkaloids and biological activity of beribá (Annona hypoglauca)

    AbstractAnnona hypoglauca Mart., Annonaceae, popularly known as “beribá”, was collected in flooded areas of the Amazonian Rain Forest. The crude extract obtained from this species was found to be cytotoxic against human cancer cells. Chemical information on A. hypoglauca is scarce. So, the present work aimed the isolation and identification of its alkaloids and to test their cytotoxic activity. Alkaloids were obtained from stem by acid–base partitioning and the remaining alkaloid-free extract was partitioned with organic solvents. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry GC/MS analysis of total alkaloids allowed the identification of four aporphine alkaloids: actinodaphnine, anonaine, isoboldine and nornuciferine. Total alkaloids were fractionated by column chromatography and were purified by preparative thin-layer-chromatography, which allowed the isolation of two aporphine alkaloids, actinodaphnine and isoboldine, characterized by NMR and CG–MS analyses. This is the first report for the occurrence of actinodaphnine in Annona species. All the samples were tested in cytotoxic and antibacterial assays. Total alkaloid extract and its fractions showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. In the cytotoxicity assay, the crude extract showed a lethal effect against breast and colon cancer cells. Isoboldine-containing FA5 and actinodaphnine-containing FA6 showed activity against breast cancer cell line, while the alkaloid-free fractions did not show significant activity against cancer cell lines

    AbstractHydatid disease is an important economic and human public health problem with a wide geographical distribution. Surgical excision remains the primary treatment and the only hope for complete cure of hydatosis. The most important complications arising from surgical excision, however, is recurrence, which is due to dissemination of protoscolices during the surgery. Pre-surgical inactivation of the contents of the hydatid cyst by injection of scolicidal agent into the cyst has been used as adjunct to surgery in order to overcome the risk of recurrence. In the present study, ethanolic extracts of turmeric (Curcuma longa) and ginger (Zingiber officinale) were tested as scolicidal agent for Echinococcus protoscoleces. Protoscoleces were collected aseptically from sheep livers containing hydatid cysts. Three concentrations (10, 30 and 50mg/ml) of each extract were investigated and viability of the protoscoleces was tested by 0.1% eosin staining. Ginger extract showed the strongest scolicidal effect (100%) after 20min at a concentration of 30mg/ml and 10min at 50mg/ml. The maximum scolicidal effect of turmeric was 93.2% after 30min at a concentration of 50mg/ml. It is concluded that turmeric and ginger extracts have high scolicidal activity and could be used as effective scolicidal agents against Echinococcus protoscoleces

    Modulation of precipitation by conditional symmetric instability release

    AbstractAlthough many theoretical and observational studies have investigated the mechanism of conditional symmetric instability (CSI) release and associated it with mesoscale atmospheric phenomena such as frontal precipitation bands, cloud heads in rapidly developing extratropical cyclones and sting jets, its climatology and contribution to precipitation have not been extensively documented. The aim of this paper is to quantify the contribution of CSI release, yielding slantwise convection, to climatological precipitation accumulations for the North Atlantic and western Europe. Case studies reveal that CSI release could be common along cold fronts of mature extratropical cyclones and the North Atlantic storm track is found to be a region with large CSI according to two independent CSI metrics. Correlations of CSI with accumulated precipitation are also large in this region and CSI release is inferred to be occurring about 20% of the total time over depths of over 1 km. We conclude that the inability of current global weather forecast and climate prediction models to represent CSI release (due to insufficient resolution yet lack of subgrid parametrization schemes) may lead to errors in precipitation distributions, particularly in the region of the North Atlantic storm track

    Effect of novel dietary supplement on metabolism in vitro and in vivo

    AbstractObesity is an increasingly prevalent and preventable morbidity with multiple behavioral, surgical and pharmacological interventions currently available. Commercial dietary supplements are often advertised to stimulate metabolism and cause rapid weight and/or fat loss, although few well-controlled studies have demonstrated such effects. We describe a commercially available dietary supplement (purportedly containing caffeine, catechins, and other metabolic stimulators) on resting metabolic rate in humans, and on metabolism, mitochondrial content, and related gene expression in vitro. Human males ingested either a placebo or commercially available supplement (RF) in a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled cross-over fashion. Metabolic rate, respiratory exchange ratio, and blood pressure were measured hourly for 3 h post-ingestion. To investigate molecular effects, human rhabdomyosarcoma cells (RD) and mouse myocytes (C2C12) were treated with various doses of RF for various durations. RF enhanced energy expenditure and systolic blood pressure in human males without altering substrate utilization. In myocytes, RF enhanced metabolism, metabolic gene expression, and mitochondrial content suggesting RF may target common energetic pathways which control mitochondrial biogenesis. RF appears to increase metabolism immediately following ingestion, although it is unclear if RF provides benefits beyond those provided by caffeine alone. Additional research is needed to examine safety and efficacy for human weight loss

    Study of isotherm and kinetic models of lanthanum adsorption on activated carbon loaded with recently synthesized Schiff’s base

    AbstractA new effective adsorbent was developed for a selective extraction and determination of lanthanum from aqueous media by use of inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. The new adsorbent was based on activated carbon modified with Schiff’s base derived from diethylenetriamine and 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (AC-DETADHBA). Isotherm and kinetic models were systematically investigated to evaluate the analytical potential of the AC-DETADHBA phase toward La(III) by employing a batch adsorption technique. Surface properties of AC-DETADHBA were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. The maximum static adsorption capacity was determined to be 144.80mgg−1 at pH 6, providing that the adsorption capacity of La(III) was improved by 61.79% with the AC-DETADHBA phase as compared to the carboxylic acid derivative of activated carbon after only 1h contact time. Adsorption isotherm results demonstrated that the adsorption process was mainly monolayer on a homogeneous adsorbent surface, confirming the validity of Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Data obtained from kinetic models study indicated that the adsorption of La(III) onto the AC-DETADHBA phase obeyed a pseudo second-order kinetic model. In addition, results of thermodynamic investigation also revealed that the adsorption mechanism of AC-DETADHBA toward La(III) is a general spontaneous process and favorable. The effect of several coexisting metal ions displayed that the recovery of La(III) was not affected by the medium composition containing either individual or mixed metals. Finally, the newly proposed method gave satisfactory results for the determination of La(III) in environmental water samples

    Development of novel replication-defective lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus vectors expressing SIV antigens

    AbstractAn important focus in vaccine research is the design of vaccine vectors with low seroprevalence and high immunogenicity. Replication-incompetent lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (rLCMV) vectors do not elicit vector-neutralizing antibody responses, and homologous prime-boost regimens with rLCMV vectors induce boostable and protective T cell responses to model antigens in mice. However, cellular and humoral immune responses following homologous rLCMV vaccine regimens have not been rigorously evaluated in non-human primates (NHPs). To test whether rLCMV vectors constitute an effective vaccine platform in NHPs, we developed rLCMV vectors expressing SIVmac239 Env and Gag antigens and assessed their immunogenicity in mice and cynomolgus macaques. Immunization with rLCMV vaccine vectors expressing SIV Env and Gag was effective at generating SIV-specific T cell and antibody responses in both mice and NHPs. Epitope mapping using SIV Env in C57BL/6 mice demonstrated that rLCMV vectors induced sustained poly-functional responses to both dominant and subdominant epitopes. Our results suggest the potential of rLCMV vectors as vaccine candidates. Future SIV challenge experiments in rhesus macaques will be needed to assess immune protection by these vaccine vectors
