The genetic structure of wild and cultivated Saccharina latissima populations across European coasts provides guidance for sustainable aquaculture, traceability, and conservation
International audienceKelp cultivation is expanding rapidly worldwide, although the aquaculture of Saccharina latissima (sugar kelp) in Europe remains in its early stages. However, major concerns have emerged about the potential impact of selected cultivars of the species on native populations of S. latissima which are already vulnerable to stressors including climate change. To address these concerns and support sustainable cultivation, it is essential to characterise genetic diversity and structure of wild kelp populations to monitor potential farm-to-wild gene flow. In this study we used 21 microsatellite loci to characterise the genetic structure of 24 natural and 3 farmed populations of S. latissima along European coasts. Results confirmed strong genetic differentiation between the northern and southern coasts, refining the boundaries between these two clusters compared to previous studies. Within each cluster, a clear genetic substructure was detected, with population differentiation being far more pronounced in the southern cluster. Cultivated sporophytes exhibited pedigrees that were all traced back to the local parent populations. Bayesian model-based structure analysis, discriminant analysis of principal components and assignment tests revealed no significant genetic differentiation between the farms and their wild populations. This indicates that farmed populations and neighbouring populations share the same gene pool, reflecting current cultivation practices. These findings contribute to understanding risks of gene flow between wild and farmed populations and demonstrate that strain traceability is feasible. Additionally, the study highlights the challenge European seaweed farmers face in securing reliable seedling stock, especially in the context of global change

International audienceMunicipal Archives of Brest keep the register of the workers booklets issued by the municipality between 1804 and 1826. Detaining a booklet is an obligation set on workers in 1803: the Consulate intends to re-establish strict control of the workforce. During the second half of the 18th century, this control had been reinforced but was then questioned by workers’ struggles at the beginning of the French Revolution. This register provides accurate and valued pieces of information on the work scene in Brest on the early 19th century. 2 800 employees are registered: we know their profession, their age, their birthplace, their employer, their physical features. This physical information reflects the identification practices’ development since the 18th century. The other indications allow us to know better Brest’s workers, at least some of them since certain categories do not figure in this register: non-qualified workers, female workers, as well as categories that come under other control systems, in particular the arsenal workers. The workers reported in this register are engaged in diverse activities and show various paths.
Strength and hygrothermal performance of low carbon insulation materials made of lime ternary binders and miscanthus particles: Miscrete
International audienceThis paper examines the strength and hygrothermal properties of a novel bio-based building material made of miscanthus particles and lime-based ternary binders. Six types of lime binders were studied, including combinations of calcic lime (C), calcic lime and natural hydraulic lime (CN), lime-GGBS (CNG), lime-fly ash (CNF), a blend of lime and ‘rapid-setting’ cement (CNCe), and formulated Tradical PF70 (FLA). Binder to aggregate (b/a) ratios of 1.5 and 2.0 were analysed. The addition of supplementary cementitious materials in CNG, CNF, and CNCe resulted in higher compressive strength values (fc) measured at 28 days and for 5 % strain under room curing conditions. Binding systems C and CN reached only 31.4 and 27.8 kPa, whereas CNF and CNCe systems achieved strength values of 37.2 and 60.5 kPa respectively, and FLA mixes achieved 207 kPa. Reducing b/a from 2.0 to 1.5 decreased the compressive strength from 207.8 to 206 kPa at 28 days and from 481.5 to 364.8 kPa at 90 days. A consistent dry thermal conductivity in the range of 0.067 – 0.081 W/m·K, a water vapour permeability of 2.32E-11–3.89E-11 kg/(m·s·Pa), and a water vapour resistance factor of 5.14–8.49 were measured. The material achieved moisture buffer values (MBV) of 2.06–2.25 g/(m2·%RH), and thus it can be classified as an ‘excellent’ humidity regulator according to NordTest classification
Trophic ecology of sooty albatross, segregating mechanisms from the congeneric light-mantled sooty albatross, and conservation implications
