Is Utah the Most Sexist State? No
This paper critically examines the claim that Utah is “the most sexist state” in the United States, as suggested by a WalletHub report ranking it lowest in “Women’s Equality.” Utilizing an economic analysis from the Austrian School perspective, this study scrutinizes the data, metrics, and conclusions of reports by the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP). The analysis focuses on distinguishing statistical disparities from sexism, proposing that observed gender inequalities in Utah are largely influenced by cultural and economic factors, particularly the state’s high marriage rate and traditional gender roles. Contrary to the notion that sexism predominantly drives gender disparities, the paper argues that personal choices and subjective value theory play significant roles in shaping these outcomes. The study highlights the importance of considering cultural context, individual preferences, and the marital asymmetry hypothesis when interpreting gender-related data, challenging the assertion that Utah’s gender disparities are primarily due to sexist attitudes. The findings suggest that Utah’s gender gaps in areas such as income and workforce participation are more accurately attributed to the state’s unique cultural and economic landscape rather than pervasive sexism
Feminist Film Theory: The Impact of Female Representation in Modern Movies
In contemporary American cinema, the representation of women remains disproportionately limited despite significant social movements advocating for diversity and equality. This study examines the depiction of women in top-grossing films of 2018, contrasting those directed by men with those directed by women, to understand the influence of gender dynamics on cinematic portrayal. Analyzing the top five highest-grossing live-action movies directed by each gender, this research utilizes critical mass and critical actor theories to evaluate the impact of female filmmakers on the representation of women both on and off-screen. Findings reveal that films directed by women feature higher percentages of female characters and crew members in key roles, yet face substantial budgetary and box office disparities compared to their male-directed counterparts. Despite some progress, the film industry continues to exhibit systemic biases, necessitating further structural changes to achieve genuine gender equality in cinematic storytelling. This study underscores the need for increased opportunities and resources for female filmmakers to foster a more inclusive and diverse cinematic landscape
THE ROLE OF OWNERSHIP IN SHAPING ONLINE NEWS CONTENT: A POLITICAL ECONOMY ANALYSIS
There is a correlation between the ownership of media outlets and the selection of news contentin Bangladesh because of the growth of online media. This study examines the ownership and media content of www.prothomalo.com, the most prominent online news portal in Bangladesh. The analysis was conducted using a qualitative approach and in-depth interviews. Four important elements are discussed: the ownership pattern and their reasons for investing in this sector; the corporate relationship between the business firms and www.prothomalo.com; news content categories and their presentation on www.prothomalo.com; and cited sources on www.prothomalo.com. The findings suggest that the ownership of online media outlets by corporate conglomerates raises concerns regarding the independence, objectivity and restricts the diversity of online news in Bangladesh
Navigating the Digital Frontier: Examining Social Media’s Influence on Print Media News Coverage
This study examines the influence of social media on print media news coverage, focusing on integrating social media content into print news production, distribution, and consumption. The research highlights how social media has become a significant source of print media, leading to changes in how news is produced and disseminated. The findings indicate a marked shift in print media’s approach, incorporating social media elements such as quotes and trends, which enhances the breadth of news coverage and public engagement. Social media platforms are now pivotal in news distribution, broadening the reach of print media. The study also observes changes in news consumption patterns influenced by social media algorithms, resulting in more personalized and fragmented news experiences. Overall, social media has reshaped the print media landscape, compelling print outlets to adapt and integrate digital tools to maintain relevance in a transformed media environment
ESG VOLATILITY PREDICTION USING GARCH AND LSTM MODELS
This study aims to predict the ESG (environmental, social, and governance) return volatilitybased on ESG index data from 26 October 2017 and 31 March 2023 in the case of India. In thisstudy, we utilized GARCH (Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity) and LSTM(Long Short-Term Memory) models for forecasting the return of ESG volatility and to evaluatethe model’s suitability for prediction. The study's findings demonstrate the GARCH effect insidethe ESG return volatility data, indicating the occurrence of volatility in response to market fluctuations. This study provides insight concerning the suitability of models for volatility predictions. Moreover, based on the analysis of the return volatility of the ESG index, the GARCH model ismore appropriate than the LSTM model
CASHLESS PAYMENT SYSTEM AND COVID-19 ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC
The paper deals with cashless payments during the pandemic situation caused by Covid-19. The aim of the paper will be to use the method of analysis and comparison of selected data to answer the following research question: Has the pandemic caused by Covid-19 contributed to increasing the share of non-cash payments? The authors base their research on the hypothesis that "the pandemic period had a significant impact on the development of cashless payments". From the performed research, the authors came to the conclusion that based on the methods used, the established hypothesis was not confirmed and the answer to the research question had to be given in the negative.
