An enduring, 20-year, multidisciplinary seal-borne ocean sensor research collaboration in the Southern Ocean

    No full text
International audienceOver the last 20 years (2004 to 2025), a French-Australian research and ocean observing collaboration has collected > 400,000 temperature-salinity profiles providing broad coverage within the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean. The collaboration is the cornerstone of the emerging global Animal-Borne Oceanographic Sensors (AniBOS) network, from which the data are freely available to the operational, ocean and climate research, and public communities. These data are a primary source of information for the study of ocean properties in this remote region, enabling major advances in knowledge of dense water formation, glacial ice shelf melting, frontal structure and recent trends driven by climate change in the Southern Ocean. The data have also provided key observations of biological processes, redefining our understanding of the ecology of seals in the Southern Ocean and providing a detailed picture of how they utilise their dynamic ocean-ice environment. The two-fold delivery of essential oceanographic and ecological observations makes this a flagship program, one which has enabled a step-change in our understanding of coupling between physics and biology. Sustaining the observations delivered by AniBOS is critical within the context of a rapidly changing Southern Ocean, for detecting change and anticipating consequences for these unique coupled systems

The copper ionophore disulfiram improves mitochondrial function in various yeast and human cellular models of mitochondrial diseases

International audienceAbstract The copper ionophore disulfiram (DSF) is commonly used to treat chronic alcoholism and has potential anti-cancer activity. Using a yeast-based screening assay of FDA-approved compounds, DSF was herein identified for its ability to improve oxidative phosphorylation-dependent growth of various yeast models of mitochondrial diseases caused by a wide range of defects in ATP synthase, complexes III and IV, cardiolipin remodeling, maintenance and translation of the mitochondrial genome. This compound also showed beneficial effects in cells derived from patients suffering from Barth or MELAS syndromes, two mitochondrial diseases associated respectively with a lack in cardiolipin remodeling and protein synthesis inside the organelle. We provide evidence that the rescuing activity of DSF results from its ability to transport copper ions across biological membranes. Indeed, other copper ionophores (pyrithione and elesclomol) and supplementation of the growth media with copper ions had also beneficial effects in yeast and human cells with dysfunctional mitochondria. Our data suggest that the copper-dependent rescuing activity in these cells results from a better capacity to assemble cytochrome c oxidase. Altogether, our findings hold promise for the development of new therapeutic strategies for mitochondrial disorders

Severe environmental constraints can alter mitochondrial coupling efficiency: is it truly beneficial or only the last chance to survive?

International audienceConverting food to cellular energy (ATP) is a fundamental requirement to sustain life. In aerobic organisms, mitochondria are the major source of ATP, becoming a strong physiological link between environmental resources and organism’s performances. Environmental fluctuations in abiotic (temperature and oxygen) and biotic (food resources) parameters have the potential to alter mitochondrial oxidative ATP production and efficiency at different temporal levels. For instance, it is well described that thermal acclimation induces compensatory adjustments triggering mitochondrial fluxes resilience across large shifts in temperature. Poor food quality or quantity is also known to triggers a shift of mitochondrial metabolism toward a more economical phenotype. Using several experimental studies, we will try to answer the following question: is change in energy coupling efficiency is truly beneficial or the ultimate mitochondrial adjustment to sustain life on “the razor blade”

Modelling connectivity at a regional scale during seasonal movements of the greater horseshoe bat

