A new spin on an old debate: Errors in farmer-reported production and their implications for inverse scale - productivity relationship in Uganda
Published in: Journal of Development Economics, Volume 141, November 2019, 102376.Based on a two-round household panel survey conducted in Eastern Uganda, this study shows that the analysis of the
inverse scale-productivity relationship (IR) is highly sensitive to how plot-level maize production is measured. While
farmer-reported production-based plot-level maize yield regressions consistently lend support to the IR, the com-
parable regressions estimated with maize yields based on sub-plot crop cutting, full-plot crop cutting, and remote
sensing point towards constant returns to scale, at the mean as well as throughout the distributions. In deriving the
much-debated coefficient for GPS-based plot area, the maize yield regressions control for objective measures of soil
fertility and edge effects at the plot-level, as well as time-invariant household- and parcel-level unobserved hetero-
geneity in select specifications. The core finding appears to be driven by over-estimation of farmer-reported maize
production vis-a-vis their crop cutting-based counterparts, particularly in the lower half of the plot area distribution

Philosophy of biology: seizing an opportunity
Published in: eLife 2019; 8:e48336.As the techniques available to neuroscientists to probe the inner workings of the brain become more powerful, the volume of data generated increases exponentially and the tools used to analyze these data become ever more sophisticated. Alongside this feverish press into the future comes a growing interest in the use of new data technologies to study old literary and philosophical texts. And as researchers develop new methods to unearth patterns hidden within complex data, it is natural to think of these old texts as simply more data reflecting the intricacies of the human mind, waiting to succumb to the powerful, objective, and reliable perception of machines. Here we argue that historical texts are more than prone booty to be exploited: rather, they offer researchers in neuroscience, philosophy, and literature the opportunity to work together, to learn from and enrich each other’s methodologies. Using the study of human curiosity as an illustration, we describe our vision for a collaborative approach to exploring the mysteries of the mind and human behavior
2010-19 Reducing Vulnerability through Microfinance: Assessing the Impact of Self Help Groups In India
Department of Economics, Working Paper Series, no. 2010-19. 42 pages. We investigate if participation in Indian Self Help Group microfinance program (SHG) results in reducing vulnerability. Using theSHG rural household survey data collected in 2003, we examine the poverty and vulnerability profiles of SHG and non-SHG rural, low-income household members. Our construction of the vulnerability is based on a methodology that allows for the estimation of household vulnerability using cross-sectional survey data. We use propensity score matching to eliminate the potential selection bias that may arise due to unobservable attributes. We empirically examine the current poverty and vulnerability status of households in SHG and non-SHG groups. We match the treated and comparison groups on the basis of their propensity scores to correct for selection bias and then estimate the average treatment on treated effect using nearest neighbour matching and local linear regression algorithm. To check the robustness of the results, we perform sensitivity analysis and estimate Rosenbaum‟s bounds. Our empirical results show that despite a disproportionately high percentage of poor in the SHG members, vulnerability is not significantly different between the SHG and non-SHG members
Regina Chow McPhie Interview, January 26, 2020
Native Washingtonian Regina Chow McPhie discusses her family history in DC's Chinatown and reflects on the necessity of perserving Chinese heritage in the area. She talks about how her family was involved in Chinatown from its earliest days, and how her grandfather helped start the Lee Family Association. She says that her grandfather and other immigrants were relegated to domestic work, such as the laundry business, due to racial discrimination and a hatred of the Chinese. Regina talks about how Chinatown has significantly diminished. She remembers visiting Chinatown and connecting with thousands of other Chinese in the 60s and 70s, whereas now only about 300 Chinese live in the area. While she admires the DC government's efforts to preserve Chinatown, she thinks they can do more, perhaps with money collected from parking tickets. She says now that Chinatown is struggling to exist. Regina sees a dichotomy between the older and younger generations in terms of the importance of preserving heritage. She views this as extremely important: "if you don't have your heritage, you don't have your history. You don't exist.
