Interdisciplinary Studies at Grand Valley State: Brooks College at Twenty
Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies (BCOIS) at Grand Valley State University (GV) just concluded its twentieth-anniversary year—the college began operating as the College of University-wide Interdisciplinary Initiatives (CUII) in the Fall of 2004. But interdisciplinary studies at GV has a much longer history. “Interdisciplinarity,” a term that defies definition, has been a touchstone of many GV academic program since 1968, when the School of General Studies began operation, leading to the creation of the Cluster College system two years later. In the 1980s, the Cluster Colleges closed and their programs and majors moved into a new divisional structure. This study, focused chiefly on academic programs, begins with a brief outline of the history of the Cluster Colleges and then goes on to detail how the arrival of a new provost in 2002 revived and reshaped the idea of an independent college dedicated to interdisciplinary experiments.https://scholarworks.gvsu.edu/reports/1019/thumbnail.jp
DUSP8 GENE EXPRESSION IS INCREASED UPON THE STIMULATION OF HEK293 CELLS
Dual specificity phosphatase 8 (DUSP8) is one of the phosphatases that oppose the activity of mitogen-activated protein kinases. Previous mouse studies have demonstrated the functional role of DUSP8 in regulating cardiomyocyte growth. However, it is still unclear how the activity of DUSP8 is regulated, and little is known about the regulation of DUSP8 at the gene level. The goal of this study is to determine whether the DUSP8 gene is immediately transcribed upon MAPK activation in the cells. Here, we found that the expression of the DUSP8 gene was significantly increased after stimulation of cells for 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. Together, our study provides the basic molecular mechanism to help understand DUSP8 enzymatic activity regulation
Constructing Identities Through Literacy: Channeling the Power of Interactive Read-alouds in the Elementary Classroom
This article explores the often-overlooked potential of interactive read-alouds as a conduit for identity exploration in the elementary classroom. While read-alouds are commonly used to support comprehension and vocabulary acquisition, they can also serve as powerful tools for helping students construct and explore their identities—when implemented with intentionality. Drawing on practical classroom strategies—including rehearsing academic conversations, intentionally introducing unfamiliar vocabulary, and creating a safe, non-judgmental space—this article illustrates how read-alouds can foster both language growth and self-understanding. Designed for elementary educators, the piece encourages teachers to view read-alouds not just as literacy instruction, but as opportunities to empower young learners to find their voice and see themselves reflected in language
Intro to Systematic Reviews, or, How to Make a Peach Cobbler
This slide deck is for a workshop provided for students new to systematic and scoping reviews. It uses the metaphor of making a peach cobbler to illustrate the steps of creating a systematic or scoping review. It includes a few review questions, a link to evaluating the presenter\u27s instruction (Which should be changed for any derivatives), and a link to a peach cobbler recipe
How did the pandemic change the role of recreational waters in bringing visitors? Analysis of South Carolina mobility big data
The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on nature-based recreational activities. Outdoor recreation became popular as an alternative to international travel with less risk of contagion. However, the question remains whether there was an enduring change in the role of natural resources in driving visitors. This study investigates the relevance of recreational waters, particularly lakes and beaches, to changes in patterns of domestic visitors to South Carolina between 2019 and 2023. All counties showed growth in recreational visitors, as well as diversification of visitors. However, the magnitude of the increase showed a significant difference based on geographical factors. Eight coastal counties showed a smaller increase in in-state visitor numbers compared to the rest. Counties located closer to five major lakes exhibited a greater growth in out-of-state visitor demand. Additionally, being close to major lakes was related to a greater increase in the diversity of visitor demand. Our findings signify the shifting demand for recreational waters in South Carolina, from coastal to lake. From an economic perspective, this shift can promote local businesses that target lake visitors. Additionally, diversified visitor demand supports the resilience of the hospitality and tourism sectors. However, this also raises the need to anticipate and prepare for a broader impact of increased recreational demand for lakes, such as disturbances to their ecosystems
Stay to Play: Multi-level Stakeholders and Motivation in Youth Sports Tourism
In this study, the stay to play model of hosting elite youth sports events was investigated by exploring the various stakeholder perspectives in staging youth sport events, specifically soccer. This research explored the motivations and gaps among the event organizers, the housing authorities (booking agencies), governing bodies and leagues, as well as the destination marketing organization. This study explored the relationship, unique value proposition, and gaps between the services provided by the stay to play organizers and participants. By exploring these concepts, a better understanding of the stay to play model is achieved, and destination marketers and management associations can make better strategic decisions. This study utilized a prominent national youth soccer league championship tournament to examine the dynamics of the stay to play phenomenon. In-depth interviews with multiple stakeholders at the culminating national event helped inform the motivations for the stay to play model currently utilized in elite youth sports and shed light on how stay to play has become such a dominant model in elite club sports. Recommendations for sport and hospitality providers are forwarded based on the findings of the study
