A zoonotic adenoviral human pathogen emerged through genomic recombination among human and nonhuman simian hosts

    No full text
Journal of Virology, Volume 93, Issue 18, 1 September 2019, Article number e00564-19.Genomics analysis of a historically intriguing and predicted emergent human adenovirus (HAdV) pathogen, which caused pneumonia and death, provides insight into a novel molecular evolution pathway involving “ping-pong” zoonosis and anthroponosis. The genome of this promiscuous pathogen is embedded with evidence of unprecedented multiple, multidirectional, stable, and reciprocal cross-species infections of hosts from three species (human, chimpanzee, and bonobo). This recombinant genome, typed as HAdV-B76, is identical to two recently reported simian AdV (SAdV) genomes isolated from chimpanzees and bonobos. Additionally, the presence of a critical adenoviral replication element found in HAdV genomes, in addition to genes that are highly similar to counterparts in other HAdVs, reinforces its potential as a human pathogen. Reservoirs in nonhuman hosts may explain periods of apparent absence and then reemergence of human adenoviral pathogens, as well as present pathways for the genesis of those thought to be newly emergent. The nature of the HAdV-D76 genome has implications for the use of SAdVs as gene delivery vectors in human gene therapy and vaccines, selected to avoid preexisting and potentially fatal host immune responses to HAdV. IMPORTANCE An emergent adenoviral human pathogen, HAdV-B76, associated with a fatality in 1965, shows a remarkable degree of genome identity with two recently isolated simian adenoviruses that contain cross-species genome recombination events from three hosts: human, chimpanzee, and bonobo. Zoonosis (nonhuman-to-human transmission) and anthroponosis (human to nonhuman transmission) may play significant roles in the emergence of human adenoviral pathogens

The health of undocumented latinx immigrants: what we know and future directions

    No full text
Annual Review of Public Health, Volume 41, 1 April 2019, Pages 289-308.Undocumented Latinx immigrants experience unique factors prior to migration, during migration, and after migration that shape their health. Our review summarizes the limited but growing literature highlighting how exposure to trauma, immigration enforcement, changes to social networks, and discrimination negatively affect the mental and physical health of undocumented Latinx immigrants. We also discuss how policies and social ties can promote their health. We focus on areas of particular concern, including health care, mental health, and HIV. Future research should use interdisciplinary approaches and intersectional frameworks to understand and address health inequities. Conducting research with undocumented Latinx immigrant communities requires community engagement, assurance of confidentiality, and creative recruitment and retention strategies. Recommendations for public health practice include investing in community health centers and organizations to ensure access to health and social services; presenting results with sufficient contextualization to interpret their generalizability; and advocating for federal-, state-, and local-level policy changes that reduce the negative health consequences associated with being undocumented

Emotional Skillfulness within a Positive Marital Context and the Influence on Marital Satisfaction

    No full text
The understanding of marital functioning has largely focused on marital conflict compared to positive marital contexts. The present study addresses the gap in the understanding of marital processes within positive marital interactions and the impact on marital and child outcomes. Data were drawn from a large three-year longitudinal study and included 201 families. Husbands’ and wives’ emotional skillfulness within a positive marital interaction was captured using an observational coding system that was adapted to use with positive marital interactions for the present study. Further, the construct of emotional skillfulness and its role within a marriage was investigated using multiple approaches including structural equation modeling, latent class growth analysis, and dyadic latent growth curve modeling. The role of husbands’ and wives’ depressive symptoms were investigated in relation to direct effects on emotional skillfulness and moderating effects of one’s partners’ emotional skillfulness on one’s own marital functioning. Results indicated that husbands’ emotional skillfulness in a positive marital context had a direct positive impact on their own report of positive marital qualities. Emotional skillfulness was not found to directly impact any other marital or child outcome. Wives’ depressive symptoms negatively impacted their own emotional skillfulness, but this was not found for husbands and depressive symptoms did not moderate the relationship between emotional skillfulness and marital outcomes. Husbands and wives were separately classified into two distinct trajectories of marital satisfaction, but the models did not converge when emotional skillfulness was added as a predictor of trajectory membership. Lastly, results of the dyadic latent growth curve analysis indicated that wives’ emotional skillfulness declined over time, but husbands’ emotional skillfulness remained stable over time. Further, husbands showed significant variability in their initial levels of emotional skillfulness, but wives did not. Overall, the present study provides insight into the role of emotional skillfulness within a positive marital context, indicating limited or no impact on marital and child outcomes.PsychologyPsychologyDegree Awarded: Ph.D. Psychology. Congolese Intellectuals and State Power: The Case of Les Combattants

    No full text
ABSTRACT As an examination of how Congolese intellectuals resist political power, this dissertation studies Les Combattants, a Congolese diaspora network operating primarily in Europe and North America. Vehemently opposed to Joseph Kabila’s administration, Les Combattants launched a series of post-electoral protests in 2011. Though African diasporas have increased their political activism since the end of the Cold War, their strategies and political motivations have not been sufficiently studied. Likewise, research has not thoroughly studied the role of Congolese diaspora and intellectuals in Congolese politics. This is why, in an effort toward a social theory of Congolese intellectuals and as a means for studying Les Combattants, I propose four categories by which Congolese intellectuals interact with political power: 1) entrists seek to control political power, 2) attentists wait for favorable prerequisites to participate in politics, 3) escapists focus on international distribution of power, and 4) pragmatists address polities’ concerns from the bottom-up. I used interviews, online resources, and literature review to conduct a discourse analysis of Les Combattants’ 2011 post-electoral protests. I found the following: 1) Les Combattants’ articulation of grievances against Joseph Kabila, Rwanda, and the international community contains considerable instabilities; 2) their discourse could not significantly mobilize international and domestic support, largely because it conceived political change as the result of top-down international processes; and 3) the political categories Les Combattants proposed are primarily denunciative, unable to convincingly prescribe political transformation. Furthermore, this dissertation concludes that, due to the history of political socialization, Congolese intellectuals who pursue top-down reforms tend to reproduce the status quo rather than challenge established power. Alternatively, this dissertation argues that Congolese intellectuals, at home and abroad, have an opportunity to transform Congolese politics if they directly invest in local grassroots movements and if they help concerned polities address concrete issues from the bottom-up.International relationsInternational relationsAfrican Diaspora Social Movements, African Diasporas, Congolese Diasporas, Congolese IntellectualsSchool of International ServiceDegree Awarded: Ph.D. School of International Service.
