Managed forests support higher carbon density and sequestration in the Congo basin
Land-use drives forest loss and carbon emissions in the Congo basin, undermining its role in climate change mitigation. Here, we assess how aboveground live carbon (AGC) stocks and fluxes vary across land-use in the Congo basin rainforests by developing AGC density map for the year 2020 and integrating it with high-resolution forest cover loss data over 30 years (1990–2020) to estimate carbon emissions and removals. Our findings reveal higher forest integrity under managed disturbances, with logged forests having 7.53% (range: 4.86%–9.5%) less AGC compared to old growth, unlike 50% differences observed with slash-and-burn and other unmanaged disturbances. Unmanaged areas hold 50% of the AGC storage, implying that much of the basin remains highly vulnerable to rapid carbon loss from unmanaged land-use. Overall, the basin remained a net AGC sink of -37.5 ± 4.29 Tg C yr − 1 , dominated my 98% removals from managed and intact forests within logging concessions (21.3 ± 2.39 Tg C yr − 1 ) and protected areas (15.73 ± 2.24 Tg C yr − 1 ), while unmanaged forests nearly remained carbon neutral. These findings underscore the critical need to integrate sustainable management strategies for unmanaged forests into climate mitigation frameworks such as REDD + to enhance carbon retention in the Congo basin

Although Machine Learning (ML) models have proved to be useful in key applications, they still have significant limitations, such as sensitivity to distribution shifts. Therefore, it is essential to provide trustworthy monitoring methods when ML models make predictions on new unlabeled data. For an ML model, predictive uncertainty is defined as the uncertainty of predictions, which can be caused by the data or the model. As they identify insufficient knowledge, uncertainty estimates can thus be employed to monitor ML models' predictions and make decision-making safer and more reliable in applications such as financial risk assessment or medical diagnosis. In this thesis, we investigate the problem of estimating and explaining predictive uncertainty in ML. We introduce various methods to improve the quantification and explanation of predictive uncertainty in classification or regression tasks and through different settings such as multimodality or distribution shifts. In particular, we introduce a method to produce adaptive prediction intervals in regression tasks. To address classification tasks under distribution shifts, we first propose a method to quantify and visualize predictive uncertainty with simple representations. We then extend the research to a multimodal Transformer which quantifies uncertainty by design. Also, this architecture makes it possible to explain predictive uncertainty in terms of feature values. As uncertainty quantification is closely related to unsupervised performance estimation, we then introduce a method for practitioners to assess the model's performance in out-of-distribution contexts. Lastly and as a first step toward trustworthy ML, we introduce a risk-based approach and a reporting tool which aim to produce safe machine learning lifecycles.
Background: The Matras Law represented a major evolution in French prehospital medicine by authorizing fire and rescue service personnel (sapeurs-pompiers), following specialized training, to perform certain therapeutic Emergency Care Procedures. While these measures aim to improve care accessibility and speed, their implementation is recent and sparsely evaluated. Method: A retrospective, single-center analysis was conducted using the medical dispatch records of ECPs administered by BMPM rescuers during the period from November 8, 2023, to February 28, 2025. The primary endpoint was the appropriateness/compliance of the therapeutic agent’s administration relative to its indication. Secondary endpoints included: evidence of medical authorization (prescription), associated dispatch of a Mobile Intensive Care Unit (SMUR), and adverse events reported by the rescuers. Results: A total of 667 records were reviewed, predominantly concerning Methoxyflurane analgesia (N = 442), followed by adult Salbutamol aerosols (N = 156), Epinephrine (N = 33); pediatric Salbutamol aerosols (N = 24), and Intranasal Naloxone (N = 12). Among the ECPs performed during the period of interest, only 7.3 % (N = 49) did not formally comply with recommended indications, primarily due to a lack of detail in the medical regulation record. Furthermore, no adverse events were reported. Conclusion: Therapeutic ECPs are already widely utilized in Marseille and appear to have a reassuring safety profile, encouraging their development across the rest of the national territory.
