THE ROLE OF MAIN MICROECONOMIC FACTORS ON THE STOCK PRICES OF SELECTED SWISS COMPANIES
This paper examines the role of main microeconomic factors on the stock prices of selected Swiss companies listed on the Six Swiss Exchange. Two basic theoretical approaches and interpretations of this relationship are frequently used. The efficient market hypothesis (Fama, 1970) assumes that stock prices already contain all the relevant information and the theory of arbitration (Ross, 1976, or Chen et al., 1986). The microeconomic factors are based on the financial situation in companies. Financial ratios, taken from the financial statements of the individual companies, are used for the analysis. In general, the study confirmed that profitability and debt ratios are the most important business factors from the prospective of impact on stock prices. The relationship between the observed variables is explored using panel regression analysis. The generalized method of moments for constructing a regression model is used. The sample period of the dataset is composed of annual data from 2006 to 2015
EXPANDING TAM AND INVESTIGATING THE FACTORS THAT EFFECTS ON CONSUMERS’ INTENTION TO ADOPT MOBILE BANKING
Purpose The main objective of this study is to expand the technology acceptance model (TAM) by examining the factors affecting the adoption of mobile banking services by the customers of Palestinian banks and to design a comprehensive model based on TAM and TPB and additional constructs. Design/methodology/approach This study used the quantitative approach with cross sectional research design and a questionnaire as a data tool. From the six big cities in Palestine, we surveyed 1000 banking consumers. The samples include different characteristics. For construct relationship analysis this study applied partial least squares (PLS). Findings The study framework provides a complete view of mobile banking services. This framework takes into consideration more determinants for prediction than other studies on the adoption of innovations. The results of using this model managed to clarify nearly 77.4 percent of the dependent variable (intention to adopt mobile banking service) variation. This is a much greater value than those of the previous studies. Moreover, this study found that the perceived risk has a negative effect on consumers’ intention to use mobile banking services. Attitude, facilitating conditions, perceived ease of use, website usability, and perceived trust were identified as the important variables that have a significant positive effect on the consumers’ intention to use mobile banking services in Palestine. Originality/value – the findings can be used by financial institutions and banks to enhance the usage rate of consumers’ adoption and to develop their strategies.
WHISTLEBLOWING AS A MECHANISM OF FRAUD RISK MANAGEMENT IN ECONOMIC PRACTICE
The phenomenon of fraud and abuse remains relevant, as evidenced not only by studies published in this area, but also by the measures taken by economic operators to reduce it. Whistleblowing is an increasingly common tool for detecting fraudulent activities. It involves informing the organization’s management or external entities of any ethically, fraudulently or corruptly motivated irregularities. The level of interest in whistleblowing among Polish market entities is relatively low, mainly due to the lack of appropriate organizational culture, which is influenced by both internal and external factors within which the company operates. An important barrier in the implementation of whistleblowing in economic structures are both the ethical and sociological aspects and the low level of trust of potential whistleblowers towards their personal security for disclosing information about the signs of a prohibited act. Therefore, this tool is not very popular due to the lack of safeguards under national law, as well as internal regulations of entities using it. The aim of the publication is to verify the extent to which the whistleblowing tool is used to counteract the risk of abuse by economic entities listed on the Polish Stock Exchange, covered by the WIG 30 Index.
