-International audienceExploring several engravings illustrating either translations or reconfigurations of classical texts and mythology, the present paper offers a reading of the eponymous metamorphosis in The Bee and the Orange Tree as an invitation to a playful conception of the fairy tale marvelous. Entangled in the reader’s mind, 16th- and 17th-century visual representations of both the epic and emblematic traditions support and enhance the literary game at stake in the writing of a metamorphosis.
Differences in Persistent Inward Current Contribution to Spinal Motor Neuron Behaviour Between Early Morning and Late Afternoon
International audienceDespite the critical role of persistent inward currents (PICs) in modulating motor neuron output, and thus neuromuscular performance, it remains unknown whether their contribution to motor neuron discharge behaviour varies throughout the day. This study aimed to determine whether PIC-related effects on motor neuron activity during submaximal dorsiflexion tasks differ between the early morning and late afternoon. Eighteen healthy adults (4 females; 27.4±5.6 years) performed triangular isometric contractions at two randomized time-points on separate days: early morning (7:00–8:30a.m.) and late afternoon (5:00–7:30p.m.). Two conditions were tested: (1) a relative condition, where the target force corresponded to 40% of the maximal voluntary force (MVF) measured during that session, and (2) an absolute condition, where the target force was 40%MVF recorded during the first session. High-density surface electromyography signals were recorded from the tibialis anterior and decomposed into motor unit spike trains. The prolongation effect of PICs, estimated via ΔF, was significantly greater in the late afternoon in both the relative-absolute force conditions. The amplification effect of PICs, estimated by the acceleration phase of the discharge trajectory, was higher in the late afternoon, but only in the relative force condition. Brace height did not differ between morning and afternoon, but attenuation was lower in the late afternoon during the relative force condition. Collectively, these findings suggest a time-of-day modulation of PIC contribution to motor neuron discharge behaviour, likely mediated by a change in inhibitory–excitatory balance between early morning and late afternoon rather than by changes in neuromodulatory drive
Examining coping among adolescent athletes in an intensive training centre: A profile analysis
International audienceIntensive training exposes adolescent athletes to numerous stressors, presenting both challenges to be overcome and opportunities. The athletes' ability to cope with stress and maintain effective social interactions is essential to preserving well-being and performance. Using a person-centred approach, this study had three objectives: (a) identify the coping profiles of adolescent athletes in intensive training centres, (b) examine the influence of perceived social support on profile membership, and (c) characterise the adaptive nature of these profiles in relation to stress perception, subjective performance, well-being and emotions. A sample of 461 adolescent athletes (female = 59 %; M age = 17 ± 1.3) competing at national (82 %) or international (18 %) levels, completed a questionnaire on perceived availability and satisfaction with parental and coach support, individual coping, stress perceptions, subjective performance, well-being and emotions. The results yielded four distinct coping profiles, whose membership varied according to perceived social support: low-, engaged-, moderate-and disengaged coping profiles. The MANOVA revealed differences in stress perception, subjective performance, well-being and emotions across coping profiles, with the disengaged profile standing out for its particularly low levels of well-being, pleasant emotion direction and subjective performance, and high levels of unpleasant emotion intensity and direction. These results enhance understanding of adolescent athletes' coping profiles in intensive training centres and highlight the role of their entourage in helping them manage stress effectively. They confirm the multidimensional nature of coping and provide valuable guidance to athletes' support networks on how to offer appropriate support in their pursuit of excellence.</div
Shifts in Fossil Benthic Foraminiferal Community Trajectories During the Last Deglaciation Along the European Margin
International audienceConstraining how faunal communities vary over time and space in response to environmental change has long been a major goal of paleoecologists. Among fossilized organisms, few yield a better and greater detailed record than foraminifera to understand past marine conditions. The analytical frameworks used to build palaeoenvironmental reconstructions have progressed over the years, providing new perspectives within the field. One of these proposed frameworks, Ecological Trajectory Analysis (ETA), offers the possibility to compare geometric properties of trajectories to understand temporal changes within communities. We provide here an application of ETA to the fossil record by comparing benthic foraminiferal data sets from three previously studied cores from the French Atlantic margin. The three cores are each separated by approximately 350 km and cover the last deglaciation, thus allowing a comparison of community dynamics at spatial and temporal scales. A major perturbation in fossil benthic communities was identified in ETA metrics at the onset of Heinrich Stadial 1, with a twofold departing and recovering trend of communities. The three sites along the French Atlantic margin also show spatial differences during the deglaciation, testimony to a contrasting response of benthic foraminifera to ice sheet dynamics and fluctuating fluvial discharges. In this instance, the application of ETA allows to compare multiple fossil foraminiferal records. At a broader scale, the use of trajectory metrics within one unique multivariate space of community resemblance stands out as a powerful tool to compare many other fossil records within the field of paleoecology

Surfactant-Driven Hydrogen Evolution in Organic Nanoparticles Prepared by Nanoprecipitation
International audienceIn this work, donor:acceptor (D:A) semiconducting organic nanoparticles were synthesized by nanoprecipitation using two different anionic surfactants: sodium 2-(3-thienyl)ethyloxybutylsulfonate (TEBS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). In contrast to previous studies employing miniemulsion as the synthetic methodology, the SDS-stabilized dispersions exhibited superior photocatalytic performance, showing a 2-fold increase in hydrogen production. This enhanced activity is attributed to a more favorable D:A blend morphology that promotes exciton dissociation in the case of P3HT:PC61BM. Indeed, Janus nanoparticles were obtained when SDS was used, leading to a hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 0.52 mmol·g–1·h–1, whereas TEBS produced core–shell nanoparticles with a reduced rate of 0.35 mmol·g–1·h–1. A similar trend was observed with a higher-performing D:A system, PTQ10:Y6. Although transient absorption spectroscopy did not reveal significant differences in exciton dissociation and charge dynamics between the samples, a higher charge extraction efficiency to the medium led to higher platinum cocatalyst loading for the SDS-stabilized nanoparticles, achieving a HER of 11.5 mmol·g–1·h–1, while TEBS-stabilized nanoparticles reached 6.8 mmol·g–1·h–1
