    No full text
This document deals with experimental work on two-phase combustion carried out in the Energetics Department of ONERA. The objective is to understand diphasic turbulent flames by means of coupled optical diagnostics, applied in so-called extreme conditions. Extreme refers to the conditions under which optical techniques are applied: in pressurized combustion chambers, with limited optical access and test durations. This manuscript is organized into 3 axes, around three types of combustion: cryogenic, aerobic and supersonic encountered respectively in rocket engines, aeronautical burners and ramjets. For each type of combustion, the main experimental combustion installations are described to illustrate the complexity of implementing optical diagnostics. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the key role of atomization on flame structure, pollutant emissions and instabilities in two-phase combustion, in academic and industrial configurations. Backlight imaging and particle size analysis systems are used to characterize the structure of the dense jet and the atomization of the liquid jet. PLIF and LII laser diagnostics are used to understand the flame structure and the formation of soot particles in swirling flames. Fast optical imaging and PLIF techniques are implemented to characterize the atomization of a liquid fuel jet in a high-temperature Mach 2 supersonic crossflow. Finally, the interest of phosphor thermometry is shown in a two-phase exchanger application.

    No full text
International audienceIn planning and scheduling, a Simple Temporal Network with Uncertainty (STNU) is a constraint-based model that can manage the durations of activities when some of them cannot be set by the plan execution manager. For single agents that uncertainty comes from the environment. In multi-agent systems, they may come from the other agents ; recently, the Multiple Interdependent STNU (MISTNU) model has been introduced to deal with such shared durations controlled by one agent but only observed by the others. Checking the controllability (i.e., temporal satisfiability) of a global MISTNU is equivalent to local checking by each agent. But a new so-called repair problem arised : when some plans are uncontrollable, can agents negotiate the bounds of the possible duration intervals to recover controllability ? Centralized SMT-based algorithms exist, but in this paper we propose a first totally distributed approach, focusing on the Weak Controllability property. Our method, inspired by Distributed Constraint Satisfaction Problems (DisCSP), models the inconsistent cycles in the network as inter-agent constraints and uses an adapted distributed backtracking method to repair them. This algorithm outperforms the initial centralized one, while several ways of improving it are discussed.

    No full text

Numerical study and semi-analytical model of rocket motor exhaust backflow in rarefied atmosphere

    No full text
International audienceThe prediction of backflow from multi-species high density rocket engine plume at high altitude, i.e., plume gases going upstream of the vehicle in rarefied atmospheric conditions remains a challenging numerical problem. Direct Simulation Monte Carlo computations are used to assess the sensitivity of backflow to plume and atmosphere inflow properties, and ultimately to derive a semi-analytical backflow model. It is found that backflow is independent of plume density in the thermal equilibrium limit at the nozzle exit plane, which allows for huge computational cost reductions in simulations to determine the backflow model parameters. The backflow behavior also appears to be dependent on two Knudsen numbers, representing the density effect in the far field atmosphere and in the compressed region in front of the vehicle. The ability of the model to estimate the backflow of specific species is finally demonstrated on a meter sized solid rocket case

Performance and diagnostic of guided wave PZT transducers under reusable launch vehicles thermal flight conditions

International audienceThis paper examines the impact of brief but intense thermal cycling on surface-bonded guided waves (GW) piezoelectric transducers (PZT). The effects on both electromechanical impedance (EMI) self-diagnostic measurements and Lamb wave emission and reception performance are investigated through experimental and numerical studies. EMI spectra are acquired in the 80–400 kHz range with both the real and imaginary parts being studied. GW pitch-catch measurements are conducted for two frequency ranges (15–25 kHz and 150–250 kHz) to investigate the two fundamental Lamb wave modes. Furthermore, laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) scans are performed to detect and localize transducer debondings. A finite element model of a surface bonded PZT is used to reproduce qualitatively both pitch-catch measurements and EMI spectrum in order to test the impact of different parameters and to support the interpretation of the test results. Two types of evolution with thermal cycling have been identified, each with distinct EMI and GW signatures. Firstly, the PZTs show a uniform 15%–20% reduction in GW sensing capabilities across the studied frequency range, with unchanged emission capabilities. This behavior is associated with irreversible effects of the thermal cycling on the constitutive properties of the PZT (mainly on the relative permittivity) and, to a lesser extent, to the evolution of the mechanical properties of the bonding layer. Secondly, a unique signature of partial PZT debondings is exhibited on the EMI spectra and LDV scans. The debonding has little impact on the GW signals at low frequency but results in amplitude changes and phase delays of both the received and emitted waveforms in the higher frequency range