    No full text
International audienceContext : Connectivity modelling is a powerful tool for strengthening the link between landscape and species conservation. This approach often relies on expert knowledge of connectivity indicators or limited, small numbers and small‐scale monitoring data, for example during animal foraging activities. However, integrating larger scale movement data, including dispersal or seasonal movements, is crucial to making conservation relevant by covering the entire life cycle of species.Approach and methods : Using Resource Selection Function, the movement patterns of greater horseshoe bats (GHB) studied on a local scale were transposed to a regional scale to model the connectivity in western France. GHB is highly sensitive to loss of connectivity and makes seasonal regional migrations. How the local landscape heterogeneity influenced the conductance parameters estimation for modelling was examined using the gap‐crossing method at four different sites with variable landscape composition. The inferred parameters were used to create a regional connectivity map based on circuit theory. To validate this map, acoustic monitoring was conducted during the autumn migration to assess its effectiveness in identifying connectivity gradients. Finally, the resulting connectivity map was superimposed on the Natura 2000 network. Results : First, it can be assumed that connectivity parameters are identical whatever the landscape context. Second, the regional connectivity model identified the main potential corridors connecting all the major sites in the region. Finally, based on acoustic sampling, the number of GHB in transit was significantly higher in areas of higher connectivity. In terms of overlap with conservation, the functional connectivity of the GHB has been variously addressed in the current Natura 2000 network, with an overall lack of representativeness.Policy implications : Studying pathways during high mobility periods is one of the main missing elements for effective conservation, particularly for small species such as bats. An acoustic, stratified sampling at both local and large scale provided sufficient spatial and temporal accuracy to model connectivity throughout the life cycle of bats. This framework can easily be applied to other bat species to improve our understanding of connectivity, in order to explicitly integrate this crucial aspect for highly mobile species into the protection network.

Complex interactions between the gut microbiota, pesticide contamination and physiological traits in grey partridges

    No full text
The intensification of agriculture in recent years, particularly through the massive use of pesticides and fertilizers, has caused a decline in biodiversity, specifically among farmland birds. Emerging research highlights the adverse effects of chronic and low-dose pesticide exposure, particularly on the gut microbiota, which is essential for host metabolism and immune health. Understanding how pesticides disrupt microbial diversity and physiological traits is thus critical to inform management and conservation strategies. This study examines the impact of pesticide contamination on the gut microbiota composition and physiological responses of captive-bred male grey partridges, a threatened species frequently exposed to pesticide cocktail residues through their habitat and diet. We detected residues of 27 pesticide molecules in the birds' blood, including fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides. Among the different microbial diversity metrics analysed, only bacterial richness was significantly affected by the interaction between pesticide load and body condition, with contrasting effects observed across different body condition groups. Furthermore, higher microbial diversity was positively associated with hematocrit levels, suggesting that microbial diversity may be related to the physiological health of birds. These findings highlight the complex relationship between pesticide exposure, gut microbiota, and host physiology, emphasizing the need for further research to understand these interactions in wildlife health

A Survey on Services Placement Algorithms in Integrated Cloud-Fog / Edge Computing

    No full text
International audienceThe evolution of computing paradigms, such as Fog and Edge, has led to the emergence of new applications that require a placement of services close to the end users. Optimal placement of such applications over network nodes is therefore an important issue in integrated Cloud-Fog/Edge computing environments. The service placement problem is challenging due to the complexity of such distributed systems, limited computing resources, placement constraints, global efficiency of the application and quality requirements for end users. This survey attempts to provide a comprehensive and structured presentation of services placement problem research in integrated Cloud-Fog/Edge. We propose a new classification of services placement problem approaches by adopting an algorithmic viewpoint and a breakdown into three categories: graph-based, heuristics and machine-learning approaches. We also provide an analysis and some discussions of the methods, and identify some future challenges and issues in the case of microservices. We hope that this survey will provide a better understanding of the solutions and directions taken by research on this important topic

    No full text

: The extreme flood of February 1904 on the River Charente (South-West, France): a forgotten flood?

    No full text

Bursts of brain erosion: seizures and age-dependent neurological vulnerability

    No full text
International audienceHypersynchronous and exaggerated neuronal firing, exemplified by epileptiform activity and seizures, are disruptors of brain function across acute and chronic neuropathological conditions. Here, we focus on how seizure activity, whether as a primary symptom or a secondary comorbid event within a complex pathological setting, adversely impacts neurological trajectories. We discuss experimental and clinical evidence illustrating the participation of neurodegenerative and senescence-like adaptations. Paroxysmal neuronal events, through bidirectional causality, are linked with immune and microvascular changes, disrupting cellular homeostasis and creating a feed-forward loop that intertwines with age-related frailty to deteriorate mental health. We emphasize the clinical significance of early detection of these brain vulnerabilities through biomarkers, monitoring neurodevelopmental risks in children, and tracking neurodegenerative disease progression in aging populations
