Polar organic pollutants, micro-nano plastics and nanomaterials: Analytical techniques to reveal the still invisible human physico-chemical exposome
International audienceLarge international biomonitoring initiatives have emerged to start mapping the exposure of humans to environmental contaminants. However, data are only available for a very limited number of contaminants, which reflects the lack of methods available for some chemicals (e.g., polar and ionic organic contaminants), or the lack of standardized methods for particulate contaminants such as micro-nano plastics and engineered nanomaterials. Here, we explore the advantages of analytical techniques that could improve the coverage of the human physico-chemical exposome. We first focus on the advantages of alternative methods, i.e., ion chromatography and capillary electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry, to improve the detection of polar and ionic substances. We then reviewed methods that have been used so far for the particulate characterization of human exposure, and discuss their applicability in large-scale programs. The complementary nature of the skill sets from exposure communities have the potential to close some current gaps in knowledge
International audienceScientific research is currently undergoing a substantial transformation, that moves beyond the conventional boundaries of discipline-centric methodologies based on individual publishing. The scientific community is expanding its focus beyond the quest for fundamental knowledge, now driven by a stronger awareness of global societal issues, particularly in areas such as health and the environment. These challenges ask for feasible solutions that engage ordinary citizens. Disciplinary sciences, confined to their specific domains, are reaching their limits in addressing the complexity of today’s challenges, which require an openness to diverse fields of knowledge. In crucial areas such as public health and the environment, an interdisciplinary approach is essential for providing effective solutions. To enable this shift, it is essential to establish the conditions for a type of research that actively involves society. This inclusivity goes beyond researchers and encompasses non-researchers, involving them in the design and implementation of scientific projects. Researchers are now taking significant responsibilities regarding the major issues shaping our world.

Philippe Hamman, Aude Dziebowski.
International audienceWhy focus on ticks and their relationship to humans? These tiny arachnid arthropods, only a few millimeters long and long-present in Europe, are known to transmit Lyme disease and other infectious diseases to humans via animals. Drawing on an empirical study conducted between October 2021 and August 2022 in the Argonne region—a rural area in the Grand Est region, at the intersection of the Marne, Ardennes, and Meuse departments—sociologists Philippe Hamman and Aude Dziebowski explain how complexity and territorialization complicate decision-making for coherent and effective public action in the prevention and control of Lyme disease, and more broadly in addressing zoonoses.
New pedagogical tools for vaccine education: preparing future healthcare workers for the next pandemic
International audienceVaccine hesitancy (VH) is an issue for healthcare students, influenced by safety concerns and misinformation. The need for better communication training and understanding sociocultural factors in VH was highlighted in a European University Alliance seminar. Practical exercises like simulation role-playing, interprofessional collaboration, and digital literacy may improve vaccine education
Occupational exposure to organic solvents during pregnancy and child behavior from early childhood to adolescence
International audienceBackground: Organic solvents are used in formulating an extensive range of products for professional use. Animal and human studies suggest that in utero solvent exposure may affect neurodevelopment. Our objective was to assess the association between occupational exposure to solvents during pregnancy and child behavior aged 2-12 years. Methods: The French mother-child cohort PELAGIE (2002-2006) included 3,421 women recruited in early pregnancy. Occupational exposure to solvents was self-reported. For 459 children, parents used a questionnaire derived from the Child Behavior Checklist and the Preschool Social Behavior Questionnaire to assess their child's behavior, at age 2, and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire at ages 6 and 12. A cross-lagged structural equation modeling approach was used to assess direct and indirect associations between exposure and child behavior. Results: At age 2, an increased externalizing behavior score was suggested with prenatal exposure to solvents (mean change in standardized score (95%CI): 0.28 (-0.01, 0.57) for occasional exposure and 0.23 (-0.05, 0.51) for regular exposure). At ages 6 and 12, distinct sex-specific patterns were observed: among boys, no association with externalizing behavior was observed, while among girls, an association was seen for both occasional and regular exposure (total effect at age 12: 0.45 (0.06,0.83) and 0.40 (0.03, 0.76), respectively). For both sexes, occasional exposure may be associated with internalizing behavior at ages 6 and 12 (total effect at age 6: 0.37 (0.06, 0.68) and at age 12: 0.27 (-0.08, 0.62)).Conclusions: Occupational exposure to solvents during pregnancy may impact child behavior through either direct or cumulative effects during childhood; these associations may persist until early adolescence, especially among girls
QAI-Sport project: Indoor air quality in sports facilities - Characterization of exposure to emerging VOCs and SVOCs and to micro-organisms
International audienceThe quality of indoor air in sports facilities is still poorly known and studied. However, the intense activity associated with sport can lead to an increase in exposure through inhalation, breathing rate acceleration, ingestion of resuspended dust, and transcutaneous migration facilitated by sweat. The configuration, management and maintenance of premises can also contribute to a deterioration in indoor air quality in sport centers. These include, for example, the occupancy rate of rooms, poor ventilation management, the presence of synthetic floor coverings and technical materials that emit pollutants or favor the development and persistence of pathogenic micro-organisms such as coronavirus. The QAI-sport project (2022-2024), funded by ADEME (the French Agency for Ecological Transition), proposes to characterize exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and microbiological contaminants (molds, viruses and bacteria) by studying around ten sports facilities for different activities (martial arts, weight-lifting, motricity in preschools). The project is presented here, along with its methodology and main objectives.Initially, targeted and non-targeted analyses of these agents will be carried out under occupied and unoccupied conditions. Particular attention will be paid to identifying emerging contaminants, substances that are unregulated or unexpected in these environments, and to highlighting the main families of pathogenic micro-organisms.An in-depth study, carried out on a selection of three rooms, will then make it possible to study the sources and distribution of contaminants (VOCs, SVOCs and micro-organisms) between the gaseous and particulate phases of the air, settled dust and materials’ surfaces. In view of the recent pandemic, the project will also include specific research into Sars-CoV-2. Exposure to biocides used against this virus will be assessed as well. For SVOCs, the data obtained will be integrated into a model to predict the behavior of these pollutants in indoor environments. Finally, a study of the migration of VOCs and SVOCs in sweat and synthetic saliva will complete the results for a complete and detailed assessment of the exposure routes to these compounds
