Multi-scale analysis of textural atomization in LOx-CH4 rocket engine subcritical flames
International audienceIn cryogenic liquid rocket engines, the propellants are usually injected into the combustion chamber by a coaxial injection system. During transient or low-thrust flight regimes, the injected propellants are in a subcritical state. The oxidizer is injected as a cylindrical liquid jet and the fuel is injected as a higher-velocity annular gaseous stream surrounding the liquid. Under such conditions, the primary atomization of the liquid oxidizer plays a major role in the combustion process. The primary atomization of the liquid oxidizer refers to the production of liquid fragments and droplets from ligaments at the liquid-gas interface. These ligaments, most likely a result of turbulent fluctuations in the liquid jet, are peeled from the interface in a process referred to as textural atomization. This article proposes a multi-scale description of the liquid ligaments responsible for the primary atomization process in a liquid oxygen/methane powered subscale rocket combustor. This description relies on recently developed image processing techniques to measure the local scale distribution of the liquid ligaments, as visualized in experimental backlighting images of the atomization process. Results report an evolution of the scale distribution of textural ligaments with the distance from the injector. Three operating conditions are compared. A global trend is observed, including positions where the textural atomization process is at its most intense and where it stops. A weak dependency on chamber pressure is reported, which is in line with the turbulent fluctuation-based ligament initiation scenario proposed in the literature. The reported measurements may lead to an estimation of local drop-diameter distributions. The reported observations provide valuable insights into the primary atomization process which can be used in the development of numerical models
International audienceThe development of load predictions capabilities and load control strategies is a key axis for enhancing the design process of the next aircraft generation, with the aim of significantly reducing fuel consumption levels. Within the Clean Sky 2 AIRFRAME ITD framework, a specific objective is dedicated to addressing the gust load case, which is crucial for strength design and fatigue loading source for transport type aircraft particularly in the certification process.Building on the accomplishments of the Clean Sky SFWA-ITD project, a new experimental research program has been established, centred around Wind Tunnel Tests (WTT) conducted at the transonic ONERA S3Ch facility. The primary goals of this program were to deepen our understanding of gust effects, particularly in the non-linear domain, and to advance the maturity of load control approaches. The initial phase of these studies has been conducted within the framework of a project called GUDGET, aimed at developing an innovative test rig for investigating gust loads, particularly challenging in the transonic regime. Based on pre-design solutions provided by ONERA, new gust generation devices have been analysed, designed and manufactured in order to deliver deterministic vertical and harmonic gusts with larger amplitude and in a wide frequency range. Two main concepts consisting in a tandem of airfoils installed horizontally right upstream of the test section were studied, based on either dynamically moving airfoils or fixed vanes equipped with pulsed blowing slots. To investigate the effects of gusts on the aerodynamic and aeroelastic behaviour of a model, the test rig also included a wall-mounted half-wing model. This model was heavily instrumented and equipped with a suitable aileron located close to the wingtip, which was remotely actuated using a high-frequency actuation system to demonstrate real-time active gust load alleviation. Finally, the results of a first WTT campaign, carried out to qualify the unsteady flow induced by the various gust generation capabilities, are presented. The outcomes of a second WTT dedicated to analysing gust effects on the model aeroelastic behaviour for different structural and aerodynamic conditions, are presented in a companion paper.
Numerical Exploration of S1MA Source Localization Improvements by Aeroacoustic Liners
International audienceONERA S1MA wind tunnel is used to characterize aeroacoustic sources, including the increasingly quieter future generations of engines. Therefore, it is necessary to both reduce the wind tunnel’s background noise and improve source detection methods (antenna techniques). This study focuses on the numerical evaluation of the latter point. The wind tunnel is represented numerically, and the linearized Euler equations are solved within it. Various positions of a high-speed liner in S1MA are tested, and their impact on source localization is assessed using Acoular. To simulate the waves interacting with the liner in the time domain, thus allowing broadband simulations, the aeroacoustic liner is represented as a homogenized impedance boundary condition, and a recent variation of the Time-Domain Impedance Boundary Condition (TDIBC) concept is employed. The results demonstrate the influence of the liner on the antenna results when placed in different locations relative to the source
International audienceThe hyperspectral component of bidirectional reflectance measurements, namely from several hundred wavelengths upwards, is attracting growing interest for numerous applications in both optics and computer graphics. In this paper, we present a motorized hyperspectral bidirectional reflectance measurement bench that performs in-plane and out-of-plane measurements for isotropic materials using a supercontinuum laser covering the visible and near infrared range, with a sub-nanometer spectral accuracy. We describe the complete data processing chain, including a method for assessing the alignment error of the measurement bench. From these measurements, we verify the principles of non-negativity, energy conservation and Helmholtz reciprocity. We introduce criteria also to evaluate the validity of the Lambertian hypothesis for the bidirectional reflectance and its deviation from reciprocity, obtained from the measurements directly. We show the need for spectral bidirectional reflectance measurements for certain materials, rejecting the separable function approximation.
