Characterization of mangrove mudflat sediment contamination by fecal bacteria and trace metals: A multivariate assessment in equatorial marine protected areas in Gabon, Western Central Africa
International audienceAmong the most productive ecosystems worldwide, mangroves contribute to global carbon sequestration and play a pivotal role for many species, including supporting the sustainable provision of intertropical fisheries resources. Despite the many essential ecosystem services they provide, mangrove ecosystems are facing increasing anthropogenic pressure, primarily because they develop in littoral areas where human activities are rapidly expanding, causing deforestation, urban extension and pollution. Mangroves cover over 1,700 km² of Gabon's coastline, stretching within protected zones or located alongside populated areas, raising concerns about the potential impact of pollution. This study assessed pollution levels in mangrove surface sediments from 24 stations in the capital city of Libreville and the two adjacent Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), Akanda and Pongara, where human impact has not been fully characterized. From 2021 to 2023, we measured chlorophyll a, fecal indicator bacteria (FIB: Escherichia coli and fecal streptococci) and six trace metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn). Our results show that while Pongara National Park remains relatively pristine, human influence has resulted in significant contamination of sediments by FIB and trace metals, with Cu, Pb and Zn being associated with boat traffic and fuel spills. Chlorophyll a at the surface of sediments, indicative of microphytobenthic biomass, reflect the eutrophication from urban discharge. Spatial differences in contamination patterns are significant between Libreville and Akanda, and between Akanda and Pongara parks (p < 0.05), but not significant between Libreville and Pongara National Park (p > 0.05), suggesting a possible rapid dispersion of urban pollution. Despite localized pollution, contamination levels remained generally low, suggesting that patterns are influenced more by the specific characteristics of each area than by MPA status. This study provides a first assessment of pollution pressure on mangrove tidal flats within protected areas in Gabon, emphasizing that the success of MPAs could be enhanced through contamination monitoring to achieve long-term conservation goals.</div
Regulations based on local realities
To ensure that management measures for marine areas and species are appropriate and properly applied, key stakeholders and local realities must be taken into account. New Caledonia's local authorities are experimenting with different approaches to tailor their environmental policies to the social and environmental challenges they are facing
The sound of silence
The world of the sea is not one of silence: sounds are abundant and enable oceanologists to identify the organisms that live there, to understand some of their behaviour and to give indications about the state of health of ecosystems
L'EMPÊCHEMENT TEMPORAIRE DU CHEF DE L'ÉTAT ET LA CONTINUITÉ DE LA FONCTION PRÉSIDENTIELLE : REGARD SUR UN ANGLE MORT DU CONSTITUTIONNALISME CAMEROUNAIS
International audienceThe normativity of constitutions in French-speaking black Africa is weakened by thesilences, contradictions and blind spots that make it difficult to apply an essential part of theconstitutional field. The text of the constitution of 18 January 1996 echoes this trend throughits extreme laconism in the framework of the temporary impediment of the president of therepublic, which clearly undermines the continuity of the state. In this respect, it is clear that theconstitutional arrangements for deputising for the Head of State expose him to incidents likelyto cause the presidential office to be discontinued as a result of the uncertainties, gaps andimprecisions that have led to it going astray. Such misuse necessarily calls for anaggiornamento, a constitutional rewrite, with a view to restoring temporary impediment to thechessboard of the fundamental norm as an adjunct to the continuity of the State and thepresidential function.
From oceanic to continental subduction and collision in the Western Alps: P-T-time evolution of the Briançonnais/Liguro-Piemont plate contact
International audienceUnderstanding the evolution of convergent plate boundaries and the mechanisms of strain accommodation through time and space is made possible by studying exhumed subduction complexes within orogenic belts. This study uses the internal zones of the Western Alps, one of the largest and best-preserved fossil subduction complexes in the world, to track the transition from subduction to collision. We herein combine in-situ Ar-Ar and Rb-Sr data on white micas with pressure-temperature estimates derived from pseudosection modeling and Raman thermometry on carbonaceous material, along eleven transects crossing the mountain belt. Results (i) confirm the preservation of similar peak pressure-temperature conditions on both sides of the Briançonnais/Liguro-Piemont contact (as proposed by Mendes et al., 2023), (ii) indicate that the Briançonnais cover units reached their metamorphic peak around 50 ± 5 Ma and likely correspond to the former cover of the Dora-Maira massif, (iii) document the progressive slicing of large basement units at the end of the subduction process and the evolution of deformation (from localized at interface-scale to distributed at crustal-scale), and (iv) allow refining the initial structure of the continental margin and its role during convergence. This study also highlights the merits and limitations of Ar-Ar and Rb-Sr radiochronological systems, and in particular the complexity of the record associated with multiple metamorphic recrystallizations. Although the variable and in places marginal extent of excess argon complicates the interpretation of Ar-Ar ages, this study shows that the Ar-Ar system is likely more robust than the Rb-Sr system for tracking recrystallization history. The latter system appears sensitive to late re-equilibration episodes, potentially linked to fluid circulation.Mendes, K., Agard, P., Plunder, A., Herviou, C., 2023.
