In a world where we seek to optimize costs, both economic and environmental, reducing the mass of structures is promising. The use of thin walls and lighter alloys such as titanium can lead to significant mass gains. Nevertheless, the high solubility limit of oxygen for these alloys limits their operating temperature. In this work, oxidation behavior of a Ti6242S alloy was studied between 538 and 650°C. Different characterization methods were used to determine the diffusion of oxygen in the alloy. These data allowed us to define pre-oxidation heat treatments, which were used to get targeted oxygen-enriched zones on the specimens for mechanical tests. These tests were carried out at 450 and 550°C on thin specimens (0.1 to 1 mm thick) to characterize the tensile behavior of the oxygen-enriched zone. Young's modulus measured increases linearly with the proportion of the area affected by oxygen diffusion. Tests on thin samples also highlighted the antagonistic effects of a hardening effect due to the oxygen enriched zone and an embrittlement effect (macroscopic softening and loss of ductility) induced by crack network development. Fatigue tests were carried out also at 450 and 550°C on samples submitted to different pre-oxidation and cycling conditions. The reduction of service fatigue life increases with the proportion of the section affected oxidation. A metallurgical ageing of the material was also highlighted for the longest oxidations. The presence of feathers-like structures impacting strain and crack localization was evidenced on thin samples. Finite element calculations have been performed to model mechanical behavior of pre-oxidized specimens as this mechanical behavior depends on the local oxygen contents. By inverse calculation, taking into account the real oxygen content gradient, it is possible to investigate the local mechanical behavior as a function of the oxygen content as well as the core-shell effect (core discharge / skin overload). This point is important for the fatigue design of components that oxidize in service and for which the oxygen affected area increases during the operating period.
The maintenance of critical infrastructure networks such as water distribution networks requires complex planning processes. Preventive maintenance, which consists in monitoring and ensuring the proper functioning of infrastructure and equipment, within known timeframes and on a tactical scale, is mixed with reactive maintenance, which consists in intervening as early as possible in the face of disruptions and unforeseen malfunctions, on an operational scale. The aim of this thesis is to provide a research framework for analyzing the levers for improving planning processes, through efficiency and resilience indicators. Thanks to the business expertise provided by the players involved in the Veolia Eau Sud-Ouest case study, the requirements in terms of planning maintenance operations are defined, modeled, compared with other routing problems in the literature, and formalized in the form of Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP). The resulting optimization problem is a variant of the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), with many additional constraints, and is not yet studied as such in the literature. This formalization enables the development of algorithmic resolution approaches. Three methods are proposed. One aims to reproduce the current planning processes in a local department of Veolia Eau Sud-Ouest. Calibrated and validated with field experts, it will be used as a theoretical basis of comparison for the other two. The second is an adaptation of the Ant Colony System meta-heuristic, widely used in the literature for solving large routing problems. Finally, the last one is a new Cluster-first, Route-second (CFRS) approach which decomposes the initial planning problem into two sub-problems formalized in PLNE. In the first stage, clusters are formed, assigning each maintenance worker a set of tasks to be carried out on each day. In a second step, precise routes are created within each cluster. Several versions of this approach are modeled, depending on the planning horizon considered. The results obtained on the various indicators using different experimental designs show that a substantial gain can be obtained by using the CFRS approach, and particularly for the consideration of due date compliance. They also show that it is possible to use an algorithmic approach which takes into account all the constraints of the industrial problem, can be applied to instances of realistic size, in a deterministic context (definition of forecast schedules) as well as in a dynamic context (re-planning when emergencies occur).La maintenance des réseaux d'infrastructures critiques tels que le réseau de distribution d'eau nécessite des processus complexes de planification.