CORPORATE BANKRUPTCY PREDICTION IN POLAND AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF FOREIGN EXPERIENCE
In highly developed countries, research in the field of bankruptcy risk prediction has been conducted for many years. For example, in the United States, which can be considered a pioneering country, the first publications appeared in the early twentieth century. In Poland, due to political and economic reasons, the interest in this issue dates back to the early 1990s. For this reason, this publication attempts to answer the following questions: 1) What is the level of advancement of the research into predicting bankruptcies of enterprises in Poland? 2) How does it compare to worldwide trends? Therefore, the main aim of this study is to present and evaluate the scientific achievements of Polish authors in the field of corporate bankruptcy prediction and compare them to global trends. Literature analysis was adopted as the research method and shows that initially in Poland only very simple tools were used to assess the risk of bankruptcy of enterprises. With time, however, advanced methods began to be introduced and new models included non-financial variables. Also, research on the selection of the samples was conducted. Currently, the level of research and applied tools do not differ from those used in highly developed countries
FISCAL INSTRUMENTS SUPPORTING FAMILIES IN POLAND IN THE YEARS 2004-2017
The main objective of the study was an attempt to describe the policy for supporting families with children in Poland in the years 2004-2017 in the context of traditional support instruments. The following research methods were used in the article: analysis of the literature on the subject and legal acts, analysis of statistical data and comparative analysis. The study uses statistical data from reports of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy. The study did not confirm the research hypothesis which says that in the analyzed period, tax preferences were the dominant instrument of support for families in Poland. Shifting the burden of family policy towards direct benefits is unlikely to increase the transparency of this policy. With the introduction of new family benefits at a high level, which are the subject of exemption from personal income tax, public spending made with the use of tax expenditures will also increase. The lack of detailed and cyclical reporting of this type of expenditure in Poland reduces the transparency of the family policy
THE PROBLEM OF ALTERNATIVE FINANCING SOURCE MANAGEMENT – THE EQUITY CROWDFUNDING CASE
The main objective of this paper is to analyze one of the alternative sources of financing - equity crowdfunding - from the point of view of managerial processes. Based on the case study analysis and the comparative analysis the problems and challenges of raising funds using equity crowdfunding are discussed, comparing the findings with the issuing of shares. The analysis show that although many of the activities undertaken in raising funds through issuing shares and equity crowdfunding are similar, the managerial processes in the case of equity crowdfunding require from the company first of all building and caring about relationships with investors, rather than showing and proving effectiveness. In exchange for the low legal requirements, the equity crowdfunding investors expect good communication even if the promises are not fulfilled
PROFIT REINVESTMENT: MAIN MOTIVES SUPPORTING FINANCIAL DECISIONS
Reinvestment decisions are based on basic the economic literacy of entrepreneurs because they do not want to affect future liquidity or development activities. The main goal of the article is to suggest a simple decision tree model to describe profit reinvestments in a general way based on results of a primary pilot study (128 interviews), where reinvestment behaviour is affected by specific factors like risk taking, competitive advantage or business experience. After that a decisionmaking tree is suggested to explain the process of reinvestment as determined by the manager
THE COLOR OF GOVERNMENT MONEY. DO INVESTORS DIFFERENTLY VALUE THE INVESTMENT OF SOVEREIGN WEALTH FUNDS?
The article aims at pointing out the differences in market reactions regarding the announcement of an investment of selected Sovereign Wealth Funds in companies listed on the London Stock Exchange. The research sample consists of 796 market transactions made by four selected Sovereign Wealth Funds. The author employed event study methodology to calculate the average abnormal returns and cumulative abnormal returns for each fund in subsamples. The empirical findings suggest that investors react differently to the information about a fund’s investment. To the best of the author’s knowledge, the literature does not provide any answer as to how the market reacts to information disclosure of individual funds. Therefore, this paper bridges the gap in the literature within this field.
A PUZZLE OF EXCESSIVE EQUITY RISK PREMIUM AND THE CASE OF POLAND
The arti cle presents a historical review of the literature related to the empirical problem of excessive risk premium. The risk premium (the diff erence between the return on equiti es and risk-free rate) observed in fi nancial markets cannot be reconciled with theoreti cal models of fi nancial markets – it is too high (“excessive”). We present the original model from the seminal work of Mehra and Prescott (1985), where this problem has been signaled. The arti cle gives an overview of the main trends in the literature concerning this problem, of the proposed soluti ons and of the extension to the model. Finally, we consider the problem in the Polish context, esti mati ng the original Mehra-Prescott model using data from the Polish fi nancial market.
FINANCIAL SECTOR TRANSFORMATION AND INCOME INEQUALITY– AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS
This paper examines the relationship between financial sector transformation and income inequality. We construct an econometric model of income concentration for a panel of 16 OECD countries in the years 1995-2009. From our study, financial sector transformation, measured individually by three indicators (GDP share of stock market value traded, bank income and private credit), emerges as a nexus of complex and interconnected phenomena, which are strongly associated with the concentration of income at the top of the distribution.
