LEE MILLER’S “HITLERIANA” AND THE VISUAL CULTURE OF WAR-TIME ENGLAND
Throughout World War II, American photographer Lee Miller (1907-1977) served as a war correspondent for Condé Nast. As she followed the 273rd infantry regiment of the 45th division of the United States Army, Miller published photo essays in American, British, and French Vogue. On April 30, 1945, the day that Hitler killed himself in a Berlin bunker, Miller and her partner, Dave Scherman, found themselves in his Munich apartment. Miller proceeded to photograph some of his belongings, and she and Scherman staged a photograph in the deceased chancellor’s bathroom. This thesis examines the resulting photospread, “Hitleriana,” which was published in the July 1945 issue of British Vogue. Scholars have attended to one of the photographs in the spread, Lee Miller in Hitler’s Bath (1945), and argued that it speaks to Miller’s recent harrowing experience covering the liberation of Nazi concentration camps, her time as a photojournalist, and her interest in Surrealism. Rather than approaching this one photograph biographically, my thesis explains how and why the spread as whole, including Lee Miller in Hitler’s Bath, responds to the visual culture of the Third Reich and of Hitler in particular. Reading the photographs in relation to one another, to the essay that accompanied them, and to the visual culture of World War II more broadly, this thesis argues that the spread worked to counteract more traditional depictions of Adolf Hitler. Official Nazi imagery and popular film depicted Hitler as a larger than life, mythic figure. Economic costs and benefits of community-based lymphedema-management programs for lymphatic filariasis in India
American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Volume 103, Issue 1, July 2020, Pages 295-302.Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is endemic in 72 countries; 15 million persons live with chronic filarial lymphedema. It can be a disabling condition, frequently painful, leading to reduced mobility, social exclusion, and depression. The Global Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis aims to stop new infections and care for affected persons, but morbidity management has been initiated in only 38 countries. We examine economic costs and benefits of alleviating chronic lymphedema and its effects through simple limb care. We use economic and epidemiological data from 12 Indian states in which 99% of Indians with filariasis reside. Using census data, we calculate the age distribution of filarial lymphedema and predict the burden of morbidity of infected persons. We estimate lifetime medical costs and lost earnings due to lymphedema and acute dermatolymphangioadenitis (ADLA) with and without community-based limb-care programs. Programs of community-based limb care in all Indian endemic areas would reduce costs of disability by 52%, saving a per person average of US$2,721, equivalent to 703 workdays. Per-person savings are 185 times the program’s per-person cost. Chronic lymphedema and ADLA impose a substantial physical and economic burden in filariasis-endemic areas. Low-cost programs for lymphedema management based on limb washing and topical medication are effective in reducing the number of ADLA episodes and stopping progression of disabling lymphedema. With reduced disability, people can work longer hours per day, more days per year, and in more strenuous, higher paying jobs, resulting in important economic benefits to themselves, their families, and their communities
Auditory processing of speech and tones in children with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex
Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience, Volume 14, 9 April 2020, Article number 14.Individuals with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) have atypical white matter integrity and neural connectivity in the brain, including language pathways. To explore functional activity associated with auditory and language processing in individuals with TSC, we used electroencephalography (EEG) to examine basic auditory correlates of detection (P1, N2, N4) and discrimination (mismatch negativity, MMN) of speech and non-speech stimuli for children with TSC and age- and sex-matched typically developing (TD) children. Children with TSC (TSC group) and without TSC (typically developing, TD group) participated in an auditory MMN paradigm containing two blocks of vowels (/a/and/u/) and two blocks of tones (800 Hz and 400 Hz). Continuous EEG data were collected. Multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) was used to explore functional specificity of neural auditory processing. Speech-specific P1, N2, and N4 waveform components of the auditory evoked potential (AEP) were compared, and the mismatch response was calculated for both speech and tones. MVPA showed that the TD group, but not the TSC group, demonstrated above-chance pairwise decoding between speech and tones. The AEP component analysis suggested that while the TD group had an increased P1 amplitude in response to vowels compared to tones, the TSC group did not show this enhanced response to vowels. Additionally, the TD group had a greater N2 amplitude in response to vowels, but not tones, compared to the TSC group. The TSC group also demonstrated a longer N4 latency to vowels compared to tones, which was not seen in the TD group. No group differences were observed in the MMN response. In this study we identified features of the auditory response to speech sounds, but not acoustically matched tones, which differentiate children with TSC from TD children

International governance of climate engineering: a survey of reports on climate engineering, 2009-2015

This paper also surveys those reports with a view to helping readers understand each report’s distinctive features and major recommendations regarding CE governance

Identification of a DNA N6-Adenine Methyltransferase complex and its impact on Chromatin organization
Cell, Volume 177, Issue 7, 13 June 2019, Pages 1781-1796.e25.DNA N6-adenine methylation (6mA) has recently been described in diverse eukaryotes, spanning unicellular organisms to metazoa. Here, we report a DNA 6mA methyltransferase complex in ciliates, termed MTA1c. It consists of two MT-A70 proteins and two homeobox-like DNA-binding proteins and specifically methylates dsDNA. Disruption of the catalytic subunit, MTA1, in the ciliate Oxytricha leads to genome-wide loss of 6mA and abolishment of the consensus ApT dimethylated motif. Mutants fail to complete the sexual cycle, which normally coincides with peak MTA1 expression. We investigate the impact of 6mA on nucleosome occupancy in vitro by reconstructing complete, full-length Oxytricha chromosomes harboring 6mA in native or ectopic positions. We show that 6mA directly disfavors nucleosomes in vitro in a local, quantitative manner, independent of DNA sequence. Furthermore, the chromatin remodeler ACF can overcome this effect. Our study identifies a diverged DNA N6-adenine methyltransferase and defines the role of 6mA in chromatin organization
