    A note on big data analytics capability development in supply chain

    International audienceBig data analytics (BDA) are gaining importance in all aspects of business management. This is driven by both the presence of large-scale data and management's desire to root decisions in data. Extant research demonstrates that supply chain and operations management functions are among the biggest sources and users of data in the company. Therefore, their decision-making processes would benefit from increased use of BDA technologies. However, there is still a lack of understanding of what determines a company's ability to build BDA capability to gain a competitive advantage. In this study, we attempt to answer this fundamental question by identifying the factors that assist a company in or inhibit it from building its BDA capability and maximizing its gains through BDA technologies. We base our findings on a qualitative analysis of data collected from field visits, interviews with senior management, and secondary resources. We find that, in addition to technical capacity, competitive landscape and intra-firm power dynamics play an important role in building BDA capability and using BDA technologies.

    Factors Influencing Students’ Decision to Drop Out of Online Courses in Brazil

    International audienceIn recent years, e-learning has been the fastest growing educational form in students' numbers, and this industry's market revenue (Lee, Choi, &Kim, 2013).Despite this growth, concern about the significantly higher student dropout rate of students in online courses as compared with conventional learning environments has increased. Brazil has also registered a significant increase in the number of students interested in this type of education, but the dropout rate is a considerable concern to institutions.This study’s objective was to identify the relevant variables behind online students’ dropout decision in Brazil. After a literature review that determined the ten most recurrent and relevant variables, we heard professional e-learning experts. They indicated, from their standpoint, what the most pertinent variables influencing dropout would be. Based on this, we conducted a quantitative survey with e-learning students, considering the factors indicated in the literature on this subject and educational professionals’ indications.This study's contribution was to verify that the quality support is extraordinarily relevant and has a high correlation with students' perception of Usefulness, the quality of Course Content, and ease of System Use

Enterprise strategic orientations include policy orientation and market orientation, and external environmental characteristics contain system integrity and industrial competitiveness. Both the policy factors and market factors are important considerations for an enterprise's strategic choice and environmental management activities. System integrity shows no significant negative regulating function on the policy orientation of environmental management relationships, while industrial competitiveness plays a remarkably positive regulating role in the market orientation environmental management

    Board gender diversity, competitive pressure and investment efficiency in Chinese private firms

    International audienceThis study investigates the impact of female directors (FDs) on investment efficiency in a competitive environment. Considering Chinese market, where corporate governance practices are weaker than other developed countries and empirical evidence regarding the role of female directors in shaping investment efficiency is absent, this study fills this gap by studying the role of the female directors in investment efficiency in a competitive environment. The results show that FDs improve the investment efficiency in the firms as they play a monitoring role, discipline the management, reduce agency problem, and improve efficient allocation of resources. The results also exhibit that FDs significantly curb the overinvestment problem. However, FDs do not play a significant role in reducing underinvestment problem. The study facilitates to understand the factors that help in efficient allocation of resources in an economy. This study can be helpful for the policymakers while devising corporate policies to promote and encourage gender diversity in higher management

    Are the interdependence characteristics of the US and Canadian energy equity sectors nonlinear and asymmetric?

    International audienceNonlinear, symmetric, and asymmetric dependence characteristics in energy equity sectors matter to portfolio investors and risk managers because of the risks and diversification opportunities they entail. Specifically, nonlinear dependence dynamics between assets are harder to predict, monitor, and manage, and can make investment positions go wrong unexpectedly. In this paper, we investigate whether the dependence dynamics of US and Canadian large-capitalized energy equity portfolios are nonlinear, symmetric, or asymmetric. We draw our results by implementing a robust copula approach based on time-varying parameter copulas and vine copula methods. Both time varying parameter and vine-copula methods indicate that the Canadian energy sector portfolio is driven by nonlinear negative tail asymmetric dependence during the global financial crisis and when the full sample period is employed. On the other hand, it displays nonlinear symmetric dependence during the oil price crisis, implying the need for close monitoring and rebalancing and a more continuous assessment of long investment positions. The US energy sector portfolio is driven by positive tail asymmetric dependence, and by symmetric dependence dynamics during crisis and non-crisis periods

    Greening products in a supply chain under market segmentation and different channel power structures