THE PLASTISPHERE OF PLASTIC POLLUTION IN NEW CALEDONIA: A CARRIER FOR METAL- AND ANTIBIOTIC-RESISTANT CORAL REEF PATHOGENS
International audiencePlastics threaten marine ecosystems, yet their impact on New Caledonia's reefs (South Pacific) remains understudied. The plastisphere may harbor harmful bacteria, including coral pathogens like Vibrio spp., and contribute to antibiotic and metal resistance, jeopardizing coral health. Macroplastics were collected from two coastal sites in New Caledonia along an 800 m by 30 m transect. Plastics were identified using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, biofilms analyzed via scanning electron microscopy, and metal content quantified by ICP-EOS. Bacteria from the biofilm were isolated and identified using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and 16S rDNA sequencing. We also tested Vibrio isolates for antibiotic and metal resistance. We quantified a mean rate of 760 plastics/ km2 of which predominant polymers were polyethylene terephthalate (23%), polypropylene (21%), polyethylene (15%), and Polyvinyl chloride (15%). Biofilms hosted bacteria, diatoms, and cyanobacteria, with cultivable flora ranges from 3.104 to 1.106 CFU.ml-1. Vibrio spp. accounted up to to 6.104 CFU.ml-1. The coral pathogen, V. alginolyticus averaged 1.9 104 CFU.ml-1. Moreover, biofilms contained heavy metals, with nickel and cobalt, up to 25 μmol/g 20 μmol/g, respectively. Vibrio spp. isolates exhibited resistance to a metal mixture (50 ppm nickel,10 ppm cobalt, 5 ppm chromium, 100 ppm manganese) and four antibiotics (Ceftazidime (10 μg), la Piperacilline-tazobactam (30-6 μg), Ciprofloxacine (5 μg), Tetracycline (30 μ)). This study confirms that plastics act as reservoirs for harmful bacteria, facilitating their persistence and possibly their spread. As carriers of resistant pathogens, they pose a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Reducing plastic pollution is critical for coral reef conservatio
Flexibility or uncertainty? A critical assessment of AlphaFold 2 pLDDT
International audienceRelease of AlphaFold 2 and subsequent development of AlphaFold 3 had a profound impact on protein structure prediction, providing near-experimental accuracy. However, the utility of AF2’s confidence index (pLDDT) as indicators of protein flexibility remains underexplored and debated. In this large-scale study, we evaluate AF2’s pLDDT as a predictor of protein flexibility by comparing it with flexibility metrics derived from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations from the ATLAS dataset, NMR ensembles, and experimental B-factors. We also assess the efficiency of ESMFold pLDDT and AlphaFold 3 in this context. Our findings reveal that AF2 pLDDT reasonably correlates with MD and NMR-derived flexibility metrics, but fails to capture flexibility in the presence of interacting partners, and therefore need to be cautiously interpreted. Furthermore, AF2 pLDDT appears more relevant than B-factor values for evaluation of protein flexibility. While AF3 shows slight improvements in capturing protein dynamics, MD simulations remain superior for comprehensive flexibility assessment
Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is playing an increasingly important role in primary care. However, it is still rarely included in the university curriculum of future French general practitioners. In 2022, a POCUS training program was implemented for general practice residents in the Indian ocean subdivision, following prior training of their supervising general practitioners. The primary objective of this study was to assess the students' perceptions after participating in this pilot training.Method: We conducted a cross-sectional observational study among the residents who participated in the ultrasound training. Data were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed descriptively. Results: 90% had already performed ultrasound during their internship, but only 35% had already received formal training. Of the residents with access to an ultrasound device at their internship site, 82.4% felt that the training facilitated its use. After completing the course, 80.9% of the participants reported improved diagnostic accuracy, 72.8% felt more confident in ruling out emergency conditions, and 68.2% felt better able to guide patient management. All respondents were satisfied with the training, describing it as relevant and well-adapted to general practice. Conclusion: This pilot training program addresses an explicit need among general practice residents by providing a shared foundation in clinical ultrasound. This study allowed for its improvement. The next step is to ensure its sustainability by integrating it into the national general practice curriculum, and promoting access to adequately equipped and trained internship sites.
Integrated microfiltration and ultra-clean packaging for high-quality fruit beverages in rural agro-industries
Source Agritrop Cirad (https://agritrop.cirad.fr/616565/) * Autres projets (id;sigle;titre): ;;(COL) Generación Local De Valor Agregado Para Los Productos De Palmáceas Tradicionales: Açaí (Euterpe Precatoria) Y Coco (Coco Nucifera) En La Amazonia Y La Costa Pacífica//International audienceBeyond fruit availability in rural areas, valorization into ready-to-drink beverages is limited because conventional pasteurization preserves sensory quality only with energy- and capital-intensive setups that small-scale agro-industries cannot feasibly deploy. This study designed and validated an integrated crossflow microfiltration (CFM) line tailored to rural contexts for producing high-quality beverages. The system couples crossflow microfiltration with optional in-line pasteurization of the retentate and ultra-clean bag-in-box packaging; its effects on microbial safety, composition, and process performance were evaluated across several fruit beverages. Microbial challenge tests showed >7-log reductions in aerobic mesophiles, coliforms, lactic acid bacteria, and yeasts/molds, confirming effective cold sterilization via the integrated line. Shelf life reached up to 3 months for coconut water and 5 months for blackberry juice. Hydrophilic compounds (e.g., sugars, vitamin c, anthocyanins) largely passed into the permeate, while hydrophobic compounds (e.g., carotenoids, terpenes) concentrated in the retentate; re-adding pasteurized retentate restored color and aroma. Specific energy use fell by 50–80 % versus HTST equivalent treatment, depending on processed volume and CIP cycle frequency. Overall, the validated integrated line offers a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and scalable alternative for high-quality fruit beverages, supporting sustainable rural agro-industrial development
