    226Ra and 210Po concentration in drinking water of Cauvery river basin south interior Karnataka State, India

    AbstractNaturally occurring radionuclide 210Po which is an element of 238U decay series, contribute to the radiation that normally people are exposed. Drinking water samples collected from Cauvery river basin of south interior Karnataka State, India were analysed for the activity of 210Po using radiochemical analysis technique. The estimated concentration of 210Po in river water ranges from 0.86 to 4.49 mBq l−1, and its mean value is 2.67 ± 1.09 mBq l−1. The concentration of 210Po in bore well water ranges from 1.89 to 4.18 mBq l−1 and its mean value is 3.22 ± 0.67 mBq l−1. The dissolved radium concentration in river water varies from 9.09 mBq l−1 to 55.07 mBq l−1 with an average of 32.33 ± 14.16 mBq l−1. Total ingestion dose rate due to 226Ra and 210Po varies from 2.61 to 15.00 μSv y−1 with a mean value of 8.95 ± 3.74 μSv y−1, which is less than the recommended value by ICRP (International commission on radiological protection)

    Short-term comparison between extended depth-of-focus prototype contact lenses and a commercially-available center-near multifocal

    AbstractPurposeTo compare the visual performance of prototype contact lenses which extend depth-of-focus (EDOF) by deliberate manipulation of multiple higher-order spherical aberration terms and a commercially-available center-near lens (AIR OPTIX Aqua Multifocal, AOMF).MethodsThis was a prospective, cross-over, randomized, single-masked (participant), short-term clinical trial where 52 participants (age 45–70 years) were stratified as low, medium or high presbyopes and wore EDOF and AOMF on different days. Objective measures comprised high and low contrast visual acuity (HCVA/LCVA, logMAR), and contrast sensitivity (log units) at 6m; HCVA at 70cm, 50cm and 40cm and stereopsis (seconds of arc) at 40cm. HCVA at 70cm, 50cm and 40cm were measured as “comfortable acuity” rather than conventional resolution acuity. Subjective measures comprised clarity-of-vision and ghosting at distance, intermediate and near, overall vision satisfaction and ocular comfort (1–10 numeric rating scale) and lens purchase (yes/no response). Statistical analysis included repeated measures ANOVA, paired t-tests and McNemar's test.ResultsSignificant differences between lens types were independent of strata (p≥0.119). EDOF was significantly better than AOMF for HCVA at 40cm (0.42±0.18 vs. 0.48±0.22, p=0.024), stereopsis (98±88 vs. 141±114, p<0.001), clarity-of-vision at intermediate (8.5±1.6 vs. 7.7±1.9, p=0.006) and near (7.3±2.5 vs. 6.2±2.5, p=0.005), lack-of-ghosting (p=0.012), overall vision satisfaction (7.5±1.7 vs. 6.4±2.2, p<0.001) and ocular comfort (9.0±1.0 vs. 8.3±1.7, p=0.002). Significantly more participants chose to only-purchase EDOF (33% vs. 6%, p=0.003).). There were no significant differences between lens types for any objective measure at 6m or clarity-of-vision at distance (p≥0.356).ConclusionsEDOF provides better intermediate and near vision performance in presbyopes than AOMF with no difference for distance vision during short-term wear

    Fabrication and characterization of zinc oxide nanofibers for renewable energy applications

    AbstractNanometer (nm) scale 1D zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofibers were fabricated through sol–gel processing and electrospinning of Polyvinyl alcohal (PVA) and zinc acetate precursors. The structure and morphologies of the zinc acetate/PVA precursor and ZnO nanofibers were studied by fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Bead free smooth nanofibers with increased average diameters (278nm (5wt.%) and 423nm (15wt.%)) were obtained as the content of zinc acetate precursor was increased. The calcination temperature of 480°C was determined from TGA. FTIR, XRD and TGA studies carried out after calcinations, confirmed the formation of ZnO nanofibers by the appearance of a band at 472cm−1, characteristic ZnO pattern (i.e. peaks at ∼31.820, 34.331, 36.496, 47.569 and 57.168 2θ degree) and no weight loss after 480°C, respectively. The burning of polymer has also been confirmed by a significant decrease in average diameter (124nm (5wt.%) and 197nm (15wt.%)) of the ZnO nanofibers. Electrospinning has been found to be a simple and cost effective technique for the synthesis of ID ZnO nanofibers mat for potential applications in the renewable energy devices