For several decades, the number of objects in Earth's orbit has been steadily increasing, highlighting the need for tools tailored to space surveillance. These tools, essential for detecting and tracking satellites and other orbiting devices, also enable the characterization of their state, use, and composition. Among these sources of information, the optical signature of materials represents a valuable resource, provided it is correctly interpreted. Advances in image synthesis algorithms, combining optics and computer science, have opened new opportunities to simulate these signatures with a high degree of realism. These techniques rely on detailed modeling of object geometry, materials, light sources, and their environment. However, existing data or models of material reflectivity are often insufficient, especially when it comes to capturing angular and spectral variations. The scientific literature continues to face significant gaps in the availability of physically realistic hyperspectral bidirectional models. In this context, the work presented in this manuscript focuses on developing innovative approaches for measuring and modeling the hyperspectral bidirectional reflectivity of materials. The first step involved using a spectro-gonioreflectometer and developing a processing pipeline to perform precise measurements of material reflection properties across extensive angular and spectral domains. The proposed processing chain includes specific contributions for this type of setup, such as adaptive sampling of observation directions and a method for correcting alignment errors. Following these experimental measurements, new tools for critical analysis were introduced. Validation criteria, such as verifying Helmholtz reciprocity, were proposed, along with approaches to separate the spectral and angular contributions of the measured bidirectional spectral reflectivities. In the second phase, this work focused on modeling the measured bidirectional spectral reflectivities. Two complementary approaches were explored. The first, analytical, led to the proposal of a parametric model based on spherical Gaussians, designed to comply with physical constraints and faithfully represent the measured materials. The second approach involves interpolating experimental data using radial basis functions. A robust methodology was developed, integrating reciprocity constraints and leveraging a parameterization suited to the definition domain of bidirectional reflectivity functions. This technique provides a practical solution for reconstructing sparse data and integrating them into rendering engines for realistic simulations.

torchcvnn: A PyTorch-based library to easily experiment with state-of-the-art Complex-Valued Neural Networks

    No full text
    International audienceComplex-valued neural networks (CVNN) have attracted increasing attention in recent years, although their definition dates back to the mid-20th century. Indeed, several domains naturally process complex-valued signals, such as when sensing involves the response to an electromagnetic wave, such as remote sensing, MRI, etc. These domains would benefit from breakthroughs in complex-valued neural networks (CVNNs). We believe independent contributions to CVNNs must be gathered in a single, easy-to-use library. \texttt{torchcvnn} is an effort in that direction and provides several complex-valued building blocks, allowing us to experiment with CVNNs easily. The library is available at \url{https://github.com/torchcvnn/torchcvnn} alongside examples available at \url{https://github.com/torchcvnn/examples}

Unveiling Spin Selective Mechanism toward Very Large Spin Signals in Black Phosphorus 2D Semiconductor Spintronics Devices

    No full text
International audienceDiscovering an efficient spintronic semiconductor workhorse with dual host capabilities as a channel and spin valve barrier remains one of the most elusive endeavors toward the development of spin-logic circuits. Graphene paved the way for two-dimensional (2D) materials, yet engineering a controlled band gap in it remains a challenge. Black phosphorus (BP) was recently unveiled as a potential candidate in the realm of 2D semiconductors, with carrier mobilities among the largest reported for a 2D material and a low spin-orbit coupling reminiscent of graphene. Although promising spin transport properties have already been reported, their potential for tunneling and spin injection remains uncharted. Here, we unveil an unknown spin transport mechanism spin-split in k-space and report on corresponding high magnetoresistance spin signals up to 500% in BP based spin valves. Those findings are analyzed and discussed in light of a first-principles theoretical investigation showing BP's potential for spin filtering beyond its expected role of spin transport channel. This strongly supports BP's vision as an outstanding platform for spintronics, as it could become a versatile workhorse yet unavailable with any other semiconductor

    No full text
International audienceIn this paper, we propose a novel collocation-based Model Order Reduction (cMOR) strategy for solving parametric advection-diffusion PDEs on moving Chimera grids. Unlike traditional projection-based MOR, cMOR solves the High-Dimensional Model on a small subset of collocation points and extends the solution to the entire domain using a global reduced basis. By leveraging the ADER method on unsteady Chimera meshes, cMOR addresses the computational challenges posed by convection-dominated problems, particularly the Kolmogorov N-width barrier. Our results demonstrate the efficiency of cMOR in reducing the computational cost while maintaining accuracy.