HOUSEHOLD FUEL CHOICE IN URBAN KENYA: A MULTINOMIAL LOGIT ANALYSIS
This study applied a logistic regression model to determine the odds ratio of selecting clean versus unclean energy as the main household fuel choice. This study also undertook to establish the coefficients of the factors determining household fuel energy choice. A large microeconomic dataset from KIPPRA’s comprehensive study and analysis on fuel use patterns in Kenya (2010) was employed to carry out the analysis. This study employed a multinomial logit regression model to determine the fuel choices and patterns of cooking fuels in urban Kenyan households. The results showed that in addition to income, there are several socio-demographic factors such as education, gender, and age that were important in determining household fuel choice. To encourage clean fuel use, the authorities should carry out public education campaigns, and ensure the availability of these fuels in all areas to avoid harmful effects of biomass fuels and kerosene, and more modern and efficient appliances should be made available at affordable rates to ensure more efficient use of these forms of clean energy.
FISCAL POLICY BEFORE AND DURING COVID-19 AND ITS IMPACT ON THE CREATION OF NEW COMPANIES
The article analyses relationships between fiscalism indicators and the number of newly registered companies (i.e. a new business density index). The study covered the period from 2015 to 2020 (inclusive). Considering the timeframe, the purpose is to determine the impact of COVID-19 on new firm formation. Two principal research hypotheses are formulated. The first hypothesis assumes a negative impact of fiscal burden on the creation of new firms. The second hypothesis assumes that COVID-19 reduced interest in starting new business entities. The research results demonstrate that there is a negative relationship between fiscalism and new firm formation. Contrary to expectations, the research has shown that COVID-19 did not adversely affect the creation of new companies, as the new business density index remained stable in most of the analyzed countries
VALUE OF BRANDED EDUCATION
The objective of the paper is to examine value creation in private higher education. The results of the research are to be applied in reasonable structuring of study programs and courses and for creating profitable business and marketing strategies for private universities. From a student perspective, higher education is a project that must generate a positive net present value. In the pre-investment and investment phases, students see cash outflows and opportunity costs. In the third phase, the project generates benefits that take the form of cash inflows from employment or doing business in the relevant field. The value of the study program from the perspective of a private university is produced by the present value of the future cash flows generated by the investment in the study program and its administration and operation. The main cash inflows are created by tuition revenues and the main cash outflows are brand-related investments and personnel costs. The market equilibrium occurs when the value of a degree program from the perspective of a private university corresponds to the total aggregate net present value of a degree program at a private university from a student perspective.
THE IMPACT OF CRISES ON THE INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL OF COMPANIES IN THE FOOD SECTOR
Both the financial crisis of the first decade of the 21st century, as well as the deterioration of trade relations between the European Union and the Russian Federation were events that significantly affected the functioning of the largest listed companies on the food market: on the one hand, aggravating the conditions of economic functioning, on the other hand creating a stimulus to seek new innovative solutions to help companies survive on the market. The aim of the work was to present the impact of crises on the intellectual capital of WIG-Food index companies, which is an indirect measure of innovation. The MV/BV and q-Tobin index were used for the study, as well as selected quantitative methods: multiple regression, Ward’s method and seasonal additive decomposition. The results of the work indicate that the companies are divided into two groups, within which similar trends in shaping intellectual capital are observed. In addition, one of the groups clearly noticed the impact of the financial crisis and the introduction of an embargo on the shaping of intellectual capital.
