Background: Constitutional primary hemostasis disorders are rare conditions with variable clinical manifestations. Among them, Bernard-Soulier syndrome (BSS), Glanzmann's thrombasthenia (GT), and granule abnormalities are the most common. In La Réunion, BSS is overrepresented due to a founder effect. Often unrecognized in its heterozygous form, homozygous BSS is a major challenge, combining profound thrombocytopenia and severe bleeding as from birth. Its biological diagnosis is therefore essential : until now, flow cytometry (FCM) at the CHU Sud La Réunion hospital only allowed for qualitative analysis. The implementation of a more robust method, which is qualitative, quantitative, and functional, is essential.Method: Adaptation of platelet FCM developed at the Reims University Hospital, initially on DXFlex, to FACSLyric (BD) flow cytometers. Use of the PLT Gp/Receptors kit (BioCytex), supplemented by CD63 (dense granule marker). Creation of a chart of local normal values by including 51 volunteers. Results: After selection, 38 controls were selected to establish the chart. Validations (repeatability, reproducibility, absence of inter-operator bias) led to the drafting of Method validation documentation for scope B in compliance with ISO 15189 updated in 2022.Conclusio: Thanks to our study, in partnership with the CRC-MHC-OI, the flow cytometry results from the CHU Sud de La Réunion, together with other biological results from platelet studies, enable a significant improvement in the diagnosis of inherited platelet disorders, such as BSS, GT, and granule pathologies.

International audienceThe production of cocoa beans (4.9 million tons globally) generates at least ten times that amount in empty cocoa pods. These waste products, often used as natural fertilizer, are nevertheless rich in chemical compounds that are still largely underutilized. This study aims to develop innovative and biodegradable materials based on polylactic acid (PLA) and cocoa husks using twin-screw extrusion to create structural elements that are durable, high-performing, and environmentally friendly. Furthermore, these materials will be combined to design earth bricks with improved characteristics, particularly in terms of mechanical strength, durability, and thermal and acoustic properties. Physical and mechanical characterization tests will therefore be carried out to evaluate the behavior of these new materials under different stresses. Ultimately, this research aims to valorize agricultural by-products, promote a local circular economy, reduce construction costs, while contributing to environmental protection and improved thermal comfort in buildings.
International audienceThe production of cocoa beans (4.9 million tons globally) generates at least ten times that amount in empty cocoa pods. This waste can be used by farmers as natural fertilizer, but it is also rich in chemical compounds that are currently underutilized. This study will therefore focus on the development of innovative materials based on lignocellulosic adhesive/binder and cocoa pods, two materials derived from abundant natural resources. Innovation in the use of these materials could make it possible to create structural elements that are durable, high-performing, and environmentally friendly. We will explore the use of lignocellulosic adhesive, a binder derived from plant materials, as well as cocoa pods, a byproduct of cocoa cultivation widely available in Cameroon and several other countries. These materials will be combined to design structural elements (beams, columns, etc.) as well as earth bricks with improved characteristics, particularly in terms of mechanical strength, durability, and thermal and acoustic properties. Furthermore, the new environmental regulation RE 2020 is based on limiting energy consumption and contributing to the greenhouse effect (emissions of carbon, methane, and nitrogen dioxide linked to the combustion of fossil fuels). These requirements are leading to a change in design approaches regarding the use of bio-based materials in the construction sector. The main objective of this research is therefore to valorize agricultural waste, particularly cocoa pods, by using them in construction, which could reduce waste, lower the costs of local construction, promote environmental protection, and improve thermal comfort. Physical and mechanical characterization tests will be carried out to evaluate the behavior of these new materials under different stresses.
Introduction: The rapid ageing of the population on Réunion Island has led to a growing incidence of acute confusional syndromes in geriatric practice. These multifactorial conditions are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Electroencephalography (EEG), although underused, can reveal abnormalities suggestive of encephalopathy, particularly drug- or antibiotic-induced. This study aimed to evaluate the role of EEG in diagnosing antibiotic-associated toxic encephalopathies and its therapeutic impact in the Geriatric Post-Emergency Unit (UPUG) at Réunion University Hospital.Method: We conducted a retrospective, observational, descriptive study in the UPUG between January and December 2024. Patients aged ≥75 years who underwent EEG for acute confusional syndrome were included. Clinical, therapeutic and electrophysiological data were extracted from medical records. The primary outcome was the identification of toxic encephalopathy by EEG. Secondary outcomes included diagnostic relevance of EEG, proportion of encephalopathies, number of non-contributive EEGs, associated factors, and therapeutic impact. Results: Among 88 patients (median age 83 years, mean ADL 3.8/6), 81.8% had abnormal EEGs. Diffuse slowing (71.6%) and triphasic waves (26.1%) were the most frequent patterns. Toxic encephalopathy was identified in 9.1% of cases, mainly linked to ceftriaxone ± metronidazole. EEG findings prompted therapeutic adjustments in 21.6% of cases (antibiotic discontinuation or modification, antiepileptic initiation). Clinical recovery occurred in 45.5% of patients, while in-hospital mortality was 15.9%.Conclusion: EEG proves to be a valuable diagnostic and decision-making tool in elderly patients with acute confusion. Its targeted use in prolonged, atypical or drug-related cases refines diagnosis and guides’ therapy.