    Experimental investigation of insolation-driven dust ejection from Mars’ CO2 ice caps

    AbstractMars’ polar caps are – depending on hemisphere and season - partially or totally covered with CO2 ice. Icy surfaces such as the polar caps of Mars behave differently from surfaces covered with rock and soil when they are irradiated by solar light. The latter absorb and reflect incoming solar radiation within a thin layer beneath the surface. In contrast, ices are partially transparent in the visible spectral range and opaque in the infrared. Due to this fact, the solar radiation can penetrate to a certain depth and raise the temperature of the ice or dust below the surface. This may play an important role in the energy balance of icy surfaces in the solar system, as already noted in previous investigations. We investigated the temperature profiles inside CO2 ice samples including a dust layer under Martian conditions. We have been able to trigger dust eruptions, but also demonstrated that these require a very narrow range of temperature and ambient pressure. We discuss possible implications for the understanding of phenomena such as arachneiform patterns or fan shaped deposits as observed in Mars’ southern polar region

    Soundscape analysis and acoustic monitoring document impacts of natural gas exploration on biodiversity in a tropical forest

    AbstractNatural resource extraction is increasing rapidly in tropical forests, but we lag behind in understanding the impacts of these disturbances on biodiversity. In high diversity tropical habitats, acoustic monitoring is an efficient tool for sampling a large proportion of the fauna across varied spatial and temporal scales. We used passive acoustic monitoring in a pre-montane forest in Peru to investigate how soundscape composition and richness of acoustic frequencies varied with distance from a natural gas exploratory well and with operational phase (construction and drilling). We also evaluated how anuran and avian species richness and vocal activity varied with distance and between phases. Soundscape analyses showed that acoustic frequency similarity was greatest among sites closer to (≤250m) and farther from (≥500m) the platform. Soundscapes revealed more frequencies were used during construction and showed a weak trend of increasing frequency richness with increasing distance from the disturbance. Avian species richness and detections increased with distance from the platform, but anuran richness and detections declined with distance. Operational phase did not play a significant role in overall richness or activity patterns of either group. Among birds, insectivore detections increased with distance from the platform, and nectarivores were detected more frequently during the drilling phase. Results demonstrate that acoustic monitoring and soundscape analyses are useful tools for evaluating the impact of development activity on the vocalizing community, and should be implemented as a best practice in monitoring biodiversity and for guiding specific mitigation strategies

    Brazilian borreliosis with special emphasis on humans and horses

    AbstractBorreliosis caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is a cosmopolitan zoonosis studied worldwide; it is called Lyme disease in many countries of the Northern Hemisphere and Lyme-like or Baggio-Yoshinari Syndrome in Brazil. However, despite the increasing number of suspect cases, this disease is still neglected in Brazil by the medical and veterinary communities. Brazilian Lyme-like borreliosis likely involves capybaras as reservoirs and Amblyomma and Rhipicephalus ticks as vectors. Thus, domestic animals can serve as key carriers in pathogen dissemination. This zoonosis has been little studied in horses in Brazil. The first survey was performed in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and this Brazilian Borreliosis exhibits many differences from the disease widely described in the Northern Hemisphere. The etiological agent shows different morphological and genetic characteristics, the disease has a higher recurrence rate after treatment with antibiotics, and the pathogen stimulates intense symptoms such as a broader immune response in humans. Additionally, the Brazilian zoonosis is not transmitted by the Ixodes ricinus complex. With respect to clinical manifestations, Baggio-Yoshinari Syndrome has been reported to cause neurological, cardiac, ophthalmic, muscle, and joint alterations in humans. These symptoms can possibly occur in horses. Here, we present a current panel of studies involving the disease in humans and equines, particularly in Brazil

    AbstractCounter abstraction is a powerful tool for parameterized model checking, if the number of local states of the concurrent processes is relatively small. In recent work, we introduced parametric interval counter abstraction that allowed us to verify the safety and liveness of threshold-based fault-tolerant distributed algorithms (FTDA). Due to state space explosion, applying this technique to distributed algorithms with hundreds of local states is challenging for state-of-the-art model checkers. In this paper, we demonstrate that reachability properties of FTDAs can be verified by bounded model checking. To ensure completeness, we need an upper bound on the distance between states. We show that the diameters of accelerated counter systems of FTDAs, and of their counter abstractions, have a quadratic upper bound in the number of local transitions. Our experiments show that the resulting bounds are sufficiently small to use bounded model checking for parameterized verification of reachability properties of several FTDAs, some of which have not been automatically verified before

