Wake/Sleep Classification via a Label-Efficient Contrastive Learning Approach
No full textData annotation can be highly labor-intensive for sleep staging, where experts need to analyze encephalograms recorded throughout an entire sleep night. To address this challenge, this paper presents CL-WSC, a label-efficient contrastive learning approach for wake/sleep classification. First, we use a contrastive learning model to learn versatile, time-enriched representations at the timestep level. Next, we train a machine learning model on a small labeled dataset for the Wake/Sleep classification to learn to map the representation space to the output space. We evaluate our approach using data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) dataset, comprising 1186 patient records. We demonstrate that the learned representations effectively capture key characteristics of the input signals, which are also useful for Sleep/Wake classification without requiring any labels during training. Additionally, we demonstrate that our model achieves performances comparable to those of fully supervised models while using only one-tenth of the labeled data

How Do Immigrants Promote Exports?

To answer this question we propose an empirical framework allowing to disentangle the role of migration networks that operate at a bilateral level from that of productivity channels (knowledge diffusion and increased workforce diversity) that operate at the aggregate level. We find evidence supporting both, at the extensive as well as at the intensive margin. The results are robust to using various IV strategies. While richer countries’ exports tend to benefit more from immigrants’ diversity (especially in sectors characterized by complex production processes), developing countries benefit from knowledge diffusion more

Weather Shocks and the Optimal Policy Mix in a Climate-Vulnerable Economy
No full textUsing data from a selection of Latin American countries affected by El Niño-Southern Oscillation climate phenomena, we observe that extreme weather events can be highly disruptive for an economy, particularly in the agricultural sector, while also giving rise to inflationary pressures. Motivated by these findings, this paper examines the optimal stabilization policies for a climate-vulnerable economy with two segmented sectors: agriculture (producing food) and manufacturing. In response to climate disasters affecting agriculture, it is found to be optimal to increase fiscal transfers to farmers while maintaining core inflation at its target level. Deviating from the optimal policy mix results in smaller welfare losses as long as core inflation remains stabilized

No full textNational audienceLeadership development is a major challenge for organizations, and beyond. A number of theoretical models exist for designing and deploying pathways that have a lasting impact on the managers concerned. Reflexivity is considered an essential aspect of the experiential learning models that have been used in corporate training programs for several years now. New technologies make it possible to mobilize this aspect of learning to help teams adopt new behaviors and leadership practices in the field. Reflexivity, mobilized in a variety of ways, is said to be “instrumental” in that it serves the pre-existing rationality within the company without calling it into question. To be effective, this mobilization of managerial reflexivity could help develop a capacity for learning from experience, enabling managers to address social and environmental challenges of a different kind.Le développement du leadership est un enjeu majeur pour les organisations, et au-delà. Plusieurs modèles théoriques existent permettant la conception et le déploiement de parcours dont l’impact est durable pour les managers concernés. Dans les modèles d’apprentissage de l’expérience mobilisés dans le cadre de parcours réalisés auprès d’entreprises depuis plusieurs années, la réflexivité est considérée comme un aspect essentiel. Les nouvelles technologies permettent de mobiliser cet aspect de l’apprentissage au service de l’appropriation de nouveaux comportements et pratiques de leadership sur le terrain, dans les équipes. La réflexivité, mobilisée dans plusieurs modalités, est dite « instrumentale » en ce qu’elle sert la rationalité pré-existante au sein de l’entreprise sans la remettre en question. Pour être efficace, cette mobilisation de la réflexivité des managers pourrait permettre de développer une capacité d’apprentissage dans l’expérience de manière à permettre aux managers d’adresser des défis sociaux et environnementaux d’une autre nature
Inhomogenous Navier-Stokes equations with unbounded density
No full textIn the current state of the art regarding the Navier-Stokes equations, the existence of unique solutions for incompressible flows in two spatial dimensions is already well-established. Recently, these results have been extended to models with variable density, maintaining positive outcomes for merely bounded densities, even in cases with large vacuum regions. However, the study of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with unbounded densities remains incomplete. Addressing this gap is the focus of the present paper.Our main result demonstrates the global existence of a unique solution for flows initiated by unbounded density, whose regularity/integrability is characterized within a specific subset of the Yudovich class of unbounded functions. The core of our proof lies in the application of Desjardins' inequality, combined with a blow-up criterion for ordinary differential equations. Furthermore, we derive time-weighted estimates that guarantee the existence of a C 1 velocity field and ensure the equivalence of Eulerian and Lagrangian formulations of the equations. Finally, by leveraging results from [9], we conclude the uniqueness of the solution.</div
A short review on Improvements and stability for some interpolation inequalities
No full textInternational audienceIn this paper, we present recent stability results with explicit and dimensionally sharp constants and optimal norms for the Sobolev inequality and for the Gaussian logarithmic Sobolev inequality obtained by the authors in [24]. The stability for the Gaussian logarithmic Sobolev inequality was obtained as a byproduct of the stability for the Sobolev inequality. Here we give a new, direct, alternative proof. We also discuss improved versions of interpolation inequalities based on the carré du champ method
