    The Max Peterson Oral History Project is a companion project to the Center for Inspired Teaching 'Real World History' Oral History Project. This project includes interviews with Cosby Hunt, a native Washingtonian and creator of the Real World History Class, and Ms. Edith Crutchfield, a long-time D.C. resident who moved to Washington from Culpeper, Virginia, in 1953. Ms. Crutchfield first became involved with Real World History when she collaborated on an oral history project with a student in the fall of 2018. Ms. Edith’s interview from Real World History can be found in the Center for Inspired Teaching 'Real World History' Oral History Project. The interviews in this collection, of both Mr. Hunt and Ms. Crutchfield, take a life history approach in which the interviewees discuss some of their life experiences beginning with their early life. Over the course of several interviews, Mr. Hunt discusses his upbringing in Washington, his career as a high school history teacher, and the development of the Real World History Class; Ms. Edith discusses her upbringing in Culpeper, her move to Washington in 1953, and her life and career in the District. Max Peterson is an educator at The Center for Inspired Teaching and has been co-teacher of Real World History since 2017. Mr. Peterson completed these interviews in connection to his thesis work for Columbia University's Oral History Master of Arts program

    Nuclear physics aims at understanding structure of the building blocks of the atom, the protons and neutrons in terms of their constituents, the quarks and gluons. Traditionally, this was accomplished through studies of their static properties and the underlying one-dimensional quark and gluon momentum distributions. Over the last few decades, realization has grown that the true study of the proton dynamical structure has to come from more exclusive reactions. These deep exclusive processes describe a subset of unique inelastic processes in which all particles in their final state are detected. Such processes can allow access to Generalized Parton Distributions, or GPDs, a conceptual mechanism that lies at the root of three-dimensional spatial imaging of the proton’s quark-gluon substructure. In particular, photon electroproduction as well as meson electroproduction are two kinds of deep inelastic processes that can allow access to GPDs. Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) is a type of deep inelastic process, and is known as one of the cleanest ways to access GPDs. Experimentally, this is known as photon electroproduction or ep&rarr;e'p&gamma;, as the scattering of electrons is used as the source of virtual photons. DVCS cross sections and polarized asymmetries can provide detailed and precise information about GPDs, but are sensitive only to a particular flavor combination. GPDs encode the structure of the nucleon regardless of the probe and the reaction that is being used as a tool and technique of probing. As a consequence, GPDs are called universal quantities, and in addition to DVCS, they are also accessible through hard electroproduction of mesons or Deeply Virtual Meson Production (DVMP). The quantum numbers of the meson in the final state make it possible to probe and separate the contributions from different GPDs, which allows for the flavor decomposition of the underlying GPDs. The first and second generations of DVCS experiments took place during the 6 GeV era at Jefferson Lab, Newport News, VA and showed the importance of precise measurements of photon and neutral pion electroproduction cross sections. The third generation of DVCS experiments (DVCS-3), explore a wider kinematic domain including Q2 (photon virtuality) measurements ranging from 2.7 to 8.3 GeV2, and fixed x-Bjorken (xB) from 0.3 to 0.6. High statistical measurements of polarized and unpolarized cross sections of H(e,e'&pi;0)p could allow mapping and extraction of GPD information from the nucleon. If the longitudinal part of the cross section does indeed dominate the total cross section, access to transversity GPDs, would be feasible. The experimental setup of the DVCS-3 experiment utilized one high resolution focusing spectrometer in Hall A of JLab for electron detection and an electromagnetic PbF2 Calorimeter for photon and &pi;0 detection. The differential cross sections of exclusive &pi;0 production were extracted in the valence region at three different values of xB (0.36, 0.48, 0.60) for values of Q2 from 2.7 to 8.3 GeV2.     In this oral history interview, Clarence Haywood, a long time D.C. resident, discusses his life and experiences moving from Camilla, Georgia, to Washington, D.C. Deacon Haywood talks about his upbringing and family life in Camilla, Georgia, race relations in Camilla, and how he came to the D.C. region after serving in the Navy. He also discusses his life in Washington, his 40-year career as a nurse, cultural differences between the D.C. region and the South, and how D.C. has changed since he first moved to the region.Deacon Clarence Haywood was born in 1947 in Camilla, Georgia, and he grew up with his mother, grandparents, and three younger siblings (two brothers and a sister). For a time they stayed with their father in Atlanta, GA, but they soon returned to Camilla to live with his mother’s parents because of issues between his parents. His grandfather, Roy Caesar, was a well-known farmer in Mitchell County, Georgia, and his grandmother was a registered nurse in Camilla. His mother worked in a factory, but she was often battling illness and worked less hours than many of her colleagues. After graduating high school in 1965, Deacon Haywood served in the US Navy for four years. Upon leaving the service, he settled in D.C. and began working at the National Institute of Health (NIH) as a hospital corpsman. He had never visited to D.C. before, and he was the first of his family to migrate north. NIH then paid for him to attend Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, and become a registered nurse. Upon graduating in 1975, he began a forty-year career in nursing. Deacon Haywood has been a deacon at New Bethel Church of God in Christ in Takoma Park, D.C., for over three decades