Questioning the relevance of using Physical Internet for managing autonomous train shuttles in rural areas
International audienceCurrent logistics and transportation activities are unsustainable in the long run, prompting several authors to focus their efforts on developing solutions. However, the majority of the proposed solutions are aimed toward a more urban setting, disregarding rural or sparsely populated areas since they present numerous and difficult challenges. In this context, the EU adopted a strategy based on the Physical Internet paradigm to achieve a sustainable logistics and transportation system by 2050. One solution focuses on the reuse of railway lines that are currently underutilized or unaffected by the introduction of autonomous shuttles that transport passengers and small packages. However, no analysis of the capacities provided by the Physical Internet for the application of these shuttles has been conducted to date. As a result, the purpose of this article is to conduct an analysis of the challenges and opportunities of the rural context, as well as the potential solutions offered by the Physical Internet to address them
International audienceTo be competitive in a global market where competition is sometimes distorted by local aid, European companies must be innovative and flexible. They must therefore be able to count on competent and responsive staff capable of adapting to the various workstations. The initial and continuous training of personnel is therefore a crucial need today. The arrival on the market of AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) technologies makes it possible to imagine new training models. This is especially relevant when dealing with renewable energies, such as hydrogen, which are called to play a crucial role in the current energy transition. The work carried out in this study consists of offering novice users a set of educational scenarios and an virtual reality device for handling a fuel cell didactic bank test for hydrogen utilization. In a first scenario, the students rebuild a fuel cell by correctly assembling the different components. A second scenario make them draw the polarization curve and studying the influence of the operating conditions of fuel cell management, namely temperature and current or tension piloting of the fuel cell. A first work carried out on a small group of students tests the autonomy of the users with this new device. A second experiment carried out on first-year engineering school students and master students made it possible to quantify usability using a standardized SUS questionnaire. The results show that the level of usability varies from good to excellent, regardless of whether the user has used a VR headset before. They also validate the transmission of technical skills from post-bac learning levels (French Licence Pro and BTS) to Master level through the cooperative work of students from different disciplines, from technicians to engineers. To obtain this result, the observed criterion is the effective assembling of the fuel cell system, the evaluation of the security risks associated to hydrogen and the piloting of a fuel cell system in an autonomous manner. The global work in progress aims at providing relevant training scenarios for the training and the use of fuel cells
This work proposes an innovative approach to the production, characterization and use of biocarbon catalysts for energy and environment-related applications, in order to reduce the cost and impact of the commercial catalysts currently in use. The work developed here promotes a circular economy approach in the way that plants from phytoremediation have been used for the production of eco-friendly biocarbon catalysts. They were used for the production of energy vectors such as hydrogen by direct and reverse water-gas shift reaction (WGS and RWGS respectively), as well as for the decomposition of NOx pollutants (deNOx). Biocarbon catalysts were produced from willow and fern with a controlled metal content introduced by wet impregnation before or after pyrolysis at 800°C to imitate hyperaccumulation (>3 g metal/kg biocarbon) in a porous carbon support. The resulting catalysts were tested in deNOx, as well as WGS and RWGS reactions, and the associated experimental equipments were developed and optimized during this thesis work. They were characterized in terms of composition, structure and thermal stability, before and after use. For the three reactions, the catalysts showed high selectivity and conversion, facilitated by the catalytic metals whose activity was enhanced by the inherent metals. The presence of surface oxygen functions and a high specific surface area (3 g métal /kg biocarbone) dans un support carboné poreux.
International audienceThe aim of this work was to study the compression behavior of a mat reinforcement. The compaction stages of the dry and wet reinforcement and its relaxation over time as a function of several pressure levels have been characterized with a custom-designed bench. The compression behavior of the reinforcement can be modeled by a power law. The coefficients of the law are changing with the rupture of the fibers during compression. The study of the reinforcement compressibility enables an optimized composite manufacturing, to obtain materials without porosity and without increasing the thickness induced by a polymer excess.L’objectif de ce travail est d'étudier le comportement en compression d'un renfort de type mat.
Due to their complex networked nature of diverse interconnected and interdependent actors, supply chains have never been more prone and fragile to instability, which has been generated by a massive increase in natural and man-made disasters over the past decades and is becoming the norm. It has become impossible to ignore and eliminate the instability that exists. Being able to cope with this instability becomes an inescapable challenge and a strong expectation of managers. To meet this need, our works study the applicability of the Physics of Decision (PoD) approach, an innovative approach to decision support based on the laws of motion of classical physics. In this approach the focus is on developing a theoretical and mathematical framework to model the impact of risks and opportunities disrupting a supply chain as physical forces, deviating it like an object from its performance objectives in its multidimensional performance framework, built from its quantitative key performance indicators. This strong connection between the achievement of the performance objectives of a supply chain and its exposure to risks and opportunities through the use of physical laws is a strong contribution of the PoD approach. It allows (1) to examine the evolution of the supply chain in its performance framework through a kinematic analysis of its multidimensional performance trajectory and (2) to propose a reactive and predictive analysis based on the identified physical forces. Thus, being able to assess and formalize these deviation forces is one of the major challenges for the application of the PoD approach. Due to the unpredictable and unquantifiable nature of disruptions, supply chain risk and opportunity management cannot simply list the forces impacting it. In this highly volatile environment, supply chains need to build resilience (their ability to resist, adapt and respond to disruptions). In the literature, two definitions of supply chain resilience can be distinguished: engineering resilience (the speed of return to equilibrium) and ecological resilience (the amount of extrinsic forces it is able to withstand). Our research seeks to investigate the contributions of the PoD approach to measure in a single approach these two fundamental views of resilience, which to our knowledge has never been proposed. The contributions of the PoD approach also lie in the mastery of the performance framework (seen as a space at the heart of the decision process) and the theoretical calculation of the overall performance of a supply chain observed as a multidimensional trajectory. However, for systems such as supply chains, it is rare for managers to limit themselves to the observation of three indicators. It is therefore imperative to find a way to make these results easy to handle and visualizable in a more than three-dimensional framework. Virtual reality is the solution being explored to immerse decision-makers in a virtual version of the performance framework, in which they can visualize and interact with trajectories and forces, opening the door to a new generation of performance dashboards.
