Into the Jungle of Biological Agents of Foodborne Diseases: Time to Put Some Order for the French Risk Manager

    No full text
International audienceConsumers can be exposed to many foodborne biological hazards that cause diseases with varying outcomes and incidence and, therefore, represent different levels of public health burden. To help the French risk managers to rank these hazards and to prioritize food safety actions, we have developed a three-step approach. The first step was to develop a list of foodborne hazards of health concern in mainland France. From an initial list of 335 human pathogenic biological agents, the final list of "retained hazards" consists of 24 hazards, including 12 bacteria (including bacterial toxins and metabolites), 3 viruses and 9 parasites. The second step was to collect data to estimate the disease burden (incidence, Disability Adjusted Life Years) associated with these hazards through food during two time periods: 2008-2013 and 2014-2019. The ranks of the different hazards changed slightly according to the considered period. The third step was the ranking of hazards according to a multicriteria decision support model using the ELECTRE III method. Three ranking criteria were used, where two reflect the severity of the effects (Years of life lost and Years lost due to disability) and one reflects the likelihood (incidence) of the disease. The multicriteria decision analysis approach takes into account the preferences of the risk managers through different sets of weights and the uncertainties associated with the data. The method and the data collected allowed to estimate the health burden of foodborne biological hazards in mainland France and to define a prioritization list for the health authorities

Citation suggérée : Anses. (2024).

Application of slow-controlled release fertilizer coordinates the carbon flow in carbon-nitrogen metabolism to effect rice quality

International audienceAbstract Slow-controlled release fertilizers are experiencing a popularity in rice cultivation due to their effectiveness in yield and quality with low environmental costs. However, the underlying mechanism by which these fertilizers regulate grain quality remains inadequately understood. This study investigated the effects of five fertilizer management practices on rice yield and quality in a two-year field experiment: CK, conventional fertilization, and four applications of slow-controlled release fertilizer (UF, urea formaldehyde; SCU, sulfur-coated urea; PCU, polymer-coated urea; BBF, controlled-release bulk blending fertilizer). In 2020 and 2021, the yields of UF and SCU groups showed significant decreases when compared to conventional fertilization, accompanied by a decline in nutritional quality. Additionally, PCU group exhibited poorer cooking and eating qualities. However, BBF group achieved increases in both yield (10.8 t hm −2 and 11.0 t hm −2 ) and grain quality reaching the level of CK group. The adequate nitrogen supply in PCU group during the grain-filling stage led to a greater capacity for the accumulation of proteins and amino acids in the PCU group compared to starch accumulation. Intriguingly, BBF group showed better carbon–nitrogen metabolism than that of PCU group. The optimal nitrogen supply present in BBF group suitable boosted the synthesis of amino acids involved in the glycolysis/ tricarboxylic acid cycle, thereby effectively coordinating carbon–nitrogen metabolism. The application of the new slow-controlled release fertilizer, BBF, is advantageous in regulating the carbon flow in the carbon–nitrogen metabolism to enhance rice quality

    No full text

Variation in the detectability of predator-prey interactions may lead to misleading conclusions in trophic ecology studies

    No full text
Molecular gut content analysis has revolutionised trophic ecology and provided precious insights for biological control. It allowed for the determination of the diet of many organisms and the identi cation of predators of speci c pests in natural conditions. However, DNA detectability depends on many parameters, notably on digestion rates that vary according to the predator-prey pair considered and the amount of prey consumed. When not considered, these factors may lead to an underestimation of the frequency of certain interactions compared with those for which the detection time window is wide, and to distortions in the conclusions of ecological studies. Here we study to which extent the identity of the prey and the predator affects the detection half-life of their interaction when using a diagnostic multiplex PCR. We focused on an omnivorous family of arthropods, carabid beetles, regarded as major natural enemies in many agroecosystems. To this purpose, the effects of digestion time, predator size, and voracity on DNA detectability were assessed for ve common prey types. Based on this study, a correction factor was generated for each species of predator and type of prey. Finally, predation intensity indexes of carabid communities on the ve prey types were calculated with and without the correction factor on a dataset containing observations from conventional and conservation winter wheat elds to illustrate the extent to which the inclusion of a digestion-based correction factor may alter the study's conclusions.Key Messages for many trophic interactions, the digestion process and its impact on DNA detection are unknown Size and voracity of the predator and prey identity impact digestion rates Assessment of predation intensity on agricultural pests is modi ed when considering digestion rate

Consumer-driven characterization of healing foods using Q methodology and Q based sorting

    No full text
International audienceWith the global surge in interest in healing following the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a growing interest in the concept of healing within the context of food. However, a clear understanding of how consumers perceive and define healing food is lacking. This study aimed to investigate consumer perceptions of healing food and the underlying elements that constitute the concept. Eighty subjects, evenly distributed across genders and age groups (19 to 65), conducted Q sort of 35 statements related to healing foods. Additionally, they sorted 46 food items into categories according to whether they considered them healing foods. The subjects were categorized based on their perceptions of healing foods. Group 1 emphasized physical health benefits of healing foods, identifying dairy, nuts, and functional beverages as healing foods. Group 2 valued the emotional benefits, choosing foods for sensory pleasure to alleviate negative emotions. Group 3 prioritized seasonal ingredients and eco-friendly preparation methods, with an older average age compared to the other groups. The results revealed a multidimensional nature of healing food, encompassing both physical and mental aspects. Interestingly, different consumer groups placed emphasis on distinct facets of healing foods and selected different items as representative of such foods. These findings highlight the nuanced nature of the healing concept and provide a valuable insight for deeper investigations into strategies for understanding and promoting healing foods