A new H∞ observer for continuous LPV systems with unknown inputs using an HOSM differentiator
International audienceThe main contribution of this paper is the development of state and unknown input (UI) observers for noisy linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems. The observers are constructed in order to be unbiased (in particular the state estimation error is decoupled from the UI) and with a minimum transfer between the perturbations (that are assumed to be with finite energy) and the estimation errors. Contrary to equivalent observers developed in the literature, the present one relaxes a widely used rank condition on the system matrices for decoupling the UI. In order to do so, high-order derivation is needed, which is done using a high-order sliding modes differentiator. A method is given to design observer gains for LPV systems under polytopic form. Finally, three examples illustrate some aspects of the theoretical contributions, and compare this work to the existing ones
International audienceA multimodal method for computing the potential base flow and propagating acoustic perturbations inside axisymmetric ducts is presented. Instead of using the standard modal basis, a polynomial basis is used in the radial direction to reduce the computational cost of the method, but this introduces non-physical high-order modes. The impact of these modes on the stability of the calculation is examined, and for the acoustic computation, a modification of the axial integration is proposed to improve the conditioning of the matrices involved. The flow computation is achieved by applying the method (initially devoted to acoustics) at a zero frequency without convective effects, by modifying the definition of the admittance at the exit of the duct, and by performing an induction process on the density. The method is validated against a finite element method for ducts with hard walls or lined walls. The results show that the proposed multimodal method is very efficient in computing the mean flow and propagating the sound disturbances inside axisymmetric ducts.
International audiencePredictive numerical simulation of the afterburning phenomenon in fuel-rich rocket exhaust plumes is an essential tool for evaluating heat transfers to the body and vehicle signatures under various flight conditions, but remains a challenging problem for turbulence and combustion models. In this paper, the effects of a supersonic surrounding flow on the afterburning plume exhausting from an experimental non-aluminized solid propellant rocket motor are numerically investigated with the computational fluid dynamics code CEDRE. In the corresponding LP13 experiment, the motor is placed in the center of an annular channel generating a cold air co-flow at Mach 1.5 that mimics flight conditions. Simulations of both cases with and without this surrounding flow are performed using an axisymmetric Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes approach. The afterburning process between ambient air and burnt propellant gases is numerically handled by a kinetic scheme associated with a partially stirred reactor model and a local flame extinction model. The comparison with OH* chemiluminescence emission measurements shows that only the extinction model allows to capture a flame lift-off behavior which can have important implications for the numerical prediction of plume radiation and heat fluxes on the afterbody.

Durability Assessment of Bonded Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors for Aircraft Health Monitoring Applications
International audienceThis study conducted experimental and numerical investigations on piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWASs) bonded to an aluminum plate to assess the impact of bonding degradation on Lamb wave generation. Three surface-bonded PWASs were examined, including one intentionally bonded with a reduced adhesive to create a defective bond. Thermal cyclic aging was applied, monitoring through laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) and static capacitance measurements. The PWAS with the initially defective bond exhibited the poorest performance over aging cycles, emphasizing the significance of the initial bond condition. As debonding progressed, modifications in electromechanical behavior were observed, leading to a reduction in wave amplitude and distortion of the generated wave field, challenging the validity of existing analytical modeling of wave-tuning curves for perfectly bonded PWASs. Both numerical simulations and experimental observations substantiated this finding. In conclusion, this study highlights the imperative of a high-integrity bond for the proper functioning of a guided wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) system, emphasizing ongoing challenges in assessing SHM performance
International audienceThis paper presents a thorough comparison between RANS simulations performed with the computational fluid dynamics by ONERA, DLR, and Airbus (CODA) new-generation flow solver and reference legacy codes TAU (DLR) and elsA (ONERA) for high-speed cruising NASA Common Research Model (CRM) configurations that were considered in the context of the 5th, 6th, and 7th Drag Prediction Workshops. The solver’s accuracy is assessed with several meshing strategies, including block-structured, hybrid-structured/unstructured, and fully unstructured tetrahedral meshes. This solver features both a cell-centered finite-volume (FV) scheme suited to arbitrary meshes as well as a modern high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme. We show that for all cases considered, the FV component recovers an equivalent accuracy compared to elsA (cell-centered FV) on block-structured meshes and TAU (node-centered FV) on hybrid and unstructured meshes. The high-order DG scheme (third-order accurate) is found to significantly enhance the drag prediction on coarse meshes compared to legacy FV methods, both for structured and unstructured meshes.