    Trim32 Deficiency Enhances Th2 Immunity and Predisposes to Features of Atopic Dermatitis

    Altered innate immunity is a feature of certain skin inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (AD). In this study, we provide evidence that deficiency in Trim32 (a tripartite motif [TRIM] protein with innate antiviral activity) contributes to a T helper type 2 biased response and predisposes to features of AD in mice. On treatment with the toll-like receptor 7 agonist imquimod (IMQ), Trim32 knockout mice displayed compromised psoriasiform phenotypes and defective T helper type 17 response. Instead, IMQ treatment of Trim32 knockout mice induced AD-like phenotypes with enhanced skin infiltration of eosinophils and mast cells, elevation of T helper type 2 cytokines/chemokines expression, and reduced expression of filaggrin protein expression. Furthermore, although the induction of phosphorylated Stat3 and RelA was compromised after IMQ treatment in the knockout mice, phosphorylated Stat6 was elevated. CC chemokine ligand 20 induction by tumor necrosis factor-α and IL-17A was reduced in Trim32-deficient keratinocytes, whereas CC chemokine ligand 5 induction by tumor necrosis factor-α and IL-4 was enhanced. In addition, Trim32 protein levels were elevated in mice treated with IMQ. Unlike Trim32 overexpression in psoriasis, TRIM32 levels were low in patients with AD. Based on Trim32 induction by IMQ, the lower levels of TRIM32 in AD skin compared with healthy control and psoriatic skin suggest a defective TRIM32 pathway in AD pathogenesis

    AbstractCell-to-cell communication or quorum sensing (QS) leads to biofilm formation and causing other virulence factors which are extreme problems for food safety, biofilm related infectious diseases etc. This study evaluated the anti-QS activity of the Amomum tsaoko extract (0.5–4mg/ml) by using Chromobacterium violaceum a biosensor strain and biofilm formation by crystal violate assay. Experimental results demonstrated that the overall yield of Amomum tsao-ko extract was 11.33±0.3% (w/w). MIC for Staphylococcus aureus (Gram positive), Salmonella Typhimurium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram negative) was 1, 2 and 2mg/ml, respectively. A concentration of 4mg/ml extract showed highest biofilm inhibition 51.96% on S. Typhimurium when 47.06%, 45.28% were shown by S. aureus, P. aeruginosa respectively. The damage of biofilm architecture was observed by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM). A level of 44.59% inhibition of violacein production was demonstrated when the dose was 4mg/ml. Swarming motility inhibition was observed in a dose dependent manner. Taken together, the treatment of A. tsaoko extract can deliver value to food product and medicine by controlling pathogenesis

    Impact of split completeness on future liver remnant hypertrophy in associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) in hepatocellular carcinoma: Complete-ALPPS versus partial-ALPPS

    BackgroundRecent evidence suggested that associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy with a partial split could effectively induce the same degree of future liver remnant hypertrophy as a complete split in non-cirrhotic and non-cholestatic livers with better postoperative safety profiles. Our aim was to evaluate if the same phenomenon could be applied to hepatitis-related chronic liver diseases.MethodsIn the study, 25 patients who underwent associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy from October 2013 to January 2016 for hepatocellular carcinoma were analyzed. Partial-associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (n = 12) was defined as 50–80% of the transection surface split and complete-associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (n = 13) was split down to inferior vena cava. Perioperative outcomes stratified by split completeness were evaluated.ResultsThere was no significant difference in operating times and blood loss for stage I and II operations between complete-associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy and partial-associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy. All patients underwent stage II operation without any inter-stage complications. Complete split induced greater future liver remnant hypertrophy than partial split (hypertrophy rate: 31.2 vs 17.5 mL/day, P = .022) with more pronounced effect in chronic hepatitis (P = .007) than cirrhosis (P = .283). Complete-associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy was more likely to attain a future liver remnant/estimated standard liver volume ratio >35% within 10 days (76.9% vs 33.3%, P = .024) and proceed to stage II within 14 days after stage I (100% vs 58.4%, P = .009). The overall postoperative morbidity (≥grade 3a) after stage II was 16% (complete versus partial split: 7.7% vs 25%, P = .238) and hospital mortality after stage II was 8% (complete versus partial split: 0% vs 16.7%, P = .125).ConclusionComplete-associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy induced more rapid future liver remnant hypertrophy than partial-associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy without increased perioperative risk in chronic liver diseases
