This article presents the latest bibliographic update of neuropsychiatrist Anneliese Alma Pontius (1921-2018), who coined the neologism neuro-ethics in 1973. The 40 texts added to the bibliography published in 2022 have been thematically analyzed. What emerged was an interesting and novel field of research and reflection that weaves a bridge between neuroscience, psychiatry, and philosophy of action. In this contribution, the author begins the in-depth study of this topic related to the so-called neurolaw. Pontius’ pioneering vision also emerges in this context. The article emphasizes its relevance and originality of thought that touches the anthropological field in the characterization of hierarchical levels of consciousness and free will. Pontius’ medico-clinical model of neuroethics of a biological-systemic nature also connotes itself as a paradigm on the priority of life over human freedom

Pharmacological abortion is the practice of voluntary termination of pregnancy most frequently chosen by women. The alleged ease of use, the possibility of avoiding hospitalisation, the exaltation of privacy and the woman’s self-determination represent the main reasons for this abortion choice. The reflection will start from a historical analysis of the development of the abortion pill and its use in Italy through a procedure with a high emotional, health, legal and ethical impact, which does not seem to comply with law 194/78, which regulates the IVG procedure. The data on abortion in Italy, which show a significant increase in pharmacological abortions, will be examined to analyse the change in the perception of the moral gravity of the pharmacological abortion act compared to the surgical one. From the bioethical point of view, the issue concerns the woman’s health, involving her dignity, but also the principle of autonomy, the role of the Consultatories and the doctor-patient relationship. The approach taken is based on the personalist bioethical perspective and the position of the Church Magisterium.L’aborto farmacologico è la prassi di interruzione volontaria di gravidanza maggiormente scelta dalle donne.

This article presents the figure of Illinois neurologist Ronald Eugene Cranford (1940-2006) and highlights his neurological thinking and the anthropological interpretation on the nature of the mind-body relationship that he adopts. Within the medical-clinical paradigm of neuroethics, Cranford’s neurocentric forma mentis contrasts with the neuroethical paradigm proposed by neuropsychiatrist Anneliese Alma Pontius for at least two reasons: (1) it has at its basis the false disjunctive between human being and human person typical of modernity and attributed to the philosophical development of John Locke (1632-1704) who sees a synthesis in the mental experiment of the prince’s “soul” in the body of a cobbler (Essay on the Human Intellect 1690); (2) it envisions a functionalistic approach similar to that underlying behaviorism. This view corresponds to the application proposals in clinical settings about the interruption of nutrition and hydration in patients with certain neurological alterations in the brain areas that mediate the manifestation of self-consciousness

Although Saint John of the Cross mentions little the beatitudes of Saint Matthew in his works, his doctrine reveals to us how they describe an itinerary of spiritual life in which the active and passive dimensions are intertwined. It is an Easter path of transforming union that, animated by the love that purges and purifies, culminates in spiritual marriage. The beatitudes and the doctrine of Saint John of the Cross illuminate each other.
