The surrounding landscape affects ecosystem multifunctionality in oilseed rape fields
International audienceDesigning agricultural landscapes that provide multiple ecosystem functions is an important goal for system resilience and future food security. Landscape composition and configuration play an important role in the conservation and distribution of organisms that provide ecosystem functions. They can therefore be fundamental factors for designing agroecological systems. However, little is known about how the landscape can improve ecosystem multifunctionality in arable cropland. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of landscape composition on multifunctionality and individual ecosystem functions in oilseed rape fields. Multifunctionality was estimated as the simultaneous expression of five ecosystem functions related to crop production (pollination, natural pest and weed control, organic matter decomposition and litter stabilisation) in 94 oilseed rape fields distributed along gradients of grassland, woody habitats and organic farming cover in the surrounding landscapes. We investigated the effect of landscape on multifunctionality and ecosystem functions using a GLM framework in which the spatial extent of the effects was estimated with the SILAND package. We found that the amount of oilseed rape improved average multifunctionality in oilseed rape fields, while the surrounding organic farming decreased it. On the contrary, we did not find any landscape effect on the threshold multifunctionality. The function‐by‐function analysis showed a quadratic effect of the surrounding oilseed rape and a positive effect of forest on both pollination and weed seed predation. Surrounding organic farming decreased weed seed predation but increased pollination and aphid predation. Semi‐natural habitats had contrasted effects on the aboveground functions, generally increasing pollination but decreasing weed and aphid predation rates. Synthesis and applications . Our findings suggest that diverse landscapes are required to ensure the simultaneous delivery of a bundle of ecosystem functions in oilseed rape fields. Altogether, our findings indicate that landscape management should not only promote different semi‐natural elements but also should target limitation of dilution effects. Such trade‐offs among landscape metrics for the provision of a bundle of services can lead to optimal scenarios: in our study site, for instance, an oilseed rape cover lower than 10% within a 600 m radius can improve multifunctionality in oilseed rape fields.
Geologic controls on gas hydrate accumulations and associated geohazards
International audienceGas hydrates and shallow gas are common hazards encountered during drilling. They also are important components of the global carbon cycle and a potential energy resource. Predicting the occurrence of gas and hydrates, particularly highly concentrated accumulations, is therefore important for scientific and safety purposes. Hydrates accumulate following principles that are analogous to conventional hydrocarbons: the hydrate system requires a gas source, migration pathways, a suitable reservoir, and a seal. Here, we apply the hydrate system framework to several high-concentration accumulations to demonstrate the geologic controls on the different aspects of the system and the overall propensity of certain locations to host abundant hydrate and gas. We find that a deep source of gas is typically required in these settings, even if the gas is all microbial. This gas may be highly pressured and can generate fractures that reach from the base of the hydrate stability zone to the seafloor. At the Cape Fear Slide offshore North Carolina, newly acquired high-resolution 2D multichannel seismic data show details of the association among gas, hydrates, gas venting, and slope failure. Overall our analysis demonstrates the importance of considering the site-specific details of the local hydrate system in any shallow hazard analysis

Hybridization in van der Waals Epitaxy of PtSe 2 /h-BN and PtSe 2 /Graphene Heterostructures
International audiencevan der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, which combine bidimensional materials of different properties, enable a range of quantum phenomena. Herein, we present a comparative study between the electronic properties of mono- and bilayer of platinum diselenide (PtSe2) grown on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and graphene substrates using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT), the electronic structure of PtSe2/graphene and PtSe2/h-BN vdW heterostructures is investigated in a systematic manner. In contrast to PtSe2/h-BN, the electronic structure of PtSe2/graphene reveals the presence of interlayer hybridization between PtSe2 and graphene, which is evidenced by minigap openings in the π-band of graphene. Furthermore, our measurements show that the valence band maximum (VBM) of monolayer PtSe2 is located at the Γ point with different binding energies of about −0.9 and −0.55 eV relative to the Fermi level on h-BN and graphene and substrates, respectively. Our results represent a significant advance in the understanding of electronic hybridization between TMDs and different substrates, and they reaffirm the crucial role of the substrate in any nanoelectronic applications based on van der Waals heterostructures
Templex for Lagrangian dynamics in the Southwestern Atlantic
International audienceThis work presents the first application of the templex approach to observational datasets, using Lagrangian trajectories obtained from satellite altimetry in the ocean. The templex is a recent topological construct that extends classical ideas from template theory to higher-dimensional systems. Unlike other methods in Topological Data Analysis, which lack flow information, a templex encodes both the structure of phase space through a BraMAH cell complex and the organization of flow cycles upon it through a directed graph defined on its highest-dimensional cells. As shown in earlier works, the description of flows in phase space indirectly enables a description of fluid flows in physical space, since particles sharing the same dynamics are known to move coherently. Particle sets in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean are analyzed, revealing that the Lagrangian finite-time dynamics in this region can be related to those produced by a nonautonomous meandering jet model. We distinguished non-mixing (regular) islands from the chaotic sea. The results are also compared to those obtained from metric methods describing material transport in fluid flows and to the spatial organization of chlorophyll-a concentration. The seasonal variability of chaotic dynamics is also discussed
Evolution Mechanisms of an Artificial Calco-Magnesian Agglomerate in Seawater: Analysis of Powder by Experiments and Numerical Modeling
International audienceThe aim of this work was to investigate the evolutionary mechanisms of an artificial sedimentary agglomerate formed by cathodic polarization in natural seawater during its abandonment to a natural environment. Previous studies indicate that the mineralogical evolution of the material is controlled by kinetic factors and/or the local precipitation of aragonite on the brucite surface. However, the observation of the precipitation of metastable phase precipitation during the initial immersion of this material (in powder form) has suggested the possibility of a more complex mechanism. The present study builds upon previous experimental work and includes thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectrometry. The results are analyzed using numerical experimentation to evaluate the proposed hypotheses. Findings show that the transformation mechanism is characterized by the precipitation of metastable calcium carbonate phases. Under supersaturation conditions, these hydrated phases form on the brucite surface, limiting the mineral’s contact with the solution. The subsequent transformation of these amorphous phases into aragonite further reduces brucite–solution interaction, which explains the persistence of brucite both in the residual powder after 120 h of immersion and in the consolidated material after more than 20 years of exposure to natural seawater