Effect of harvest time on the properties of Triumfetta cordifolia bast fibres
International audienceIncreasing the flame retardancy of lignocellulosic materials such as Miscanthus × giganteus can effectively enable their wide use. This study examines the fireproofing process of Miscanthus particles using an eco-friendly process by grafting phytic acid and urea in aqueous solution. Miscanthus particles underwent a steam explosion step before being grafted. Fireproof binderless particle panels were manufactured from miscanthus particles with or without adding olive pomace by hot-pressing. The effect of the steam explosion and/or the flame-retardant treatment on the morphology, chemical composition and thermal stability of the particles, as well as the thermal stability of the panels, was investigated. The results showed that water impregnation followed by a steam explosion at 210 °C for 8 min resulted in particles that were rich in lignin and more homogeneous in size (length and width). Fireproof particles were produced with relatively low P and N contents. The flame retardancy of the binderless particle panels was significantly improved when using miscanthus particles treated with phytic acid and urea, as shown by a reduced heat release (HRR) and an increased time-to-ignition. However, the presence of olive pomace significantly decreased the flame retardancy of the panels. Binderless particle panels prepared from grafted miscanthus particles showed the best fire properties and are considered fireproof
Marine animal forest formed by gorgonians Subergorgia on near‐shore mesophotic ecosystems in Reunion Island
International audienceMesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs), occurring between 30 and 150 m depth, are increasingly recognized for their ecological importance, yet they remain underexplored, particularly in the southwestern Indian Ocean. During benthic surveys conducted at depths ranging from 15 to 75 m off northwestern Reunion Island, we documented a dense and extensive marine animal forest (MAF) dominated by large arborescent octocorals Subergorgia cf. suberosa . This monospecific community formed a complex three‐dimensional habitat spanning a substantial area at mesophotic depths over the northwestern abrupt slopes of Reunion Island. Colonies reached over 1.5 m in height, providing structural habitat for diverse fish and macroinvertebrate assemblages. A total of 53 fish species from 22 families were recorded in association with this MAF, alongside numerous epibionts and understory anthozoans. Despite its ecological value, this habitat faces significant anthropogenic pressures, particularly from fishing activities. Nearly 25% of photographed S . cf. suberosa colonies were entangled in fishing lines, with visible damage including tissue necrosis and polyp loss affecting up to 47% of colonies. These impacts, along with sedimentation from runoff, raise concerns for the long‐term persistence of this mesophotic habitat‐forming community, as long‐lived, slow‐growing organisms like gorgonians may be more impacted by these types of disturbances and take longer to recover than fast‐growing organisms. Our findings represent the first quantitative assessment of Subergorgia dominance and associated biodiversity in this region and highlight its role as a potential refuge for shallow reef taxa. The ecological significance, spatial extent, and fragility of this MAF underscore the urgent need for spatially replicated surveys, targeted conservation strategies, and regulation of damaging activities such as fishing. We advocate for increased research efforts focused on mesophotic habitats, with particular attention to the population dynamics and ecological functions of large gorgonians, to better understand the role of MCEs in reef resilience under accelerating environmental changes
Escherichia coli α-hemolysin induces red blood cell retention in a microfluidic spleen-like device
International audienceα-hemolysin (HlyA) is a major exotoxin secreted by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), known for its ability to lyse red blood cells (RBCs). Although its lytic effects are well characterized, the nonlytic alterations on RBCs, such as increased permeability to Ca2+, osmotic imbalance, and morphological alterations, remain less understood and may be critical in UPEC pathogenesis. This study investigates the impact of these nonlytic alterations on the rheology and mechanics of RBCs using two biomimetic microfluidic devices that model key aspects of RBCs' circulation. In the first device, which mimics the mechanical deformation of RBCs in narrow capillaries, HlyA sublytic concentrations were found to significantly impair RBC deformability. These changes were accompanied by an increase in cytosolic Ca2+ and volume expansion. In contrast, the nonacylated protoxin ProHlyA neither impaired the deformability of RBCs nor triggered changes in cytosolic Ca2+ or cell volume. The second device, which simulates the RBCs' filtration by the spleen's red pulp, revealed that HlyA, but not ProHlyA, increased RBCs' retention in small gaps resembling splenic fenestrations. The extent of RBCs' retention was partially mitigated by blocking purinergic signaling, indicating a contribution of the HlyA-induced volume increase in this process. Our results suggest that the increase in cytosolic Ca2+ elicited by HlyA impacts RBCs' circulation by decreasing RBCs' deformability and increasing spleen retention. However, this impairment of RBCs' performance can function as a defense mechanism to aid in the retention of HlyA-bound RBCs, removing them from circulation, and potentially preventing vascular hemolysis
