The technical and economic effects of biodiversity standards on wheat production
International audienceOur paper assesses the technical and economic effects of adopting environmental standards aimed at favouring biodiversity on wheat production. We consider two standards with different levels of environmental stringency. We use data on French wheat production at the plot level from the period 2014-2020. We implement an endogenous switching regression model taking into account two sources of endogeneity, environmental standards adoption and inputs quantity use. Our results indicate that adopting the more stringent standard slightly decreases wheat yield and quality. In contrast, it induces a low increase in wheat price. The price premium of the more stringent environmental standard merely compensates for the negative effect of the standard's adoption on quality
International audienceIn a context of increased sharing of maritime space, the spatialisation offishing activity is an important scientific and planning issue, especially for the activity ofsmall vessels that are not equipped with a satellite tracking system. The scientific interestgroup VALPENA (eVALuation des Pratiques de PÊches au regard des Nouvelles Activités)was created in 2014 to oversee the development of a generic method based on probabilisticsurveys, making it possible to study and map fishing zones. A sea area is said to be a"fishing zone" if it is exploited by a vessel. Fishing zones cannot therefore be sampleddirectly, and VALPENA relies on indirect sampling using the population of fishing vessels. This indirect sampling poses a problem for the production of maps, as no information isobtained for a fishing area that is not indirectly observed. Since the use of annual censusesto minimise this problem is too costly and too restrictive for fishermen, VALPENA isinterested in developing a suitable stratified indirect sampling design that will overcomethe risks associated with over-surveying fishermen and minimise the fishing areas thatare not observed. The sampling design currently adopted is a stratified simple randomplan with proportional allocation. Different stratifications have been tested based on theinformation available and the expertise of the fisheries committees, but the results donot show any significant differences in terms of the fishing grounds observed. Simulations, the results of which will be presented at the conference, have been carried out to test astratification based on the fishing grounds visited by the vessels.
Decreased lactose percentage in milk associated with quarter health disorder and hyperketolactia, a proxy for negative energy balance, in dairy cows
International audienceSeveral studies have described variations in lactose content (LC) in dairy cows during udder quarter health disorder or negative energy balance (NEB). However, their joint effects on LC have never been described. This was the aim of a longitudinal observational study performed on 5 Quebec dairy farms using automatic milking systems. Quarter milk samples were collected every 14 d from 5 to 300 DIM. Quarter health status was described by combining SCC level (SCC- or SCC+: < or ≥100,000 cells/mL) and infectious status (Patho- or Patho+: presence or absence of pathogens on a milk culture). Cows with NEB in early lactation (DIM <70) were identified using milk β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) content: 0.15 mM = BHB-; 0.15 - 0.19 mM = BHB+; > 0.19 mM = BHB++. A total of 14,505 quarter cisternal milk samples were collected from 380 lactating cows. The quarter LC was analyzed using a mixed linear regression model with the following fixed effects: quarter health status, parity, time interval between last milking and sampling, quarter milk yield (in kg/d), DIM, and herd. A random quarter intercept with a repeated measures correlation structure and a cow random intercept were also specified. The LC of SCC+ quarters was lower (-0.17 ± 0.013% pts) compared with LC of SCC- quarters for both primiparous and multiparous cows. Over the 162 bacterial species identified, only 8 species had a prevalence greater than 4.0%, and just 5 of them were associated with a reduction in LC: Staphylococcus aureus, Staph. chromogenes, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Staph. epidermidis, and Staph. simulans. Cows identified as BHB+ and BHB++ in early lactation had a lower LC (-0.05 ± 0.019% and -0.13 ± 0.020% pts, respectively) compared with BHB- cows. For BHB++ cows, in both parity groups the decrease in LC (-0.20 ± 0.025% pts) was higher in SCC+ quarters compared with SCC- quarters. Moreover, the additive effect of the quarter health status and NEB on milk LC was greater with larger increases in BHB. Our findings highlight the necessity to jointly take into consideration both quarter health status and milk BHB concentration when using LC as a biomarker for NEB
Performance, egg quality, and composition in isa brown laying hens fed with different levels of desmodium tortuosum leaf flour
