Resilience and Suicidality Among Suicidal Soldiers
No full textSuicide attempts and deaths by suicide have been growing over the past several decades, despite increased research focused on predicting and preventing suicide (Nock et al., 2008). Further, while service members in the United States Military have traditionally shown a lower suicide rate than civilians, incidence of suicide among these individuals has recently surpassed the general population (Ursano et al., 2015). Accordingly, it is clear there is significant need for improvement in the prevention of suicidality, particularly among service members. To this end, better understanding resiliency and its potential impact shows promise in furthering efforts to predict and prevent suicide (Cheavens et al., 2016). The primary purpose of the current study was to examine the role of resilience in predicting suicidality among Soldiers in the year after they received suicide-focused treatment due to acute suicidality. Further, resilience was explored in this study as both a more general construct (i.e., Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Connor & Davidson, 2003) and a more specific discrete variable (i.e., reasons for living). Follow-up suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior were found to be significantly impacted by resilience, with meaningful differences between how the general and discrete indicators of resilience impacted outcomes. Accordingly, this research provides evidence that assessing resilience in suicidal individuals may be important in effectively predicting who may be expected to recover in outpatient suicide-focused care and who may require more prolonged and intensive intervention.Clinical psychologyMental healthCAMS, Military, Resilience, SuicidePsychologyDegree Awarded: Ph.D. Psychology. No full textThis is the first session of a life history interview with Cosby Hunt, a career educator, native Washingtonian, and creator of Real World History at the Center for Inspired Teaching. In this interview Cosby Hunt reflects on this his family background, his parent’s lives, and his early life in Washington, D.C., in the 1970s and 1980s.Isaac Cosby Hunt, born December 12 1971, is a high school history teacher in Washington, D.C., and a native Washingtonian. Cosby is the only child of Isaac 'Ike' Cosby Hunt Jr. and Elizabeth 'Betty' Dollie Hunt. Cosby grew up in the Hawthorne neighborhood of D.C. and attended Lafayette Elementary School and St. Albans School before graduating from University of Pennsylvania. Upon completing his undergraduate degree, Cosby began his career as an educator by joining Teach for America (TFA). Cosby taught for two years at his TFA placement in Hancock County, Georgia, before enrolling in a graduate education program at the University of Georgia. After receiving his master's degree, Cosby returned to Washington, D.C., to become a public school teacher and taught at Bell Multicultural High School (now CHEC - Columbia Heights Education Campus) for 13 years before leaving to work for Center for Inspired Teaching, an educational non-profit with a focus on innovative teacher training. After several years of working with teachers, Cosby began teaching a city-wide history course called Real World History, a program he developed for Inspired Teaching youth programs, which was piloted in SY 2014-2015. In SY 2019-2020, Cosby returned to full-time classroom teaching and began working at Thurgood Marshall Academy in Anacostia