    International audienceThis paper investigates product line expansion in which a green version of an existing conventional brown product is launched. We use a game-theoretic approach to study a supply chain consisting of one retailer and one manufacturer, either of which can be the leader of the supply chain. Our model assumes a market segmented based on the consumers’ willingness to pay for the green feature of the product and incorporates a fixed cost related to launching the green product. Through our analysis, we define four pricing and positioning strategies for brown and green products. We explicitly express the conditions under which it is more profitable to expand the conventional product line with a green product and determine the region where each pricing strategy applies in the centralized system as well as in the two decentralized systems with each member as the leader of the supply chain. Our results also show that a manufacturer-led supply chain is better prepared than a retailer-led supply chain to overcome the fixed cost, launch the green product, and grasp benefits from the growth of the green consumer segment at an early stage of its development. We design two coordination mechanisms that allow the decentralized supply chain to achieve its first-best performance

    How corporate social responsibility activities influence employer reputation: The role of social media capability

    International audienceThis study analyzes the relation between the firm's corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, employer reputation, and social media in the academic conversation on business value of technology. Motivated by the controversy over the function of social media in the firm's generation of value from CSR activities, this study hypothesizes that firms that perform CSR activities may become better employers and that this positive relationship may be stronger when firms leverage social media technologies. We explain this effect of social media by arguing that these social technologies enable higher social visibility and exposure/credibility. We tested our research model with data from 100 organizations in Spain. The results provided two key insights: 1) CSR activities enable firms to build greater employer reputation; and 2) social media capability amplifies the effect of CSR activities on employer reputation. This study contributes to Information Systems and Business Ethics research by arguing theoretically and demonstrating empirically that leveraging a technology such as social media generates business value through maximization of the positive impact of CSR activities on employer reputation of the firm

    The Bitcoin options market: A first look at pricing and risk

    International audienceThis paper offers the first-ever look at Bitcoin options by investigating the wedge between optimum Bitcoin option prices based on classical option valuation models (Black-Scholes-Merton and the Heston-Nandi GARCH (1,1)) and actual premiums at which these options are trading. For this purpose, we use near-the-money call and put options traded on Deribit platform as on 27.01.2020, with the maturities ranging from January 31 to 25 September 2020. In addition, we analyse the risk inherent in Bitcoin options by calculating their Greeks and comparing them to those of traditional commodity options. Pricing results suggest slight overpricing and underpricing for Bitcoin call options with the strike $8,000 maturing on 30.01.2020 and 28.02.2020, respectively. We also find that the Bitcoin options provide much stable deltas over time compared to the other commodity options. This result implies higher insulation from undue price rises with the passage of time for investors in Bitcoin options. Our results are useful to regulators, investors and market managers in better understanding the nuances of the Bitcoin options market in addition to making more informed investment choices

    Sustainable closed-loop supply chain network for an integrated water supply and wastewater collection system under uncertainty

    International audienceToday, an increase in the drought and water shortage all around the world is a challengeable threat for different governments and international committees. Water supply chain aims to manage the water consumption and to control the water shortage. Contrary to most of previous studies focused on the forward directions of the water supply chain, this paper also considers the reverse logistics known as a Closed-Loop Supply Chain (CLSC). Hence, an integrated Water Supply and Wastewater Collection System (WSWCS) under uncertainty is proposed. Furthermore, regarding the trend of sustainable development, the environmental dimensions and social benefits of the integrated WSWCS are contributed. To meet the standards of the sustainable development in developing countries, a case study in Iran is applied to a novel multi-objective stochastic optimization model based on triple bottom lines of sustainability. Having already been employed to similar optimization problems, the Social Engineering Optimizer (SEO) has been never applied in this research area. Another innovation of this study is to introduce an improved multi-objective SEO to solve this complicated model. Eventually, with regards to an extensive comparison contributing to the Pareto-based metrics and different sensitivities, some managerial implications are concluded as the main findings

    Factor‐augmented Bayesian cointegration models: a case‐study on the soybean crush spread

    International audienceWe investigate how vector auto-regressive models can be used to study the soybean crush spread. By crush spread we mean a time series marking the difference between a weighted combination of the value of soymeal and soyoil to the value of the original soybeans. Commodity industry practitioners often use fixed prescribed values for these weights, which do not take into account any time-varying effects or any financial-market-based dynamic features that can be discerned from futures price data. We address this issue by proposing an appropriate time series model with cointegration. Our model consists of an extension of a particular vector auto-regressive model that is used widely in econometrics. Our extensions are inspired by the problem at hand and allow for a time-varying covariance structure and a time-varying intercept to account for seasonality. To perform Bayesian inference we design an efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm, which is based on the approach of Koop and his co-workerss. Our investigations on prices obtained from futures contracts data confirmed that the added features in our model are useful in reliable statistical determination of the crush spread. Although the interest here is on the soybean crush spread, our approach is applicable also to other tradable spreads such as oil and energy-based crack and spark spreads