International audienceThe objective of this study was to investigate the effects on laying performance, egg quality traits, color, and composition of supplementing a white corn-based diet with Desmodium tortuosum leaf flour. Three hundred 32-week-old hens were distributed to 30 pens of 10 hens each and allocated to six dietary treatments (five replicates per treatment) for 13 weeks. Two control groups of 50 hens received one of either diet Y, based on yellow corn, or diet W, based on white corn. The other groups received a diet based on white corn supplemented with Desmodium tortuosum leaf flour at 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, or 10% (diet D). Diet D improved laying performance and yolk color at a reduced feed cost per egg but had no effect on cholesterol content. In conclusion, the inclusion of Desmodium tortuosum leaf flour, in a white corn-based diet, is effective in lowering feed cost, increasing egg production, and improving yolk color
Comparison of SMAL and hSMAL Parametric Reconstruction of Horse Based on Point Cloud
International audienceWith the increasing demand for animal breeding and the development of 3D reconstruction technology, an accurate and efficient 3D reconstruction method for horses is urgently needed. The aim of this paper is to investigate a parametric model-based 3D reconstruction method for horses. First, the 2D keypoints is detected using DeepLabCutand mapped to 3D keypoints based on camera parameters. The point cloud is then coarsely aligned with the model by minimizing the square error between the key points. Then, the 3D reconstruction of horses is transformed into a loss function minimization problem. The SMAL and hSMAL model parameters are gradually fitted to the point cloud data by iteratively optimising the shape, pose and translation parameters under the constraints of pose, keypoints and correspondence points to obtain the most appropriate mesh. The experimental results show that the hSMAL model can better fit the data in terms of posture and leg details than the SMAL model. In addition, the method shows greater robustness and adaptability in the face of missing data and noise interference in traditional reconstruction techniques. The results of the study provide an important technical support and data base for the automatic measurement of horse body size parameters
Nitrogenous fraction in Human Milk vs. Infant Formula: composition, structure and nutritional requirement
International audienceHuman Milk (HM) is a complex and evolutive fluid, specially dedicated to cover the infant nutritional requirement to ensure its optimal growth and development. While lipids and lactose are the most energetic nutrients, proteins convey a low proportion of energy (6%) and is present in low content (0.8-1.2 g/ 100mL), unlike that in bovine milk (3.2-3.4 g/100mL). Nevertheless, proteins are important nutrients providing, after digestion and absorption, indispensable amino acids (AAs) required for synthesis of body proteins or of other nitrogenous compounds (e.g. vitamin B3, serotonin, melatonin). The AA profile of mature HM (FAO,2013) is currently the best estimate of AA requirement of the human infant. However, this reference profile is based on a limited number of studies and is not corrected for the unabsorbed fraction. Beyond this nitrogenous fraction, HM contains a much higher fraction of non-protein nitrogen, usually estimated at 20-25% of the total nitrogen, than bovine milk and thus than cowmilk-based infant formula (5-10%). While HM remains the recommended food for infant, only 48% of worldwide infants under six months of age are exclusively breastfed (UNICEF, 2022). The most adequate substitute to HM is infant formula (IF), although different health effects are still expected. While the lipid fraction has been deeply investigated and optimized in IF, the interest towards the protein fraction is more recent. The present talk will give a comparison of the different nitrogenous fraction (composition and structure) between HM and IF. The bioavailable AA profile of mature HM determined from recent studies will be compared with the actual FAO reference value. In regards to this profile, the nutritional quality of IF protein will be discussed. Finally, the functionality of a specific AA that is tryptophan in metabolic pathways other than protein synthesis will be presented based on our recent work
Estuarine ecosystems are home to a fauna characterized by relatively limited biodiversity compared to the marine realm, but that is adapted to the variations of the ambient conditions. The network of interactions in place within estuaries yields various ecological functions. Specific conditions, e.g. those found over intertidal mudflats, promote the incorporation of energy and its transfer through the trophic network. Estuaries generally serve as nurseries for the juveniles of various fish populations. Juvenile fish utilize the high secondary production to feed and grow during their first few years. The trophic carrying capacity of a nursery ground amounts to the quantity of juvenile fish that can exploit the food supply to meet their nutritional needs. This capacity can become longwordlimiting, stunting growth and inducing mortalities. Studying the biodiversity and the trophic carrying capacity of the Loire estuarine nursery allowed for the investigation of the evolution in structural and functional aspects of this ecosystem. Focusing on ichthyological and macrobenthic communities, changes have notably been identified in the composition of species assemblages due to processes of marinisation and poleward shifts. In parallel, the nursery function has likely been altered due to habitat compression from the reclamation of estuarine aquatic surfaces over decades. These findings are quite common among the estuarine ecosystems of Western Europe and suggest that the nursery function might be modified in the current context of global change.
