Landwirtschaft in großem Maßstab.
In the 20th and 21st centuries, agriculture underwent a process of industrialisation that profoundly transformed farms, leading to the development of huge agro-industrial complexes. This article analyses this dynamic as a change of scale, and to this end develops the concept of “scalability work”. This concept highlights both the fact that a transition towards an industrial scale means resolving countless biological, social, technical, economic and political issues, and that such work has no end: it relates not only to the task of scaling up; it also consists in ensuring the perpetuation of large-scale production systems that are based on precarious assemblages and which generate numerous spillovers. Scalability work is therefore a continuous process of articulation, maintenance and repair that is all the more delicate and unstable in the case of the industrialisation of agriculture in that it applies to living organisms.
Towards systemic support for agricultural mechanization in sub Saharan Africa
Source Agritrop Cirad (https://agritrop.cirad.fr/615866/) * Autres projets (id;sigle;titre): ;MECAWAT;(FRA) Mechanization and Work in Agroecological Transitions//International audienceAgricultural mechanization and motorization play an important role in reducing the arduousness of work and contributing to food security. In sub-Saharan Africa, there remain many challenges before equipment becomes accessible to as many people as possible, is properly used and maintained, and deployed in an inclusive and lasting manner. Existing equipment is sometimes ill-suited, and there is a lack of information about access to mechanization and associated agricultural practices, as well as appropriate ways of intervening. Yet, some novel courses of action do exist, promoting systemic intervention incorporating the concepts of access, use and sustainability, notably by co-designing equipment and supporting stakeholders
In the Ruins of Extractivism: The Unfinished Rehabilitation of the Soil in the Orbiel Valley
International audienceThis paper reviews the history of the rehabilitation of the former Salsigne gold mining site, in the Orbiel valley (southern France), closed since 2004. It traces the stages of its securing and partial clean-up, not yet completed. More specifically, it examines the epistemic cultures and socio-technical imaginaries of rehabilitation professionals to understand how they worked. By examining controversies concerning the safety of mining waste storage facilities, the effectiveness of run-off treatment and the definition of the geochemical background, we are able to compare different technical approaches. The result is a reflection on some of the blind spots that prevent us from considering malfunctions or postpone their resolution. We argue in favor of greater participation by local populations in the technical choices determining the future of former mining areas.
International audienceCapriMam3D: 3D technologies to support goat milking tomorrowThe goat udder is at the heart of many issues: animal health and welfare, milk quality, zootechnical performance and well-being of farmers. The diversity of the udders involves adapting milking equipment and improving genetic selection on the morphology of the teats. CapriMam3D has developed a 3D scanner of the caprine udders which generates more precise and repeatable images than those obtained via conventional manual pointing. The standard for in vitro teat cup testing requires teats made of hard plastic, but thanks to 3D technologies, flexible and anatomical artificial teats have been created, with behaviors similar to those observed on milking farms. Thermography or congestion measurement of teat tissues with cutimeter allow in vivo tests to complete these approaches to measure the impact of milking equipment on teats and thus define the most suitable liner/teat combinations.
Topography optimization for enhancing microalgal growth in raceway ponds
International audienceModelling the evolution process for the growth of microalgae in an artificial pond is a huge challenge, given the complex interaction between hydrodynamics and biological processes occurring across various timescales. In this paper, we consider a raceway, i.e., an oval pond where the water is set in motion by a paddle wheel. Our aim is to investigate theoretically and numerically the impact of bottom topography in such raceway ponds on microalgae growth. To achieve this goal, we consider a biological model based on the Han model, coupled with the Saint--Venant systems that model the fluid. We then formulate an optimization problem, for which we apply the weak maximum principle to characterize optimal topographies that maximize biomass production over one lap of the raceway pond or multiple laps with a paddle wheel. In contrast to a widespread belief in the field of microalgae, we show that a flat topography in a periodic regime satisfies the necessary optimality condition, and observe in the numerical experiments that the flat topography is actually optimal in this case. However, non-trivial topographies may be more advantageous in alternative scenarios, such as when considering the effects of mixing devices within the model. This study sheds light on the intricate relationship between bottom topography, fluid dynamics, and microalgae growth in raceway ponds, offering valuable insights into optimizing biomass production

Perspectives on agricultural technologies for sustainable transitions. Their role in farming system innovation towards sustainable agriculture
International audienceAgriculture is undergoing rapid technological change, marked by the rise of data-intensive tools ranging from field robotics to digital platforms, which promise more efficient and sustainable production. However, the strength of digitalization of these innovations often misaligns with the temporal, environmental, and complex social dynamics of farming. This chapter critically examines the role of agricultural technologies in sustainability transitions, focusing on their integration into diverse farming contexts. It draws on two key conceptual frameworks: the “technical fact,” which focuses on technologies as mediators between the farmer’s decision-making and the material execution of tasks, and the “multi-level perspective”, to describe and understand socio-technical transitions. The chapter maps how technologies reshape farming tasks and how tasks could, in turn, be shaped, coping with tensions between digitalization, automation, and the realities of farming labor, knowledge, and infrastructures. It analyzes how the digital part of Agriculture 4.0 technologies challenges and integrates into the farmers’ knowledge systems, with a focus on field robotics, mainly from a French and Western perspective. Examples from research projects and field-based demonstrations illustrate how co-design and participatory approaches can reorient innovation processes. By presenting alternative pathways—such as low-tech innovations, grassroots tinkering, and responsible mechanization—and some perspectives for research and policy, the chapter concludes on the evaluation of sustainability of agricultural technologies. Beyond performance metrics, the development of technologies must also account for reparability, equity, and resilience in the use of natural resources, pursuing a more grounded and pluralistic vision of Agriculture 4.0, rooted in both technical rigor and contextual sensitivity