International audienceThe trophic ecology of the Endangered sooty albatross (SA, 4 populations) was investigated using the concept of isotopic niche as a proxy of the trophic niche, and its isotopic metrics were compared with those of the congeneric Near Threatened light-mantled sooty albatross (LMSA, 4 populations). Three features differentiated SA from LMSA. (1) Feather δ 13 C and δ 15 N values of chicks and breeding adults were overall higher in SA than LMSA. This translates to more northern foraging grounds in the former than the latter species, with SA favouring warmer subtropical waters and LMSA colder waters of the Southern Ocean where they feed in part on low trophic level prey (likely Antarctic krill) at high latitudes. (2) Interestingly, SA from the Atlantic (Gough Island) differentiate from SA of the Indian Ocean (Marion, Crozet and Amsterdam Islands) by adult birds foraging primarily within the Southern Ocean in a similar way as LMSA from South Georgia, Marion, Crozet and Kerguelen Islands. (3) Calculations of the trophic niche width at the population and individual levels showed that SA from the Indian Ocean are specialist populations, while Gough Island SA and the 4 LMSA populations are generalist populations that include both generalist and specialist individuals. Consequently, both the preferential use of warm waters and the narrow trophic niche width of SA from the southern Indian Ocean imply a higher risk for SA than LMSA of being killed by subtropical tuna longline fisheries and being negatively impacted by environmental changes. Conversely, the preferential use of cold waters together with a large trophic niche width of SA from Gough Island suggest fewer negative interactions with direct and indirect human activities
International audience• Research objectivesThis research examines the effect of visual complexity on the intention to use a mobile application designed to reduce one’s carbon footprint to encourage more virtuous mobility.• Methodology362 people took part in an experiment measuring the effect of the visual complexity of mobile application home pages on intention to use and intention to travel. A series of multiple comparisons, ANOVA analyses and a macro-process (88 model) were used to analyse the data collected.• ResultsThe main result of our research indicates that moderate visual complexity has a positive influence on the acceptability of a mobile application and on the intention to use soft mobility. Self-efficacy moderates this effect, suggesting that application users with a high sense of self-efficacy have no need for such an application, unlike those with a low sense of self-efficacy, for whom the application of the carbon footprint may reinforce their behavioural intentions.• Conceptual and managerial implicationsTo promote soft mobility using a mobile application, this article suggests striking a necessary balance between the simplicity and visual complexity of the information. These applications must go beyond the simple dissemination of information and adapt the information and its complexity to reinforce consumers’ sense of self-efficacy.• OriginalityThe influence of visual complexity on the acceptability of technologies remains a field of research little explored in the scientific literature. In addition, this research focuses on urban mobility, which is a central issue in the study of consumer behaviour, particularly because of its significant impact on CO2 emissions. Finally, this research highlights the mediating role of self-efficacy, underlining its importance in the field of responsible behaviour.
In this study, chronological reasoning was used with the aim, on the one hand, of defining the axes of progressive evolution and sophistication of the economy of the ransom of French captives, and on the other hand of perceiving the ruptures or the profound changes in his initial training. It is from this line of research that the historical and modern character of the exchanges between the actors involved in the redemption of French captives emerged, in turn resulting from long periods of evolution and sudden mutations. The demonstration of this thesis is thus structured in three stages of reflection. The first traces the slow construction of the economy of redemption through the status of the French captive and variations in captivity from the end of the Middle Ages.Secondly, the demonstration focuses on the specifically modern character of the negotiation of the release of these captives, with the use of certain rules, customs, or legal and financial instruments, resulting from the previously determined base.Thirdly, the aim was to study the qualitative change that this ransom economy has undergone by showing the density of the networks of intermediaries involved in the redemption and the growing contractualization of the payment of the ransom.
Migration and wintering strategies of a Eurasian Stone-curlew ( Burhinus oedicnemus ) continental population, and their conservation implications
International audienceThe Eurasian Stone-curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus) is a declining and threatened species, yet its migration and wintering strategies are little documented. Here, we used GPS trackers to collect accurate data on this species' migration routes, stopovers, flight altitude, and speed, and identified the wintering sites of 32 individuals from a western European population tracked between 2012 and 2020. In a comparison between individuals, we found that they used strikingly different migratory strategies, showing variability in wintering sites (Portugal, Spain, Morocco, or Algeria), stopovers (number, location, and duration), and migratory routes, despite the fact that they all belonged to the same breeding population. We also compared individual variability in migratory routes, migration timing, and wintering home range size, and found medium to high repeatability for most parameters. In contrast to many other migrant waders, spring migration in this species was not found to be shorter in duration than autumn migration. Our results provide insights into potential threats that may affect this species in the near future away from its breeding grounds, such as habitat quality or habitat loss in wintering areas because Iberian or Moroccan agriculture is changing very rapidly because of drought.
