Low-voltage Schottky p-GaN HEMT properties under extreme repetitive short-circuit operation conditions: 2DEG pinch-off, stability, aging, robustness and failure-modes analysis - Selected and Extended Full Paper from ESREF'24
International audienceThe authors proposed in-depth experimentation and physical analysis showing the extreme robustness capability of low-voltage GaN HEMT in single and repetitive short-circuit. A 2DEG pinch-off behavior is analyzed depending on VDS voltage and charges’ trapping / de-trapping relaxation time. A new drain–gate leakage-current mechanism at turn-off is suggested to explain the ultimate thermal-runaway failure-mechanism
Humanoid Robot Whole-body Geometric Calibration with Embedded Sensors and a Single Plane
Whole-body geometric calibration of humanoid robots using classical robot calibration methods is a timeconsuming and experimentally burdensome task. However, despite its significance for accurate control and simulation, it is often overlooked in the humanoid robotics community. To address this issue, we propose a novel practical method that utilizes a single plane, embedded force sensors, and an admittance controller to calibrate the whole-body kinematics of humanoids without requiring manual intervention. Given the complexity of humanoid robots, it is crucial to generate and determine a minimal set of optimal calibration postures. To do so, we propose a new algorithm called IROC (Information Ranking algorithm for selecting Optimal Calibration postures). IROC requires a pool of feasible candidate postures to build a normalized weighted information matrix for each posture. Then, contrary to other algorithms from the literature, IROC will determine the minimal number of optimal postures that are to be played onto a robot for its calibration. Both IROC and the single-plane calibration method were experimentally validated on a TALOS humanoid robot. The total whole-body kinematics chain was calibrated using solely 31 optimal postures with 3-point contacts on a table by the robot gripper. In a cross-validation experiment, the average root-mean-square (RMS) error was reduced by a factor of 2.3 compared to the manufacturer's model
A Survey on TDoA-based localization schemes for Long Range Wide Area Networks
International audienceThe Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is the most widely used technology for localization, offering realtime, high-accuracy positioning with global coverage. However, its limitations, such as high energy consumption and signal obstruction in certain environments, make it unsuitable for some emerging applications. One such challenge is the localization of very low-power devices, which require alternative positioning solutions. As a result, research efforts are increasingly focused on improving localization precision and addressing challenges related to energy efficiency, coverage limitations, and signal reliability. This paper provides an overview of existing Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, with a particular emphasis on LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Networks) as the deployed technology and Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) as the primary localization technique
National audienceReal-time monitoring of the state of health (SoH) of batteries remains a major challenge, particularly in microgrids where operational constraints limit the use of traditional methods. As part of the 4BLife project, we propose an innovative method based on the analysis of a discharge pulse at the end of the charge phase. The parameters of the equivalent electrical model describing the voltage evolution across the battery terminals during this current pulse are then used to estimate the SoH. Based on the experimental data acquired so far, the initial results demonstrate the relevance of the proposed approach. After training using the parameters of two batteries with a capacity degradation of around 85%, we successfully predicted the degradation of two other batteries, cycled down to approximately 90% SoH, with a mean absolute error of around 1% in the worst case, and an explainability score of the estimator close to 0.9. If these performances are confirmed, this method can be easily integrated into battery management systems (BMS) and paves the way for optimized battery management under continuous operation.
In-context learning for the classification of manipulation techniques in phishing emails
Traditional phishing detection often overlooks psychological manipulation. This study investigates using Large Language Model (LLM) In-Context Learning (ICL) for fine-grained classification of phishing emails based on a taxonomy of 40 manipulation techniques. Using few-shot examples with GPT-4o-mini on real-world French phishing emails (SignalSpam), we evaluated performance against a human-annotated test set (100 emails). The approach effectively identifies prevalent techniques (e.g., Baiting, Curiosity Appeal, Request For Minor Favor) with a promising accuracy of 0.76. This work demonstrates ICL's potential for nuanced phishing analysis and provides insights into attacker strategies
Decomposition methods for beam-layout optimization
International audienceIn the context of payload design for telecommunication satellites, we address the optimization problem of beam layout. The objective is to define the beams emitted by the antennas of a geostationary satellite to cover regions on the Earth’s surface, represented as polygons. The regions must be grouped into beams such that the beam sizes are minimized to favor the link budget. Specifically, our criterion is to minimize the squared radius sum (SRS) of the selected beams. Additionally, each beam layout must be associated with a feasible mapping of beams to reflectors (antenna dishes), typically constrained to NR = 4 reflectors. This mapping must ensure that two beams assigned to the same reflector maintain a minimum separation distance. The mapping and sizing of beams are inherently linked to the arrangement and dimensions of the antenna equipment, which must be physically feasible. Each beam is produced by a single antenna feed, and feeds of beams assigned to the same reflector are grouped into a cluster. The minimum separation distance between beams ensures sufficient space for all feeds within a cluster. The problem of assigning beams to reflectors can be modeled as a graph coloring problem of G, where beams correspond to vertices, and edges represent the minimum distance constraint. To tackle this challenging problem, we propose two decomposition methods: column generation and logic-based Benders decomposition
International audienceCoded Aperture Snapshot Spectral Imagers (CASSI) are designed to acquire 2D coded acquisitions of hyperspectral scenes (HSS). Associated with reconstruction algorithms, they allow to analyze the HSS using a small amount of data. Various configurations of such imagers exist, with different distortions. In this article we show that reconstruction quality is relatively insensitive to these distortions, if modeled correctly. To this end, we introduce a differentiable ray-tracing-based model that incorporates aberrations and distortions to render realistic coded hyperspectral acquisitions using CASSI. Such simulated acquisitions are used to train state-of-the-art hyperspectral cube reconstruction algorithms. We also adapted these algorithms through the use of a ray-tracing-based mapping function which accounts for aberrations and distortions. We evaluated four comparable CASSI systems with varying degree of optical aberrations and misalignments, using five state-of-the-art hyperspectral cube reconstruction algorithms. Our analyses show that if properly modeled, the effects of geometric distortions of the system and misalignment of the dispersive elements have a marginal impact on the overall reconstruction quality. Therefore, relaxing traditional constraints on measurement conformity and fidelity to the scene enables the development of novel imaging instruments, guided by performance metrics applied to the design or the processing of acquisitions. By providing a complete framework for design, simulation and evaluation, this work contributes to the optimization and exploration of new CASSI systems and more generally to the computational imaging community.
